At our ENT appointment Thursday the doc scared me to death. Austin's hearing is great by the way. Tubes in and working fine. But...Austin is VERY congested. And the doc asked me..."When's the last time you saw the cardiologist?"
November
"How's his pulmonary pressures?"
Fine (starting to get really nervous now...
"Does Austin snore???"
Once in a while
"Do you ever hear him stop breathing then catch his breath?"
Occassionally
"Okay, I want you to take him back to see the cardio...we may need to take out his tonsils and adnoids quickly if his pressures have changed."

So I ask Do you mean that snoring is bad even for any child and cause for concern?

"NO, It is of concern for THIS child." (Austin had open heart for Tetralogy of Fallot Repair. He doesnt have a pulmonary valve)

So okay....anyone had an experience like this? Courtney (Koby's mom) said Koby had some sleeping apnea right after heart surgery and that the docs had discused removing his tonsils and adnoids too. I have NEVER heard of a connection between pulmonary pressure and ENT issues. Anybody else??

Austin's appointment is March 29th but now I've thought about it all weekend...gotten nervous and thinking about going for a sooner appointment. I'm so paranoid.

AMY

Callum hasn't had heart issues but he did snore, A LOT.

We never realised quite how much he snored until he had his tonsils and adenoids taken out. The difference is amazing. He never had a diagnosis of sleep apnea but did have huge tonsils and adenoids.

Great news on the hearing test

Amy,

I haven't heard of any relationship either....but I wanted to send some prayers and positive thoughts your way.

Amy, I have heard of this connection. My husband has severe sleep apnea and when he was diagnosed he had to go through some testing to make sure he did not have any heart damage. Apparently if you have sleep apnea you stop breathing and it can cause higher pressure in the lungs, making the heart work harder thus causing the issues.I feel bad that this Dr made you panic but if Austin does have apnea it may be making his heart work harder and that is the concern. He is probably wanting to make sure that this does not cause Austin and additional heart problems. It might be a good idea to look into but don't panic. Even if he does have apnea the T&A surgery usually corrects it. Hannah had apnea and did the surgery two years ago. It has solved her problem for the most part. However when she is congested from a cold I do notice her having episodes again. She had heart surgery but has no issues(ok so a small bit if mitro valve leakage) but it is not causing her any probalems.Don't let it panic you but probably good idea to check in with his cardio and ask him about it.
By the way, glad the hearing exam went ok.

Amy just re read your post and realized you have a upcoming appointment. I think you are good to wait. It's not an overnight thing, it's a gradual build up of issues. If you are concerned you could call them but I really think you are ok to wait until the 29th.

It's great that you already have an appointment. A very cautious pediatrician can scare you many times, but catch the rare thing another one would miss. You're in my thoughts and prayers and I hope these concerns are unfounded.

amy keep us updated

Hannah used to snore but it stopped when she had her adenoids out

as you know she had heart surgery

didn't realise there was a link so definitely raise the issue with the cardio.
