Darah is mainly on a pureed diet because it's easier to get the calories she needs in her that way. She can eat some solids, mostly soft solids (she has a hard time with breaded foods, though).

What are some foods you have fed your kids as they're transitioning to feeding themselves? Do you have any ideas on pureed foods and finger feeding??? For now, she has just been feeding herself crackers and cheerios...but nothing calorie worthy. I'm getting the "little dipper" to try with her with her pureed foods, but doubt she'll get the hang of that for a while.

Kennedy started with crackers as well. We gave her soft french fries, noodles, mashed potatos. She also loved all sorts of canned fruit. Her favorite being mandarin oranges. I am surprised the girl didn't turn orange. We also gave her cut up peaches, pears and bananas. She loved french toast sticks, pancakes and waffles. And canned ravioli but boy did she mke a mess. And also scrambled eggs and toast. We started with very soft foods. And now she eats like a champ, mostly everything we eat. Which is so nice that we don't have to make separate meals anymore.
Darah might just surprise you. We never thought Kennedy would get out of the pureed stage but here she is! Good Luck! Let us know how it goes!

Bananas,Erika takes half a banana and eats it all. Also when we have dinner at the table I sit her in her boostr chair duct tape a regular plate to the table (so she can't sling it off on the floor) and let her eat some of the softer things like peas,or rice just like the big kids seems to boost her desire to eat. I don't feed her myself let her do it i guess makes her feel like a big girl.

Avocados! You can puree them or dice them and freeze them. Their great for the brain too!

Lana's done great with these and loves them with dinner. I can make some for Darah when you come for dinner.

I just pulled this off of http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/tipavocado.htm

Avocado is a wonderful first food for baby! Babies need carbohydrates, and fats as well as proteins for their growth during the crucial first year and even into the second year. An avocado is smooth and creamy when mashed - a perfect food that will be more readily accepted as baby begins solids. As you begin to introduce a wide variety of foods, you will find that mashing an avocado and mixing with applesauce, peaches or pears, bananas and even yogurt make a wonderful meal or snack.

AVOCADO: (one medium)

VITAMINS:
Vitamin A - 1230 IU
Vitamin C - 15.9 mg
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) - .2 mg
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) - .25 mg
Niacin - 3.9 mg
Folate - 124.6 mg
Pantothenic Acid - 1.95 mg
Vitamin B6 - .56 mg
Contains some other vitamins in small amounts.

MINERALS:
Potassium - 1204 mg
Phosphorus - 82.4 mg
Magnesium - 78.4 mg
Calcium - 22 mg
Sodium - 20 mg
Iron - 2 mg
Also contains small amounts of selenium, manganese, copper and zinc.

Here's a great website for all kinds of baby/transition food ideas http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com

Well, it's not the healthiest suggestion, but Sammy's "breakthrough" fingerfood was Cheetos! He LOVES them. And he has just started letting us dip them in applesauce to mix the textures up.

They even make a "Natural" Cheeto that doesn't have that brilliant orange cheese-dust on it!

He also liked Veggie-Stix from Trader Joe's, the graham cracker sticks that are out (particularly the chocolate ones) and Ritz crackers.

As I said, not the healthiest diet, but Sam also needs to pack on a little weight, so we justify it that way!

Good luck!

Beans. You can start with them more mashed and work up to picking up the whole bean. Full of fiber too. I also have heard of lots of kids who love gardenburgers in little pieces - haven't tried with my kids, i just gave them ground meat. Eliza loves ricecakes and i get the ones with seaweed for and extra punch.

We transitioned by giving Anna everything we ate, just cut up really small. Some suggestions--pastina pasta, risotta, pancakes and french toast cut up small, omelets or quiche, and little pieces of strawberry or clementines (which are really sweet). You can make your own applesauce and leave it a little chunkier than the store brand (just peel and chop some apples, cook them on top of the stove with a little water and cinnamon--no need for sugar). I do all my own cooking from scratch, so its easy to just set aside a little bit and make sure it's not too spicy. Anna has also developed a taste for chicken pot pie, beef stew, chicken marsala, and pasta with brocolli.

Our speech therapist suggested the veggie sticks to get her used to biting and chewing--you hold one end and put it in the side of her mouth so her molars get the idea to bite. She was also big on the french toast sticks you can buy from the freezer section of the grocery store.
