Question

Just recently I heard of a 2 year old boy with DS drowning in a toilet. At the time I thought it was just a freaky and very sad accident but last week I was in Melbourne visiting a lady who has a girl with DS who is 3.5yrs and she told me that a couple of months ago Verity(her child) got stuck with her head down the toilet and was blue and not breathing when her 8yr old boy found her and quickly pulled her out. The only reason she is alive is because of his quick actions - needless to say she gave her parents and family a HUGE scare. I was wondering if this is something that is more likely to happen to children with DS or is it just one of those "kid" things. I guess I was wondering if me hearing about these two accidents is a coincedence or if it is a real problem with our kids.

don't know for sure BUT, i would think this is just a kid thing. there's so much for kids to get into to and get into trouble quick. so glad the brother saved his sister. i think back on the things my brother and i did as kids and it's a wonder any of us live to see adulthood. aj

http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml02/02169.html

CPSC reports 16 cases of drowning in a toilet in children under 5 within the period of this study. That is why they recommend toilet latches.

I also found this article from the Mayo clinic:

OMG I am completely shocked at that number Tom....16!

When I was reading this post initially I was reminded of the child my sister told me about. His mother and my sister are friends through their DS support group.

Anyway the kids got himself stuck in the tumble drier! We have front loading machine here in Europe. He's very small and very flexible. His dad ended up having to take the door off the machine to help manover him out.

I still have difficulty taking that in about drowning in the toilet!!!!! I better beware.

Oh no! Thank goodness he found her in time. I believe it's just a kid thing. They can all get themselves in some scarey situations! You can never be too careful with your little ones.

i too never even give this a thought

here in the UK there was a poor child who drown in a bin of bleach!!!

the mom had put bleach in the bin ( trash can I think you may call it ) to clean it out and the child tumbled head first in there!!!, I mean that freaked me out cos its bad enough with water but with bleach!!!

I don't think that cos our children have DS it makes them more at risk, I think my Rebecca sometimes is just at much at risk of having an accident as Hannah.

Our Ped made sure we started closing bathroom doors. She also warned us about an iron with a reachable cord. Her words still ring in my head..."it could kill her". Avery certainly is interested in cords and toilets. Mackenzie left the door open while she was using it and stood up to wash her hands. I hear "MOMMY, Avery put her hand in the toilet and I just went pee in it". So now I am the bathroom door police!
