My son Jason has had a slight cough and hacks up "gunk" for about 2 months. His nose is runny almost all the time now and he sounds like he always has congestion in his throat.
The ped is not really concerned, but I wonder how normal this is to go on so long.

Please any thoughts. Do you think I should ask the Ped for an ENT referral?

My daughter is only 8 weeks old, but she has been congested since we brought her home at 1 week old. I have asked the pedi twice about it, as we are constantly suctioning her (and getting stuff out versus getting nothing). The first time, he kind of blew it off as a cold and the second time, yesterday, he said they often see it in babies during the winter...and he offered no solutions.

WELL I'M NOT SATISFIED. So...I'm going to schedule an appointment with an ENT (I don't need a referral with my insurance). I have been told an ENT is a good person to have on your medical team anyway, so even if I'm just going to establish her as a patient, I don't care. I will see what he says about it. A few people on this board (I've posted about this before) have mentioned their kids were put on Zyrtec for allergies and it cleared right up. But the "gunk" makes it sound like you have more than allergies going on. Long story short...go for the ENT...it can't hurt!!

Certainly can't hurt to get an ENT appointment. Jaymes was constantly congested when he was that young too. Even after antibiotics to clear up - whatever it was the ped thought he had (usually a sinus infection) it would come right back. When he was a 1 1/2 we started to see my allergist and he put Jaymes on some allergy meds. That helped, as did taking out his adenoids (not the tonsils though). Now we're right back were we started - constantly congested - with no real answers. The ENT feels it's his size, but won't clean his sinus cavities as he's afraid of stunting the growth of the cavities (with scar tissue, etc.) so he left us to the allergist. The allergist agrees it might be the size - Jaymes' sinuses just can't drain adequately therefore it gets infected. So we're back on the antibiotics - 2nd round. First round lasted 3 days, after the 10 day course. He's clear, as long as we're on antibiotics.

One thing, all that congestion lead (in my humble opinion) to Jaymes having a lot of fluid build up in his ears when he was little. Resulting in hearing loss. Tubes have helped a bit. Sorry for the long discourse.

Alexis does the same thing and our Ped told us that was pretty normal for DS babies due to small nasal canal(I think Cant really remember exact words) but anyway he isnt to worried about it either. I have asked other doctors and pretty much got the same answer but if you want to go to an ENT go. You know better then any doctor because it is your baby atleast thats the way I think so I will keep bugging everyone till I am happy and content with there answers.

Lacey does that alot also and we have been to the ENT alot and he says that it is just due to small nasal canals.. To use the Little Noses saline drops a couple of times a day and suction when needed. He also told me to put a humidifer in her room and leave it on at night to help put moisture in the room. Hope this helps!!!

Elainah has had thick congestion since just after birth. We have tried everything for it.

A couple of things that work, or at least aid in keeping this problem down are:

*Broncho-Saline used in the nebulizer like a breathing treatment. This loosens the junk up quite a bit.

*Suction machine used to vacuumn out the junk so to speak. This beats the heck out of the little nasal bulb. This is covered by most insurance plans if you can get your doctor to write a prescription for one.

*Hydroxazine or Histinex antihistimines that dry the junk up a bit, used short term for some immediate relief.

Elainah has not a bit of a nose bridge and I know that this is a factor for her. She also has a number of other respiratory factors, but most of the time when she is really having a problem it is because of allergies and or sinus problems.

I think it would be worth while to see an ENT just to be sure there is nothing else going on that should be considered.

Here is a picture of the saline I was talking about. Most drug stores and retail chains carry it, but if your store of choice does not the pharmacist can order it through McKesson.

Ethan is 4 and had a green running nose for about two months - which I thought was far to long. I took him to our GP who said it was probably just viral and nothing could be done... So I took him to his Ped and she gave us a saline nasel mist for children, we had to use this 4-5 times a day, Ethan didn't mind at all and after a few days he was clear. It really made his nose run a lot but it was just clearing it all out - after two months of a horrible nose I was very releaved!

this is why I need this site

Thanks,
This is why this group is so wonderful. I have been a little anxious lately but I love hearing how everyone can relate and how they are handling similar situations. Thanks for the input.

I am gonna try the broncho Saline. My oldest son uses it in his nebulizer for his asthma.

For you parents using the antihistamine, do you have to use it constantly? or just periodically as the symptoms pop up?

Short term only, after they dry everything up ones face begins to hurt and you can get cotton mouth. Just a few doses up to about three days no more than that at our house.
