There are no ignorant questions! It is OK to be scared. Heart surgery was the scariest medical thing that we've been through with Jackson so far. But he is doing so great now! There have been several kids with DS born in our area since Jack, and I know that at least 2 did not have heart issues. There is also a new baby, born in Sept., that does have a hole that the drs are watching - they are very hopeful that it will close and he won't need surgery. Good luck next week - I'll be thinking of you.

Callum hasn't had heart surgery.

He had tubes put in his ears at 2 years old which is a very very common procedure with all kids and is an outpatient surgery.

About a month ago he had his tonsils and adenoids removed and a second set of tubes put in (1st set fell out after about 3 months). Again this is fairly routine surgery and he was only in hospital 1 night.

That is certainly not a dumb question. There are alot of surgeries around here. My 5 month old did not have heart surgery but did have surgery for a tumor that is totally unrelated to DS. Other than that he is the healthiest of my children.

The rate of heart abnormalities in DS kids is somewhere around 40%, so there are even more that don't need surgery than do (many that have "minor" abnormalities don't need surgery).
Of course, those of us fortunate not to have had to go through that don't really post about it, so I can see how it seems that "all" of them go through it. You've gotten some great advice here, some of the best of which is to try and relax and "not worry" as much as possible - though easier said than done I know.

You Have a wonderful baby!

I personally know several kids (real life in person ones) who've never had so much as an ear infection!

Although Payton is only 9 weeks old, we have no reason to believe that she will ever need surgery. She has a tiny, tiny VSD that will likely close on its own, but if it doesn't, the doc said that is fine and she will be able to function normally with it.

No question is ever silly!!

My Daniel did require surgery for his heart....he was 8 weeks at time. Since then, he had a cold...but nothing else..and he is 9 months.

My anticipation and anxiety about heart surgery was far worse than the actual surgery itself. For Daniel, he recovered quite well and rather quickly. If your little one does need surgery...you will get alot of support on this wonderful site!

When Hunter was first born, I wondered the same thing. He is now 18 months and surgery free...now we just need to keep him that way

This is a very good question. Sometimes reading all the posts can scare you to death. But it can also bring your awareness up of 'possible' problems. There are a lot of new parent on the forum so this question is very relevant. Here's our story......

Robert has been very healthy with no surgery. He spent his first few weeks in hospital cos he was very small, 3 lbs. 13 ozs. He'd a heart echo done at birth and we were assured his heart was fine. Actually his pre birth scan told me he had a very healthy heart.

I took him home at his birth weight and he has just thrived. He is 23 months old. He's only had one anti-biotic a few weeks back for a chest infection.

Since he turned one our doc noticed that one of his testi hasn't come down, so I have been warned that he may need a day surgery to correct this. We are scheduled to return see the surgeon next Sept. I am not worried, it's a minor proceedure and not related to DS, but just a boy thing.

Hope this answers you question.

Jaymes doesn't have heart issues like half the kids do. He has a PDA - very small - that might require some correction when he's about 5. Otherwise, no heart issues. He's had several surgeries - 3 sets of tubes (only 1 ear infection in his life) and a circumscion when he was 9 months old.
