I personally do NOT like them and neither does my husband. This weekend, my daughter spent the afternoon at my parents. My mother gave her a hot dog for lunch. She LOVED it. I never ever thought of giving her one....because I don't like them and I saw some show years ago that said they were filled with all gross stuff.

She really likes them (she has been asking every day for one at lunch), they are easy to make.....So my question is....are they really that bad for you?

Yes, they are, but so are so many things that taste good. If you give them to her, make sure you cut them length wise and then across. Hot dogs are a big choking hazard and even though Elayna is pretty old (LOL), she probably should be careful.

Sarah likes NOTHING...but Stephen LOVES hot dogs! I, too, hate the idea of feeding him such junk, but we do buy them as a "special treat" every now and then. I try to buy the ones that say "All Beef" or "Turkey". I heard that Hebrew National are a decent brand (Kosher..not that I really know what that means???)

I agree with the cutting lengthwise first. Stephen just recently (5 yrs.)started eating them in a roll. He has always asked us to cut them up for him.

My kids love hot dogs. I rarely eat them unless they are the Sahlens brand(I think only available here in Western NY, and they are all beef-oh and ONLY on the outdoor grill).
I don't give them to the kids all of the time. Mostly if their Daddy isn't home for dinner or if we are rushing for some reason. So easy and quick to make!

I never eat them at home, I'll occassionally eat one if I'm out for the day at the zoo or an ammusment park. I think we've let Callum taste one and he spat it out and said "yuuuccckkky"

I always buy the chicken ones, don't know why, but the pork ones just gross me out and they are always so salty, but the chicken and turkey franks are really good, just make sure to cut them up small because my husband's daughter choked on a chunk of hot dog when she was 3 and it was NOT a good thing, very scary. I'd do backflips and cartwheels if Noah were interested in hotdogs.

Yep, Grady gets hot dogs. We like them, but don't eat them that often. Usually only when we're craving them. I buy the all beef ones. I'm sure they're not the healthiest things in the world, but he eats them and that's all I can worry about right now. I need to get some meat on the kids bones.

I also cut them length wise twice and then each piece into a 1/4 inch or less in thickness.

yuck

Personally I am like you. I do not like them. My two kids that are old enough to eat them think they are ok. They are definatly not good for you. They have nitrates in them that are linked to cancer but in doeses supposedly not big enough to do harm. I am always over concious of things and don't want to risk it so they are a no no around here. Not that I am sad about it. If you do decide to have one I suggest Hebrew National which from the couple I have had tasted better than the others plus they are kosher which means they don't have pork in them which is an issue with us as we are not jewish but choose to live a kosher lifestyle for health benifits. Anyway thats my take. If I let my kids have one its chopped up small which I see almost everyone else has already stated

We don't do any beef or pork in our house, and we have never been daring enough to try the chicken or turkey ones.

raised on 'em - the BAD ones. love 'em! BUT, we do not buy the pork ones anymore. you would NOT want me to write here what is in the ones processed down the road - any and everything about a pig that didn't go into some other cut of meat. this is big time BBQ country down here and pork (RED) hot dogs called 'Carolina Packers' sell like hot cakes. full of NITRITE and red dye to top it off. they are still my favorite as far as taste but it's rare i have one - maybe at a ball game. they can't be good for you. but i guess the turkey/chicken ones ain't as bad for you. maybe you could bribe Elayna with hot dogs during one of her meltdowns you were talking about recently? just a thought. aj

I'm pretty much convinced that anything you buy in the grocery store, asside from raw veggies and raw meat, are full of carcinogens that we've just gotten used to eating.

That said, we eat the junk all the time. Well, Dean is in meat sales, so we get all kinds of different hotdogs, brauts, etc (real skin-on weiners) that are the best you can get, but I'm sure they're just as full of crap.

Angela eats hot-dogs about once a week. She likes them cut lengthwize in to quarters, so it's like a long stringy thing.

I buy the nitrate free organic ones (turkey or chicken) for my son. I'll occasionally sneak in a tofu dog which sometimes he likes and sometimes he doesn't. I know, i'm a crunchy CA girl. I am concerned about the nitrates and only buy nitrate free salami too.

Jaymes' #1 favorite food! If he won't eat anything else, I know he'll eat a hot dog. Bad for him? Probably, but I ate them all the time growing up (not that that makes them any better for you). I cut them pretty small at the beginning. Now he takes a bite of one and eats the rest when he's done. Oh, and he eats them cold - bleech!

Lisa

We don't have hot dog sausages here in Ireland so I can't really answer your questions. We have sausages but they are different from the hot dog ones you get in the US.

But a little point comes to mind and I have to respond.

A few weeks ago Robert almost chocked on the sausages we have here in Ireland. With great difficulty my hubbie managed to coack it out of Robert gut, but not before we'd called an ambulance. It was very scary and I don't know how I would have coped if my hubbie wasn't here.
And I know Leah also had a similiar incidence with Angela a few day after us.

To all parents of kids of any age.......

BE CAREFUL WITH ANY KIND OF SAUSAGE.

Make sure they cut small enough.
Sausages are banned on Robert's menu for a while yet.

Well, I'm not such a fan but my kids and hubby love them!!! We buy Hebrew National, they are a little more expensive, but they taste better and are pork free! I'm not Jewish but I'm not a fan of pork in general. My thought on it is they are not any worse than a McDonalds cheese burger and fries!!! just be sure to cut them length twice then into little pieces. But I guess she could probably eat them in a bun but I would still cut them length wise.

Hot dogs fall into the long line of foods that are unhealthy therefore I love them. I love to put sweet pickle relish on them with mustard. That is fine gourmet dining for me. Because they are not good for you, I do try not to eat them often, but our entire family loves them. They do have to be all beef though- only because my family raises cattle.

Shelton's Brand

We buy Shelton's brand through our food co-op. They are nitrate free and come in either turkey or chicken. They are actually very yummy but of course not as yummy as the regular ones. I have heard bad things about nitrates. Health food stores sell them also. They are in the freezer section.

I go to the health food store and get the ones that are nitrate/nitrite free too. They are good.

Every so often when I go the Costco for bulk shopping. I will get a foot long smothered in relish and ketchup.

Mmmmm maybe I need to make a Costco run.

Sophia eats vegetarian hot dogs. She's had the various meat kinds at other peoples houses, but likes the vegetarian ones just as well. They are much healthier for anybody. She also does vegetarian sausage, tacos, hamburger, and chicken patties on occasion and likes it just as well as the meat versions.

I can not stand even the smell of hot dogs. My kids and DH loves them. Yuck. If we have them it is usually the all beef ones. We usually have them on the grill. I will have to try the chicken or turkey. I wounder what the kids will think.

We have a place here that makes the best hot dogs. Unfortuantly it is downtown in the bar area of town. The place used to be called "dirty John's" and thus the hot dogs were called dirt dogs.they have the best meat sauce on them that have won awards. They tried to clean up their image and re named the place "new way lunch' but they will forever be known as Dirt dogs to the locals.
We had a finding Nemo birthday party for the kids a few years ago and I tried to do "fishy" foods. If you take a hot dog and cut it length wise (but leave about and inch at the end uncut)then cut them again. Boil them and they curl up and look like an octopus. The kids went nuts over these. Just make sure to cut them up small before they are eaten so they don't choke!
