Elainah has had a few rough nights in her lifetime but last night was just awful. She has no fever or anything major going on with her. There have been no changes in food or really anything else. She is not cutting any immediate teeth that I can see. No one in the house is sick. Last night she cried herself to sleep in my arms. She just kept crying and crying for no reason that I could find. I tried all of the logical fixes like a new diaper, drink, a walk up and down the hall, but nothing worked. Finally about 45 minutes later she fell asleep-still doing that breathing you do after a big cry. When I laid her down she slept all of about ten minutes and returned to the loud screaming. At some point during the night I noticed that she had her hand on her head just above her right ear. When I moved her about she quickly returned her hand to this position.

Now, unfortunately our pediatrician does not seem to ever find much when it comes to office visits, so taking her in to the doctor will likely not result in anything useful. He cannot see into her ear, because of her tiny canals, and without a fever he is likely going to say that her holding her hand to her head meant nothing. She has never had a formal diagnosis of ear infection ever. She has had fluid on this ear before. I don't know if this could cause pain, or if maybe she had a headache-don't know if little ones get these or not.I gave her tylenol thinking that something hurt her, and she was up crying most of the night. This was not just a discontent fussy cry, it was a cry of being extremely uncomfortable or in pain.

Her appointment at U of M's ENT clinic was rescheduled until the end of the month so I really don't have anyone to go to about this unless she gets a fever or other syptoms. I will call the doctor's office, and they will see us, but the doctor just laughed at me the last time we were seen stating that since she had breathing problems I could anticipate that she would have difficulty breathing and dismissed our visit as a waste of his time. He called her a "honker" and said that with her floppy airway there is just always going to be some type of upper respiratory congestion and problems. I cannot switch pediatrician's until May, so I am stuck with doctor doesn't want to do anything. Yet he is always more than willing to prescribe whatever it is I ask for and more.

My little girl feels awful-I can tell. She is exhausted this morning and just whining and wanting to be held.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?

Alot of fluid causes EXCRUCIATING pain! I know...I have ruptured my drums several times because of the fluid. It feels like someone driving an ice-pick in your ear!

You know her better than ANYONE, and it sure sounds like an ear infection to me! Angela NEVER ran a temp with an ear infection either, (then again, I rarely had an indicator that she had one until her drum ruptured!) I'd take her to the doc and demand something for her. Can you get her into the ENT? Call the nurse who's on with the ENT's office and explain the situation, and that the ped. is just not any good at seeing in there, and beg and plead to have her seen.

Oh..and you can explain to her ped, that if her drum ruptures from fluid and he wasn't willing to treat her, he'll be hearing back from you and it won't be pleasant! (cuz I'll give you a script to use! LOL)

Switch to motrin. if its an ear infection, tylenol really doesn't help. Try a decongestant and perhaps benedryl as well ..if benedryl makes her sleepy. Benedryl can make some kids hyper. The decongestant should clear the fluid on her ears. Go to the pharamcy or drugstore and look for sweet oil. Its a homopathic treatment for ear infections and may help her . It can be called something else but basically its and a natural oil that will help change the ph level in the ear drum and stop the infection. I'd still take her to the pediatrician. Even if he's an assine individual. If there was something more going on...let it be on his shoulders that he didn't do anything about it. 'Hope she's feels better soon.

Leah: The ENT is out, they called me two days ago rescheduling her appointment from next week to the end of the month. They also said they rarely have any cancellations, but they would put her on the list for a call. She then said the appointment could be as soon as 30 minutes from the time of call and we live almost an hour away.

Amy: I gave her Tylenol w/cod because I knew it was stronger and would likely give her some additional pain relief. She cannot take Benedryl but we have a large variety of other antihistimines in the house to choose from. Two of them are prescribed to be mixed with the Tylenol w/cod. We have used the sweet oil before I think many years ago with my oldest daughter.

Thank you for the quick replies... I will let you know what the doctor says this evening.

Roll on May when you can switch doctors!

Sound slike an ear infection to me and fever isn't always present. If the doctor doesn't do anything and it's just as bad tomorrow then I'd take her to urgent care or the ER.

You sound like a very experienced mother....trust your instinct on this one.
I have a very bad ear problem for the last week with no temp or discharge. Its very painful.
I think I would go to your doctor, insist that she is not herself and request/ demand antibotics be given incase there is an infection in her ear that's not visible.

You know your own baby and something is not right. With an antibiotic you can have the infection cleared up before you see the ENT. Waiting till the end of the month is too long for your baby if she is any pain.

Lets know how you get on.

Ps could she be cutting teath? With teath ordinary over the conter pain medicine work. It's not that, I don't think???

She has 10 teeth now, and does not appear to be cutting any at all. They are in various places in her mouth, but I did feel all of her gums and could not find anything trying to erupt. I don't think it is teething.

Yes Barbara a new pediatrician is the key here. Unfortunately, we are stuck with this on until May. That is when we will switch her HMO plan. She has a PPO as her primary, but we still have to use the HMO as the secondary to avoid out of pocket expense.

It has been a nightmare with doctors and care since we arrived in Michigan last September. She used to have a speciality doctor for her breathing, development, GI, and ENT, but since we have arrived here we have only had the primary pediatrician-and one visit at another children's hospital with unpleasant ENT I would not return to again.

Well, the doctor's appointment got me no where as far as an official diagnosis. He basically said he would treat her for an ear infection just in case, but that he didn't believe that is what is going on with her.

She is sleeping now, it took two hours to get her down for a nap. She is so fussy and unhappy and not at all interested in eating. She has had a few moments today where she acts like nothing at all is wrong, but the majority of the day she has been a clingy little fuss butt.

