Ok, I need some ideas? Nolan will be 2 next week (I can't believe it myself) and he still does not stand on his own nor does he walk. Does anyone have any ideas on When or how to get him to do either? His gait is so wide. We see PT twice a week and he has already been fitted for his SMO's (which will be in next week). Does anyone have any sucess stories of having SMO's. I am hoping(more like dreaming) that I put them on his feet and he is going to get up and walk. I know Nolan will eventually walk on his own time. But he is doing really good in every other area except for PT. He is having his dreaded 2yr IFSP meeting next week and I don't think I can take it when they tell me he is at an 8-12 month level. URGH! I hate those evaulations!

Ben started walking when he was 2 years and a few months so I know how you feel! I'm not sure what SMOs are but I'm sure they will help! I got Ben a sit-in activity centre (like a baby walker but without the wheels) and I think that helped his standing a lot as it supported him but also allowed him to stand when he wanted to. The activities round the tray encouraged him to use his legs to turn around. I know some therapists wouldn't agree, but I know it helped Ben a lot. It also gave him time to be upright when I wasn't holding him so he learned independence too. The other thing that helped me tremendously was a book called Gross Motor Skills for Children with Down Syndrome. A fantastic book with step-by-step activities to help with skills like sitting, standing, walking, jumping, etc.Easy to follow and very effective. Well worth investing in as it can be used for many years. When Ben started to walk with support, Iused to sit on a little thing with wheels (actually it was a cooking-gas bottle stand) and hold Ben around his waist and get him to walk along. Part of it I think is the child's desire to stand - when Ben really wanted to get something he'd stand, but other times he would not! Don't get discouraged! I really feel that our children do things and reach milestones when they are ready to do so. Our problem is waiting for them to do it all!! So keep up the good work and one day he'll surprise you!

Coleen

In the same boat here. Robert is two in April. He is behind on his physical development, but what can we do. We have had regular PT sessions, but with Robert it's like he's going at his own pace.

What I am seeing with Robert is progress, maybe not at the level I'd like, but he is making progress. That's the important thing really.

At the moment he's pulling himself up to standing and a few days ago he started to bend his leg and pull himself onto our bed. After a few attempts he made it!

But its been slow for us......what we had to wait for with Robert was for his muscles to develop and for him to get physically stronger. He's getting there.

He also had difficulty understanding or recogising that he could bend his body for the waist down.

What are SMO? I hope they help you make progress.

I don't have any other thoughts, only to say keep the faith. Nolan will get there, just like Robert.
And boy will there be big happy smiles on our faces!!! and tears of joy!! Can't wait for that day.

What are SMO's??? I don't believe I've ever heard of them.

Anyways Catalina is a little bit younger (almost 18 months) but she can only put weight on her legs for maybe 15 seconds and that's with you holding her. I don't think she'll walk for at least another year.

I think it varies greatly though. Try not to get discouraged, he'll stand in his own time! Good luck!

SMO

SMO = supramalleolar orthosis

These are a type of brace used for helping to support ankles & feet.

I'd never heard of STO's either

coleen I so empathize with you over the walking and standing issue

Hannah didn't walk until she was 3mths short of her 3rd birthday and even now she isn't the greatest of walkers

I found myself so impatient and even though everyone said to me, it will come at her own pace I must say that i was impatient of Hannahs own pace and got myself in a right state about it!!

Anyway things that we did to help Hannah to stand as we found she needed to stand and cruise first way before she would even attempt to do any independant steps

Does Nolan have a favourite TV programme or video? The reason I ask is that we used to put Hannah's favourite TV programme or video on and put a table infront of the TV so that if she were sitting down she couldn't see the TV, so the only way to view it would be to stand up and lean on the table. This was how we got her standing up alot and putting weight on her legs so making her legs stronger

Also when we were at playgroup they had an exercise saucer which we used to put her in and that encouraged her to stand and play similar to the one below ( if the link works )

Also does Nolan have a favourite toy at all?

We would stand Hannah up against the table and put her favourite toy just out of reach and then for her to reach for it she would have to take a little step. They say they side step first before going forward and this is what Hannah did.

Feel free to PM me if i can help at all I will

Concentrate on the standing and cruising stage first. Once Nolan has mastered that then you can try and move onto first steps

Hang in there

The exercise saucer in the picture above is the one I mentioned in my previous post. it really helped give Ben motivation to be upright and encouraged him to put weight on his legs for a while whildt still feeling safe. I think the most important thing I learned during the learning-to-walk period was to be patient! It's hard but i believe our children have their own agenda and will do things when they are ready...which is often not when we are ready!! They love to surprise us and it's a great feeling when that surprise comes, so hang in there!!

I think Grady's in the same spot Nolan is. He can pull to stand and he cruises. But he will NOT stand on his own and will not trust himself enough to let go. We (and his PT) are getting a little frustrated. His PT tells me he has EVERYTHING he needs to walk, except desire. He just doesn't want to. She says he has all the muscle strength and coordination he needs, but he just won't do it.

Grady has DAFOS, which are pretty similar to the SMO's I think. I'm sure they'll be great for Nolan!

Coleen, I ws thinking about your post yesterday but didn't get a chance to answer because everybody at my house has a stomach bug--not a pretty thing. When you saw Anna two weeks ago she was cruising around holding onto chairs which she has been doing for months. She took her first independent step (notice I didn't say steps) in August, and then didn't even attempt to walk until late November. I sooo wanted her to be walking by her birthday (dec. 12th). From late November until when I saw you in Pa. she would walk maybe a total of 5 steps at a time, and cruise the furniture all the rest of the time. If where she wanted to go was more than 5 steps away she would drop to a crawl and then get there. It was so frustrating!!!!

So the day after I saw you in Pennsylania I had to take my older daughter to a track practice that was in a college fitness center. They had a big open lobby with nice smooth tile floors and there was nothing in it to grab onto. For the first time, on her own, Anna took off walking. And I don't mean a couple of steps, I mean that she walked 30 or 40 steps at a time, occasionally putting her hands down to rest--and she did this for an hour and a half. (My OT today told me that often kids are encouraged to walk in an open space because they can't rely on the crutch of cruising the furniture that way). I saw some friends there and they said, Oh she is really walking well these days--I was practically foaming at the mouth I was so excited and tried to make them understand that this was a HUGE thing for us!

So what I'm saying is that just when you are ready to tear your hair out that it will never happen--it will.

The only suggestions that I have is to provide some kind of play equipment that Nolan would have to stand at--Anna likes the toy kitchen and the easel that they have at her school so we got her a kitchen for Christmas. She has to stand at it and stretch up to put things in the microwave. If you don't want a girly kitchen, I know they make little tool benches.

Our PT also greatly encouraged the use of scooter type bikes--radio flyer makes a nice wooden one that is pretty stable. apparently you use the same two foot action with a bike that you do with walking. I'm sure you already know about using a walker toy, although I didn't find that particularly helpful.

Keep the faith--that little cutie will walk before you know it.

We have an incrediblock that helped my first daughter to stand alone. We knew she could stand alone, she just didn't want to. With the block she stood at it holding on before she could stand alone and would then start to let go to play with the toys with both hands. It's like she had to start to do it without realizing she was doing it, because if she knew she was she'd freak-out and just sit down.
