Question

Okay, I'm all about questions today!

Darah does this thing that is driving me MAD!!! At first, we busted out the camera and took pictures because it was so cute. Now that she does it continuously throughout the day, it's rather annoying. I am 99% sure if for sensory input, but all of her OT and ST's recommendations haven't worked.

What she does is this: she will be sitting looking at something. Anything that grabs her attention. It's not really out of excitement, but rather focus. She tightens EVERY SINGLE muscle in her body, and make a tight oval with her mouth and holds her breath for a couple seconds, then lets it outloudly, holds it again, lets it out loudly, holds it again, all while shaking her tightened arms and legs. We call it her silent scream or her Darah pilates. Do any of your kids do anything similar? Do you have any suggestions to discourage this behavior? I'm not mad at her for doing it, but just worried about why she's doing it and if it's bad for her in any way. When I say she does it all the time, I really mean she does it all the time!!! Probably 100 times a day, conservatively!!!
Here's some pictures of it:

Sorry, I have to laugh, that sounds so funny, "slient scream!" She looks so cute doing it, too!

No, Sean doesn't do that yet, I haven't heard of that, hope someone else has.

ALL of my children did this, but Noah did it more than any of them and for much longer. I had talked to his therapist about this and she said because of his muscle tone being low, he did this stiffening up to feel STRONG. It makes them feel like they have more control over their limbs. Try it. It DOES give you a sense of power and strength. It made sense to me. He'd also grit his teeth when he did it and would turn red in the face and grit so hard that his head would shake. I peed my pants more than once laughing at him.

Could you PLEASE try and get a picture of her doing this, cause I still love it, miss it now that Noah doesn't do it anymore and need a laugh.

So, it's those babies born in August of 2004, huh!? Darah did do it only a couple times a day, and that was cute and fine, but it's kind of taken over my Darah, and I kind of want her back...does that make sense?

I'm about to pee my pants thinking about that, Vonda! Darah grits her teeth too. She's (knock-on-wood) been doing better about not doing it lately. With that, I usually give her something to chew on and it goes away right away. My friend told me that when Darah gets older and when she bugs DH or I, we need to give her the silent scream. I can't wait to do it back at her when she throws her first temper tantrum, but for now...help me make it stop!!!

My husband just got home and saw this post. He says Darah does it at least 1,000 times a day and he's the most conservative guy ever! That does make sense about the muscles.

We never see that one, but this is Elainah's favorite:

We call it her kissy face, but it is not about an actual kiss, and she does it all day long, about as much as Darah does her favorite expression.

Lexi does this same thing! The pictures look like it could be her! I'm not sure why she does it either but she has done it for a long time. She is also a big teeth gritter! Drives us all nuts!

I am dying laughing, I'm supposed to be cleaning my house for your visit tomorrow McKenna, but this is just too funny. So don't mind the mess tomorrow...

You know my Lana does it, but it's only when she's excited about something. She does it about 20 times a day.

always_chaos - that's the cutest thing! I love her expressions!

stephanie - I didn't mind you using Lana, but I am laughing that you called me JANA. I was wondering when someone would combine Lana's name with mine. I was thinking it would be a family member of mine, but it was you. That's too funny! It's Jenna, by the way.

See you tomorrow!

This is too funny...Jaemen does this when he's excited!!! But he SCREAMS at the top of his lungs which is the highest pitch scream I've ever heard!!! My hubby calls it his girly scream it's that bad and SO LOUD!! It hurts our ears if he's in the car and doing it... So, I don't know which is better hearing a blood curling scream or a silent scream...either way its' darn cute!!!

Stephanie, I saw that picture and was freaking out because it looked so much like sweet Lana, and then I was like "oh, she's wearing a Texas outfit," and then I read that it was Lana. I did know Lana occasionally tried the silent scream, but I think it's because Darah has been teaching it to her on their playdates! Darah is a little older and wiser, and I think she's trying to show Lana how to drive Jenna crazy!! It doesn't yet, Jenna, but if Darah works her evil plan right, Lana will be up to a thousand times a day too!

My stomach hurts from laughing so hard. What I'm hearing is no need to worry, Darah is not suffering brain damage from the silent screaming.

Jaemen, no more girly screams. Try a more manly yell when you do your "Darah faces"

Oh, and my little sister used to make Elainah's faces. We would tell Brit to do the "monkey" to get her to make the face. I just emailed her the pictures and she was in love with your Elainah. Brittany did it all the time when she was a baby.

Our SILLY KIDS!!! We need to start a thread on our kids funny faces!!!

See you tomorrow, Jenna...don't worry about the house!!

Chloe does that , only she clenches her teeth and makes a fist. We call it her mean face. Now she does it on command.
Everyone thinks it is the cutest thing. So of course, all my family will say Chloe show them your mean face, she loves the attention.

None of my children with ds do it. However Adrian does it everytime she gets to excited- probably not as long as your beautiful (and really cute illustration)little one.

I call it Adrian's home alone look- cause sometimes she does the hands too! I would hazzard to guess that your beautoiful girl can not get the muscles untightened as fast and that will likely come so it won't be so akwaed later. I know Colin's othe stiff ness issues similar to that improved with time and him gaining strength in other areas
