We had OT today and she said Lana is doing very well and should be army crawling soon.

Is it typical that our kids army crawl instead of crawl?

Just wondering. Thanks!

Army crawling is a very normal developmental stage, it's just that typical babies do it for such a very short period of time (if at all) that we hardly notice it.

Army crawling happens when the baby is ready to move, but the shoulders just don't yet have the strength to support him. For kids with DS, this stage can last much longer due to low muscle tone.

Leah - Thank you for explaining that to me. Makes sense!

Naomi - Thanks for sharing Callums experience. BTW - he is so cute! I loved watching your flicker slideshow.

Elainah army crawled for about a month and a half before she began her special crawl with her right foot flat on the floor like a bear. She never did the typical crawl ever.

Now that she walks she will crawl with both feet flat on the floor instead of just the one she did for so many months. She can really move quite quickly this way, but I just cannot for the life of me figure out how she manages doing it-it seems so uncomfortable to me.

Hey! Angela did that one footed crawl too! We called it her kick stand that she developed for improved cornering and maneuverablity. LOL

always_chaos - That crawl sounds so cute that Elainah does. I read that in another post and thought that it sounded like a lot of work. SOooo I tried it and think it's very uncomfortable, but fun... LOL!

Ashlyn has been army crawling about 4 months now. She just gets quicker and quicker. I wonder if she will ever crawl on all fours!

Avery still combat crawls when she is tired or has a tough space to go through. Her regular crawl is a one knee and one foot. Now she is in to the Bear crawl (on all fours with her butt in the air). She can really move this way. I literally have to run sometimes to catch her. She is also cruising like a champ and letting go for longer periods of time on her own. Any day now....

Jenna, this is very typical for our kiddo's. Jaemen has been army crawling now for about a month, really well. It leads to the 4 point crawl. He can get himself up to 4 point crawl now, I just think he scared and his shoulders aren't strong enough. Lana is soooo darn cute!!! BTW!!!
