Elainah has this problem, and it has only become worse as she has grown. For her it is a problem with her mouth being so small-some say it is a large tongue-but the tongue is not large-just large for her small mouth.

We remind her to keep her tongue in her mouth by saying "tongue in" to her often. Unfortunately, when she has anything upper respiratory she breathes through her mouth so keeping her tongue in is difficult.

Grace's speech therapist says it's low tone in the tongue and congestion. She also said the first couple of winters our babies tend to be congested a lot of the time and get used to breathing with their mouths open.

Grace is only 8 months so the veteran moms might have more to offer.

We did the same thing with prompting Angela to keep her tongue in. We'd lightly touch the end of it (causing the "withdraw" reflex) and say, "tongue in". By two you very rarely saw her tongue. Today the only time you see it is if she's really concentrating on something or she's sick.

HEY Diane! Glad to see you on here!!!
the toungue thing is an EVER issue with Koby! SOmetimes he will go all day with it nearly inside his mouth and the next day OUT. But usually it is out more if he is concentrating on something then he will let his jaw relax to focus on whatever else he is doing! The ST works hard with him on this however it just seems to be the one thing he keeps...and that is okay. WHen he was a baby baby people would say AWW he is sticking his toungue out at me....and i would hate it but Now i don't even realize it!!!-Courtney
