My daughter (3 weeks old) is breastfed and she is getting increasingly fussy and spitting up "cottage cheese" looking milk...lol...sorry for the yummy details! I am just wondering if she may be lactose intolerant...I drink tons of milk and have my fair share of cheese and ice cream. Anyone else have experience with this while nursing? Otherwise, I am wondering if she may have acid reflux?

Daniel was exclusively fed breast milk fortified with formula (due to heart defect...I pumped and bottle fed).

Around 4 months of age, he started having blood in his poop. After a trip to a GI specialist, they determined he was either having a reaction to something I was eating...or had a milk allergy. So we immediately stopped breastmilk and switch to hypoallergenic formula (Enfamil Nutramigen). The blood in poop cleared up immediately. That was back in October. He has been fine ever since. The ped also put him on Zantac just in case he had reflux. He was never fussy and never spits up....but my ped says everyone reacts differently to allergies. For Daniel, it was blood in poop. Now she did tell me that just because he has a sensitivity now....he won't neccessarily grow up to be lactose intolerant. I can be something that they can outgrow.

I was always under the impression that a baby couldn't be allergic to breastmilk.....but Daniel was.

Hope this helps.

She eats about every 3 hours, on average. She isn't spitting up huge amounts, but it is more than I would consider typical, if there is such a thing. Her fussiness is such that it seems she often has a belly ache.

I would tell the PEDI....my sonwasn't BFed because he never would do it, but when I switched him from formula to milk he now spits up JUST what you say your little sweetie does, and he said it's a developed milk allery BUT at his age wasn't too concerned but at her age they might be.Just call them...it may be that you have to cut some dairy out of your diet...I don't know Sorry I wasn't more help...Oh I think my Pedi told us that average or OK spit up is no more than 3 times a day and as long as it doesn't look chunky or partially digested! SO that may help!-Courtney

Is "cottage cheese" looking spit up chunky or partially digested? To me, when it smells like vomit, it has been digested...not sure if that is true....and hers looks like cottage cheese...small, runny cottage cheese. lol

You could just cut out all dairy for a week and see what happens. I eat lots of dairy and when Eliza developed a face rash I cut it out to see what happened. Well i lost 5 pounds and the rash was still there! I just cut out foods and we determined her allergy was seafood. She has since outgrown it but anyway. I have friends who had to cut out gassy foods like broccli and beans and stuff cause it made their baby fussy. I don't know anything about colic but maybe it could be that???

My doctor suggested I could take the route of trying to cut out certain things in my diet. However, Daniel had blood in his poop and I didn't feel comfortable taking the trial and error route. But that is a possibility you could determine it that way. One suggestion is...if you do bottle fed her at times and pump...try just giving her formula for a week or so...if her fussiness clears up...you know it's something you are eating that is coming out in your milk. She might need something as easy as zantac.

I agree, if it is cottage cheese...that is digested food. If she is spitting up when burping or feeding...then that is gas or reflux...if she is vomiting, then that could be something more serious. Either way, trust your instinct....if you think she is spitting up more than typical...then give the ped a call.

Please let us know how she is doing....

That sounds just like pretty normal baby vomit. Some babies do this every feed, some overfeed themselves. Ask your dr what they think, but in the meant-time, as long as she's gaining weight, and is generally happy, just keep on doing what your'e doing.

Jaymes was lactose intolerant when he was an infant. No dairy of any sort for Mommy for 12 months because I pumped! He had breastmilk fortified with formula (soy based) and thickened with rice cereal. He would spit up after every feeding and become a little cranky too. The NICU nurses suggested that he might be intolerant and my mom did too.

You could experiment - try cutting out dairy of any kind for a couple of weeks and see what happens. It's a pain, but well worth it.

I am going through this right now with my new baby (non-DS). I cut out ALL dairy. I am checking ingredients on packages. Anything with Whey or Casein (milk proteins), no milk, butter, cream, cheese, etc and it seems to be working. My new little guy would just throw himself back and scream like he was in pain all of the time. Lots of runny/mucousy stools. Anyway, I cut it all out and he is so much better now. Not to mention, I have lost 15 pounds since I started the "nursing diet". I found alot on the internet under "breastmilk allergy". My doctor also put him on acid medicine too. Good luck.

OMG...I can't imagine cutting dairy out of my diet, but I guess if I have to then I will.

Cara - are you taking a calcium supplement then? I think I read that I would need to...

Cara, fun isn't it? I lost SO much weight doing that when Jaymes was born. Nothing like a low-fat diet to help things along! I'm debating just doing it with this little one to be one the safe side, but don't really want to jump the gun (understand, all of my sisters and I were lactose intolerant as infants, as well as a couple of my neices and nephews, not to mention Jaymes).

I did take calcium (or tried to chose other items high in calcium - veggies and the like).

Bethany, I do take a Calcium supplement. I have found Rice Milk isn't a bad substitute for those cereal cravings. Also, Tofutti makes a great cream cheese and a great sour cream. It is dairy free. You will lose weight fast. I cannot believe how it just came off. Good luck.

Update...
I threw out the idea of lactose intolerance b/c I hadn't really cut it all out...I cut out milk, but not cream chesse, sour cream, etc. So I started back up to see what happened around the same time we got a prescription for Zantac. She seems to be better, although I wish I could have actual test results to know if she really has reflux or not. The signs seem to point to yes...hiccups, wet burps, some spitting up. We'll see...all I know is that Zantac tastes horrible and the poor little face she makes when I give it to her...so cute, but sad too!

Both my boys had digestive issues. My son luke would spit up all the time and would just scream like he was in excrutiating pain, it would make me soo sad. We saw blood in his stool and the peditrician said to cut out dairy products. So I did and it seemedto get better but did not take away the symptoms. We ended up doing an upper Gi and found that he had reflux. We ended up putting him on a specialized formula (alimentum) and Prevacid for the acid reflux. Oh that did wonders!! Anyways my 5 month old started having bad diapers so I cut out all dairy products and it has gotten better. It seems hard but there is alot of good substiutes out there. Good luck with everything!

matthew will spit up but it is not sour smelling...from what i hear this is more towards the reflux issues.????? my first child.....I lookl back and feel awful, as he must have had a severe reflux problem and it was never treated. He is 6 now, but it amazes me the things I have learned since.