Here is one of those happy moments:

I will update if anything changes.....

Oh and I mentioned before that she has not gained an ounce in almost four months-well she is down 1/2 pound today. Yes, it was the same scale and about the same time of day as the last few times. 23 lbs. 2 oz.

It really does sound like an ear infection and believe me I have seen a ton of them. I have had tubes as an adult and both of my girls had tubes before their first birthday. My 3 yr old has had more infections that I can count. I don't think either of them ever had fever unless they had something else going on as well. Motrin will keep her from hurting if it happens again until you can get her to the Dr.

Off to the doctor again

This morning Elainah has some crusted blood at the edge of her ear canal-I am not even going to clean it off until the doctor sees it so that he does not think I am conjuring up another reason to disturb him at his office.

OOH, Poor little baby! She sounds miserable. She is lucky that you know her so well and are as persistent as you are! I am so sorry that you all are having such a tough time and that your doctor is a shmuck! I bet you will be thrilled when May rolls on by. Since your doctor will prescribe just about anything, I would treat her like it was an ear infection and start with the antibiotics as well as meds for drying up any fluid. I hope all is better soon!

That is common with ear infections. Once the ear gets too much fluid it will rupture. It does make them feel better because it takes the pressure away. The antibiotic should fix her right up.

We started Omnicef yesterday.... her eardrum ruptured today. He spent almost ten mins trying to remove the wax from her ear to see the canal-and finally he says "yep it's an infection and her eardrum looks like it has ruptured".

She cried so hard she broke all the little vessels in her face near her eyes and on her cheek bones. I just gave her a good dose of pain reliever and we are off to attempt a nap.

Thanks to everyone who has provided suggestions or advice-we were at the doctor's office twice last week and he found nothing, yesterday, and finally today he actually believes me.

Sorry to hear that Elainah was in such pain. My son ruptured his eardrum also--I was sooo upset because he had also been to the doc (by the way he is a typical child with large ear canals). It relieved his pain when it ruptured & now after antibiotics and ear drop antibiotics it healed well and there is no hearing loss. I hope Elainah does well. I love seeing all her beautiful pictures

Poor Elaina, hopefully now it's ruptured she'll get some relief.

I know doctors don't want to over prescribe antibiotics but by the sound of it he couldn't even see her ear drum properly so he should have been more proactive.

Poor thing...I ahve been there. My daughter was not feeling good and jsut crying, so I treated her with some aches and pains and just watched her. Wow, I woke in a panick the next morning when she had blood all over her ear, in her blankets, I felt horrible. As I know first hand it hurt like heck. But it is an immediate relief of pressure.

The fevers I don't think are the tell all with most kids with ear probs.....they seem to sneak up on them and then make them miserable. So sorry...hope she is feeling better soon.

UGH!!! Again...I am getting to this too late, but I have to agree with Jennifer2005 on this one!

As I read along this thread, I immediately thought "ear infection," because it sounds very similar to what Sarah went through recently. However, we have been very lucky so far (as far as our pedi being able to see into her canals), and Sarah was SOOOO uncomfortable and not even close to rupturing her ear drum. In Sarah's case the inflamation didn't even show up until after 5 days of the clinging and crying.

Your poor baby girl!! I hate to see any little one in such pain. So what happens now? Does it just heal on its own?

sarah's mom, they say that the eardrum will heal on its own. She is feeling better since we started Omnicef. It is only bad at night now-I think it has something to do with a change in pressure when she lays down.

She will see the ENT on the 31st so I am sure I will know what is really up with this ear then.

Of course, I am behind too... Poor little girl... Is she feeling better today somewhat?? I can only imagine how painful that is! She has a good mommy to give her extra snuggles and kisses when she isn't feeling well!! Prayers that it heals very very quickly.

this sounds eactly like what was going on with my Megan.
She was always happy and then all the sudden became a different little girl.
I took her to the ped 10 times in 1 months for him to dismiss my concerns that she had fluid.
I took her to a local ENT who said her ears were fine and she had no fluid.
I still knew there was something wrong so i asked our local support group to recommend an ENT.
I made an appointment and took her in.
He was baffled why she never had a hearing test and why they never suggested a specialist see her.
He knew right away that her tonsils and adenoids needed to come out to relieve the "breathing issues"
Then he did a hearing test which confirmed the fluid (she had significant hearing loss).
He wanted it all done as soon as possible.
Hound the ENT, say it is an emergency appointment and try to get her in as soon as possible.

My son, of course did not have DS..but when he was a baby(25 years ago but somethings never change)couldnt lay him down or move his position for the change of fluid in the ear hurt sooo bad....And he NEVER ever ran a fever..Sounds like an infection to me...heating pad or hot water bag helps too..but sometimes you have to put it on the affected ear while holding her...infected ear up...Good luck

Elainah is feeling much better and sleeping quite well the past two nights. I am thankful that the medicine has kicked in. Her ENT appt. is on the 31st.

I will post a new thread about the results of that appt.

Well, I'm really late! Glad to hear she's doing better and sleeping good. Natalie has only had 2 ear infections in 2 1/2 years. Both times I knew something was wrong because her nose would pour out yucky stuff constantly. She was always real fussy and would play with her ears real bad. Now I know what to look for. Oh, and the last time any professional dismissed me with an idiot's attitude, they and their boss got an ear full from me. I'd think of filing a complaint on this doctor. If he has a problem with treating ALL kids then he doesn't need to treat ANY. I would file a formal complaint though. One where he's inspected and then he knows what a REAL hassle is!
