I have been wondering about this for awhile...
At my 20 week sono, they couldn't "clearly identify the nasal bone". At a follow-up sono with the perinatologist a week later, they identified the nasal bone...supposedly. After that, I was told no worries, everything is fine. Well, low and behold, she was born with DS. SO......now I am wondering....does she or does she not have a nasal bone?! I am assuming it really doesn't matter, but I guess I would like to know. AND....what does it mean for someone who does not have a nasal bone....any "side effects"?

It's just a marker. Drake does have a nasal bone and they could identify it at his 20wk. That's all I know, really. It's one of those things that some of our kids might not have one and some do, like the nuchial fold. Drake doesn't have that either. It's all wierd.

I don't know. Noah has the littlest nose I've ever seen and he was just standing here and I could definitely feel a nasal bone in there, so I'm assuming our kids have nasal bones, but just flatter noses I guess. Can you feel any cartiledge or anything in her nose, she's so small, so maybe you won't yet.

I could be wrong...but I think everyone has one...but in our kids it is depressed. If you put your fingers between your eyes, you can firmly feel the bone. If you look at you child, it is probably much flatter than yours.

Daniel had no markers, so I assume they detected the nasal bone. The space between his eyes is definitly flatter than mine.

Also, just from looking at Daniel, if he had a larger nasal bone, I don't think he would have the folds in the corner of his eyes.

I could be wrong on all this....but this is how I understand it to be. I'll check back on this thread to see if anyone knows for certain.

I just looked more online...
It says some DS people don't even have a nasal bone and that in a lot of DS, they have nasal hypoplasia, which from what I gather, means that the nasal bone could be smaller than normal or irregular, resulting in the flat nasal bridge. But, I still can't find anything on how, if at all, this affects them.

They DO have a nasal bone, but there is a certain time in prenatal development (I want to say 16-20 weeks, but I'm not sure) when in typical babies it is clearly there, but some babies with DS it's so small that it's not showing up yet. They DO have one...it just develops later in pregnancy. That's why it shows up on later ultrasounds. The nasal bone theory wasn't around when I was pregnant with Angela. Now I want to go back and find the pictures of her ultrasounds to see if it was there or not. I started having weekly and sometimes twice weekly ultrasounds at 16 weeks so I should have plenty of pictures around! LOL

Leah, I think you are just about right with those dates. I remember when I had my level 2 u/s. I had to schedule it between my 17th and 19th week if I remember correctly. They said the test had to be done at a certain time in pregnancy to measure things appropriately.
