Ok, I need mega help?!! Natalie is a huge climber! I mean we've found her sitting on back of couch in window sills, sitting on toy box, trying to climb from couch to counter tops, etc! Now it's becoming dangerous! She tried to climb from daddy's recliner to the counter to get some chips off and landed head first on her green rocking horse. It's just that toughy plastic stuff but she came up with a big red knot on her head. How do you get kids to not climb? We thought if she gets hurt, she'll learn her lesson. Yeah, right! Not Natalie, she tried it again a few hours later! She even tries using her baby brother as a step stool if he's there and she wants something up high. We have to keep our bedroom door closed because I've caught her trying to climb my dresser to get to tv buttons. She knows how to climb off stuff but she hasn't learned that there are limits to climbing, ie. we can't walk on thin air! ANY suggestions would be EXTREMELY helpful! ANY thing would be better than my child ending up with a concussion or worse! Help!

Unfortunaltly there isnt a lot you can do, apart from try to move everything apart which is really difficult. When Saul started climbing id go to get his lunch and come back to find him sitting ontop of the TV, or the printer at the top of the computer desk. He was chasing the cats about, thought he could go everywhere they did. Also found him sitting on the chest of drawers in his room. After a while the newness of it wore off and he didn't do it as much, but for weeks you had to dart back from washing up or dinner to check what he was upto all the time.

I'm not sure how to prevent it, but if I were you, I would make sure every bookcase, dresser, etc. is attached to your wall. The last thing you want is for her to climb something and have it fall on her. This happened to someone I know whose little girl climbed her dresser while the family was sleeping and it fell on her, trapped her and killed her. So sad...

Tracy, send a PM to Nicola...she is an expert at the climbing thing...Gianna is an escape artist! I think she may have some tricks up her sleeves.

Tracy,
It's good to hear from you. I'm sorry, but I just had to laugh at the story about Natty using her brother as a stepstool.

I don't have any discipline suggestions for you, but I do have another safety warning. Please make sure that your range has an anti-tip bracket on it. It is a small metal bracket that attaches to the floor underneath or the wall behind the range. The legs of the range lock into it so that a toddler can't knock the range over onto themselves. There have been a few toddlers who have opened oven doors to use them as a step stool. Their weight on the door caused the range to crash forward crushing the toddler. New ranges have anti-tip brackets included with them and installers of new ranges are required to install them. If your oven is old, it might not have one but you should be able to get one from the manufacturer.
