Since I have spent hours to put some pics in my signature I feel, like I should introduce ourselves.

My name is Ulli, I am 37 years old. My husbands name is Walter and we have two kids, Benni and Marina. Marina is born with DS, which I did not know during pregancy. She is a healthy little girl, very stubborn, but very sweet.

After visiting kindergarten for two years I have found out, that our elementary school, the one, where Benni is going to, is willing and ready to let one class of the school for children with special needs in. So there are two classes (the regular one and ours) that learn together in one classroom. School integration is not usual in Germany, thats why I think this is like a lottery winning to us. But I had to put her to school one year ahead, she was only 5 when she startet school.
The teachers were afraid, she could not stand the long days, since she is very small and tiny. But after all, they found out, that she is the toughest of all her 5 male classmates. The big girls just love her, and so far there is nobody that doesn't like her. I walk her to school every morning and in the afternood I take the luxery of the bus bringing her home.

In the last months we were afraid of Marina having coeliakie (?), since her blood (antigliadin) said so. But since she didn't show any of the symptoms, we had to check in hospital with a biopsy. The intestant(?) looked like she coudn't eat gluten anymore, gyt the pathology didn't, so once again we were very lucky.
Marina has had a lot of tubes in her ears, and she is very near sighted, but other than that, so far, there are no health problems.

Benni loves Marina and they hardly ever fight. He is so proud she goes to the same school like he is. When I ask hin, if he had the chance to have Marina with our without DS, he would rather have her with.

I hope I didn't forget anything, if so, let me know.
And please excuse my poor writing, I can talk better than write in english.

Welcome! Your kids are beautiful. Thanks for introducing yourself. I love hearing about how things are for kids with Ds in other countries.

And don't worry about your English... it is perfect.

Hallo und Willkommen

Thanks for your introduction. It's so great to have you here at downsyn.

Ihre Tochter ist absolut schön! My husband and I picked the picture that we will print and hang in Lana's room. We will use "This guardian angel is Marina" or something like that. Thank you for the permission. I'll email you what we end up printing.

You already know my history in Germany through our PMs, but I'll add here that I'm Mom to Nate 2 1/2 years old and Lana 10 1/2 months old with ds. We were surprised at birth too and thankfully Lana has been mostly healthy.

I'm very glad that Marina is doing well.

I look forward to getting to know you, Marina and your family better.

Tschuess für jetzt!

Hi Ulli, Welcome to you and your beautiful family

Callum also tested positivie for Celiac on the blood test but has no symptoms. Here they wont do the biopsy unless there are symptoms and don't advise you to change to a gluten free diet unless you have a positive biopsy! So we're just waiting to see if he does develop symptoms.

Glad to hear that your school is willing to do inclusion

Naomi, over here the doctors told us, that there can be celiac even without symptoms. And only the biopsy can tell. But I heard that 50% of Ds have wrong-positive(?) blood test. So I guess there are a lot of cases like ours.

Welcome! Your children are very beautiful. I think you did a wonderful job of introducing yourself. It sounds like Marina is doing great! I have a granddaughter named Olivia, who is two years old. Your daughter sounds a lot like my granddaughter. She is very tiny and sweet, but can be tough when needed! Olivia is in a playgroup, which is part of her Early Intervention program. I believe it's like a little preschool program. She attends once a week, and there are five children in her group. She is the only girl in the group, and my daughter-in-law said that she handles herself very well. She doesn't let the boys get away with anything! But, she has an older brother (2 years older), so she has had a lot of practice with him. Her and her brother adore and love each other so much, too. That doesn't mean that they don't fight occasionally, but that is only normal. Sometimes we have our grandson without his sister being along, and the first thing he says is, "I miss my baby sister." So sweet!

~Cindy~

Welcome! It's great to read your intro. It sounds like Marina is doing well, that's wonderful that she started school early and is in an inclusion program. Hope you enjoy DownSyn as much as we do!

Hi Ulli

thanks for the wonderful introduction and those lovely pictures of your children

I think your English puts mine to shame!!! and I have no excuses!!

My husband works over in Germany every month ( in Munich ) and he is currently learning German but I'm afraid I have no such gift in learning another language, so I am glad your English is very good

There are quite a few people who have joined recently from Germany, you never know you will be organizing a meet up next

Hannah also is included into mainstream school and loves it. Her class mates adore her

welcome to the site and look forward to hearing more about you

Jo

Hello and Welcome! My name is Veronika and I'm the proud mom of four kids. Olivia is my youngest and is in a mainstreamed preschool (as opposed to a "special needs" program) and she is doing well. All of her classmates adore her and watch out for her (she is very tiny in comparison to the other children!)

I always love to see folks on the board from other countries (esp. Germany as my parents are imigrants to the US). However, my ability to speak Deutsch is almost non-existant !
