Payton has been congested ever since we brought her home. At first I was thinking she caught a cold from my son, but it hasn't gone away and she has been home for four weeks now. We are constantly suctioning her and have the humidifiers going. I thought, though, that I read something about DS babies being congested as a lot anyway because of the flattened nasal bridge? Is that true or did any of you experience this with your babies? Thanks!

We went through that same thing with Noah. Don't you get tired of thinking "is this a Ds thing or just a cold or what". You never know if it's Ds related, but in my experience most of our precious babies are congested. I can't tell you how many nights Noah spent with the vaporizer going and how many nights we sat up with him not knowing how to get his nose unclogged or how to make him comfortable. And that nasal aspirator thing was a STAPLE in our house, if it was misplaced we'd panic. It seemed like it always got worse at night when it was time for him to sleep and that lying flat was awful for him. I've posted this before, but after months and months of this, and antibiotics after antibiotics, we finally took him to an ENT doctor who put him on Zyrtec, an allergy medication that was given 1/2 teaspoon at bedtime and within 2 weeks everything was cleared up and he never had this problem again. It was like a miracle drug. He stayed on it for probably 6 months and we finally stopped it and he was fine. We had to put him on it about a year later because he seemed to be having a runny nose in the spring with all the allergens and again, it all cleared up. It's completely harmless, nonaddicting and very safe, but I'm not sure how young they can be to be on it. Noah was around 12 months when we started this. It might be worth a try. We gave up on all the infant nasal drops and infant cold medication because nothing seemed to work.

Elainah has been so congested all her life that we have a hospital grade suction machine in our home to suck out the mucous. She is always on something either for infection or for treatment of symptoms, but the congestion just never goes away.

She has lots of respiratory problems that cause her to be more prone to catching upper respiratory stuff-this does not help. She has taken lots of antihistimines but the best ones have been hydroxyzine hcl and histinex hc. Vaporizers do not help her one bit because the added moisture in the air adds to her allergies which then causes her asthma to act up.

When she was a newborn we used salt water saline in her nose, that seemed to help some. Sleeping at an incline may help too...

We're kind of going through this same thing with Karli right now. She's been congested since October and has already had 2 rounds of antibiotics. We just started her on Zyrtec this past Friday. So far I haven't seen a drastic improvement, but it's only been a few days. She's not any worse, so I'm hoping it will only get better. Karli's almost 10 months and her ped. said that she put her daughter on it when she was 9 months old and her daughter is 10 1/2 years old now and still on it. I was so nodding my head reading Vonda's post. Man, if we were to loose that bulb syringe I would just cry. Poor Karli is such a trooper though. She really hates it when I suction her out, but puts up with it. We're also trying one of those HEPA filters in our a/c system to make the air in the house a little cleaner. Hopefully this will work, we're keeping our fingers crossed.

We too have dealt with congestion with kyle since we brought him home. We use lots of saline drops, a nasal sunction bulb, and also have him sleep at an incline. When it is really bad we also use the humidifier. They were a few nights I was scared to death that he would stop breathing, he seemed so uncomfortable. He is five months old and seems to not get as congested but always seems to be aliitle stuffy and noisy when he breaths.

matthew has always been a bit congested. better now than it was. but like vonda said,"you are so worried is it the ds or jsut a cold" all in all....you help them breath better. and now looking back i sucked my other 2 kids noses, saline spray, medicine and now my oldest on zyrtec. we too had a humidifier built in to the house in hopes it would help.....but behold....Josh came walking outt with a filter about 2 inches thick of crap!!!! OMG, I can not believe it has been a 1year 1/2 since we even though about it!!!! No wondor our heating bill was $400 But too we just put a really nice humidifier in the bedroom...it is amazing....he is doing great with that...

funny you should mention it...

Its funny, I was just getting ready to post about this. Elijah is really congested too. I thought that maybe it was just because of the feeding tube, but it's been weeks and he still sounds miserable. I've also tried the saline drops and the aspirator, and the humidifier, but nothing seems to help. I asked his ped. and he said that mostly all babies are congested..."just because they are." What kind of answer is THAT??! So now, I just didn't know what else to try!

My brother was congested for the first few weeks of his life. I believe his was because of the oxygen he had. Because, after he got that taken off, his congestion cleared up within a week or so.
