Question

I have a question concerning shoes for our kids...

Darah is cruising on furniture and starting to spend more time on her feet. She has been wearing the soft-leather shoes since she was a baby. She's never worn hard shoes. For comfort reasons and for style, of course

Now that she's up on two feet, should I be putting her in harder shoes with ankle support? I hate putting hard, heavy shoes on her, but want to give her the necessary support. What's ya'lls opinions???

When Callum started crusining we put him in Stride Rite shoes, they're still light weight and pretty flexible but give more support. The one he first wore looked like this

He wore his shoes for school and had bare feet at home.

Stride Rite's cruising selection is here http://www.striderite.com/jump.jsp?itemID=131&itemType=CATEGORY&iMainCat=30&iSubCat=131&viewAll=1

Jaymes' PT also recommended Stride Rite shoes for him. They are expensive, but they are so flexible. I buy at an outlet whenever possible, but that's just me.

We started with a flexible shoe from stride rite when Anna was about 20 months old. Our PT recommended them. We are about to be fitted for SMOs so after that Anna will be able to wear whatever we can get over the smos.

YEP stride rights!! They are the best little people shoes with the best support. I just bought Jaemen some...They aren't the prettiest but they do the job and he needs the support!

Sean's also grown up in soft-leather shoes (Robeez and such) and has been cruising furniture for about a month. I still use the soft shoes, as they seem to help him grip the floor and move easily. I recently bought a pair of sneakers to try on him and he seems to have a harder time with them.

I am going to stick with the soft shoes until he is walking full-time, and then only use hard-sole shoes for outdoors. We bought 1 pair of Stride Rites for my older son when he started walking and then just bought other brands when he outgrew the SRs. SR shoes are nice, but pretty pricey.

You might want to ask your PT about it too. I let Alex go all summer barefoot and I think he started cruising early to mid summer. Some people believe that they can develop balance easier when they are barefoot so our PT wasn't in a rush to put shoes on him. I'm sure it probably is different for every kid and some might do better with more support. I went to the StrideRite outlet for his first pair of shoes because the ones pictured were a bit expensive. The outlet didn't have the type pictured, but I found another pair with a really flexible sole.

We have a shop here, Clarks, where you can buy crawling shoes - with rubber soles on the toes(!) and a bit on the soles, and cruiser shoes with a bit firmer sole, but still very flexible. And we found them both really useful. Is there nothing like that there?

I think I know where I can find those type of shoes. I did read in my Gross Motor Skills in Children with Down Syndrome book this, " As your child is learning to walk long distances on level surfaces, it is best if she is barefoot or wearing nonskid socks. When she has mastered walking independently in the house for 1-2 months, you cna begin using shoes. The shoes need to have a soft, flexible sole....Even if your child has the perfect shoes that pass these requirements, she will need time to adjust to them...begin using them for brief periods and gradually increase the time as her leg and foot muscles become stronger and she tolerates using them....when she has adjusted to wearing shoes, it is best for her to alternate between wearing shoes and having time barefoot."

I think we'll stick to our soft leather shoes for now, and buy some stride-rites when she's seriously walking.

Thanks everyone for your insight! I love this group!!

Our PT also did not want Kennedy in shoes until she mastered walking. And we really didn't introduce her to shoes until a couple of months afterward. And at that time, the shoe was just too heavy and she could not lift her little feet. So, we gave it a little more time. I haven't had to buy her any special shoes. Her Disney Princess light up sneakers are her favorite. I am so excited for summer. Last year her feet got so filthy walking in the grass, etc. Good Luck! Let us know how it goes.

Abby never wore ortho's, so I went to stride-rite and bought shoes for her there. She has needed new ones every 6-8 weeks due to growth. Her foot seems huge. Size 12 X-wide and she just turned 4.

It's funny but any of the PT's that I have talked to have recommended that I NOT buy stride rite. They said that with low muscle tone that a baby needs more support in the ankle and that stride rite were a little too soft and flexible not to mention expensive. They did push me to put shoes on him most of the time, but didn't recommend stride rite. I found a great pair at WalMart, the typical white lace up baby shoe. They come in regular and wide. Connor has had no trouble with these much more resonably priced shoes.

When Sarah was just starting to bear weight on her legs, our PT recommended Stride Rite because of the ankle support! We just purchased our first non-Stride Rite shoes (New Balance) because they have a deeper heel bed and are better with SMOs. I love Stride Rite. Yes, the are very pricy but they last and last. You can get some good prices here~ http://www.kidsurplus.com/new-striderite.html

BTW, all Stride Rite are not equal. I only buy the toddler tech collection.

Chris

Megan had these in pink..."had" being the operative word.
She would rip those right off and throw them everywhere...we lost one somewhere in the mall!!!
Anyhow, the good thing about these shoes is that they come in so many different widths for kids with wider feet like my Megan.
