We are thickening Darah's liquids to help her because her oral tone is too poor to handle thin liquids. She receives her hydration primarily through her g-tube though. I have a question about thickened liquids...is the volume equal to the hydration? In other words, if Darah requires 24 ounces of water daily, and she receives 24 ounces of nectar thick water, will she be fully hydrated? Or does the thickener make them require a little more? We're a long ways from her drinking 24 ounces of nectar thick liquids regardless, but I'm trying to figure it out.

We thicken all Lexi's liquids as well. She is a big drinker so keeping her hydrated is never a issue. Are you using Simply Thick? It is the best stuff! The more you talk about Darah the more I think she and Lexi are long lost sisters! LOL

I believe it is essentially the same amount of liquid. I have found that if I start with 24 oz of say water and add the thickener to it then I end up with about 26-27 oz of water. It's really not off by that much. I should add that we use the "nectar" consistency. It is possible, I suppose, that the honey consistency would make even more. If you start with 24 oz of liquid for Darah and add the appropriate amount of thickener to it, you should end up with more than the 24 oz. At which point I would make sure she gets it all.

Did that help?
