Poor Lana was up all last night and wouldn't nap today and we had no idea why until just before bed time today when I saw the big red swollen earlobe. We got her ears pierced in December and she just now got an infection...?

Her earlobe is swollen twice the size, red, bleeding with pus. This is why my DH was totally against the whole ear piercing.

I took the earring out, treated the ear with peroxide threatment (the bottle that they gave us when her ears were pierced) and then put the earring back in.

When I was cleaning her earlobe she was crying so hard.

Is there something else I should do? I googled it, but didn't get great instructions.

Thanks!

Hmmmm....I bet she's allergic to metals. I got my ears pierced when I was 13, and only very rarely can I actually wear them! (my holes have never closed up, either!) I get a nasty rash from them, even 24K gold.

I have only a couple necklaces I can wear, but I don't react to rings if they're high quality metals. I can't wear cheap jewelry. oh darn.

Wouldn't the other earlobe be infected as well? Would it have gotten infected sooner? Her ears have been pierced for almost 3 months...

I don't know about sooner, but yes, her other lobe "should" be affected as well. Hmmm Maybe it just got caught on something and pulled a bit? Maybe a little tear that got infected?

Hailey had this happen...I squeezed the puss out of her ear at least 2 times a day and treated it with regular hydro proxide...and in about 3-5 days it was good to go...but you might want to get her real Gold earings...thats what we had to do...

Thanks, I'll keep cleaning it with peroxide!

When I googled it a few places suggested to contact your doctor right away... why? She doesn't have a fever and I don't want to go to the hospital just to subject her to getting sick...

Jenna:

Two things come to mind, first if you have any baby oragel in the house put it on that area to numb it up. Then get some neosporian the kind with pain reliever that will work great. The problem with peroxide is that while it kills infection and bad stuff it kills the good stuff as well.

One likely reason for the infection could be that she may drool or get milk from her bottle on her ear or other substances such as food or whatever. While these are harmless in to the inside of our body, areas like lying underneath an earring could easily become infected.

As far as allergies go-my older two girls have their ears pierced and did fine while they were babies with the 22k earrings my mother in law purchased in her country, but once they switched to the cheaper kind their ears stayed infected. Some allergies develop over time and exposure and it could still be an allergy. You should probably go to a jewelers to find some actual baby earrings of a better quality. There are some really nice ones that are not too expensive at most jewelers. They have screw backs and the posts never bothered my nieces at all.

I had my ears pierced twice as a young teenager, as both times they became infected. I found they would swell, bleed and puss. My mum would take the studs out and clean them but when she went to put them back in they were to swollen to go through the hole. The pain of her pushing it through made me pass out once.
We decided after the second attempt and even trying the allergy earings with the same results i let them close up. For years i would get small hard lumps form in the lobes where the holes had been. Now i haven't had any more piercings, wouldn't like a swollen nose or bellybutton.

You could try the allergy ones incase its metals shes having a reaction to or it may be her body doesn't like earings all together. hope it clears up soon

Halle's ears get like this too. I try to keep 14k gold ones in her ears, Walmart has a great selection and very afforable. They also have the surgical steel ones too and her ears do great with these, but I have found that she just cannot keep earrings in for weeks at a time without me taking them out every now and then and cleaning her ears with peroxide, it's like the earring becomes embedded in her ear and that's what makes them sore.

DJ doesn't have earrings, but I do

I have 5 holes in each ear. I have to wear either silver or gold in them - surgical steel works too. The cheaper metals make my lower holes itch and swell, and the upper holes get infected, so check that. Also, if the backs are tight, there can be buildup of soap, shampoo, etc unter the backs and THAT is not good (my mom used to take mine out EVERY night )

Good luck

Ok, so Lana's earlobe is not going to fall off. It's all healed. My DH was laughing at me for being so worried and said that I did the best thing by having her ears pierced. He loves them. YAY he said it! Why am I surprised I'm always right.... j/k.

Thank you all for your posts and suggestions.
