Tomorrow Karli is having a barium swallow study and an upper GI test done. I have no idea what to expect. All I know is that she can't eat anything after midnight. What have your experiences been?
Thanks,
Shylo

Lexi just had a GI last week. She will have to drink the barium and then they will take many pictures and you can watch it go all the way through. Lexi had her swallow study done at a different time than her GI but they are basically the same. We had a horrible time but then again Lexi is 2 so it doesn't take much. I think it will be much easier witha younger one. If she will cooperate it is really quite interesting, you can actually watch her chew and swallow, see her little jaw working! I wish you luck and will be thinking of you and Karli. Havae sosme food and a drink ready for when she is finished she will be very thirsty and hungry! Also bring lots of toys and books or whatever she really likes. We brought a DVD player so Lexi could watch her signing times videos and it was a life saver.

Hi,

Zack just had a study about a month and a half ago. They sat him a car seat chair and fed him different consistency liquids and it was all white (barium) and very sticky. They took pics while he was swallowing and someone reviewed tape while he was eating and it lasted about 15 minutes. They found nothng wrong and we were sent home.

The hospital never called me to tell when to stop eating or what to eat...but things seemed to work out just fine.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much guys! Well, we got really great news. She doesn't have reflux. We also saw the ENT this afternoon and her hearing is within normal ranges. We've seen such a huge difference in her since she had the tubes put in. The ENT said that the biopsies (sp?) he did of her esophagus came back normal, so we're going to start weaning her off the prevacid. So all in all a good day. She handled the barium much better than I thought she would, but she was also really hungry, so I'm sure that was a factor. Thanks again for all the prayers, they've worked again. We don't go back to the ENT for 6 months! Thanks for the info also, it really helped me this morning just being prepared on what to expect.

Glad everything went well and that Karli got good reports. Brock had a barium and upper GI test at about 1 week of age - so I don't remember much about it except the results were that everything was fine. Take care!

I can't tell you how many of these Angela has had done. Too many, that's for sure!

Only occassionally does reflux show up on an upper GI series. They really should do a milk scan to be sure. That tests lasts an hour, vs. 10 min or so for an upper GI.
