All of this talk about beds and climbing lately....

Darah's really starting to climb, not higher than onto the couch, but she'll be climbing higher soon, I know and I'm PARANOID of her attempting to climb out of her crib. It's at the lowest setting and her head already clears the top. Especially since we haven't been able to x-ray her neck yet, I'm so nervous I'm ready to take everything that she could climb on out her room and stick her in a toddler bed!

What age did you put your child with DS in a toddler/regular bed?

Nicholas turned 2 last April, and we put him in a toddler bed last summer when he started climbing out of the crib. I was a little nervous about it, because he's a pretty restless sleeper. I figured he'd be falling out of it all the time. But he did wonderful with it!

Well Miss Laina began throwing herself out of the crib initially. She then mastered climbing in and out. Since the safety served no purpose I moved her to a toddler bed.

She does get up some during the night, and we have found her on the floor next to the bed, and even under it. However, falling a few inches far outweighs the potential injury of falling from the crib. She was about 18 months old when I made the switch.

McKenna, funny story, before Olivia was born we tried a toddler bed for miss megan so that Olivia could have the crib...not such a good idea.

We set it up in the middle of the room w/ pillows around every side and put a baby gate at the door in case she woke up and tried to escape.

My main concern was her tossing and turning and I was scarred she would fall out of bed so I kept checking on her every 30 minutes or so but feel into a deep sleep around 1 am...I jumped up and it was 5 am and I got nervous that I hadn't checked on her. So I ran to the bedroom door and she was gone...not in her bed!

I hopped over the gate (the best I could being 9 months pregnant) and looked in the closet....yelled at the top of my lungs and Joe and Joey ran in...she wasn't in her room but where could she be...my husband came in and lifted up the toddler bed and there she was sound asleep on a pillow under the bed! ROFL now!

That scarred the dickens out of me

We will try again soon since the toddler bed is so close to the floor...no harm no foul RIGHT?

Hey girl - Of course I haven't hit this milestone with Lana yet, but I saw recent pics of Darah's crib and noticed bumper pads in it. If they are still in there you may want to take them out as she can use them to climb up and over.

We put Nate in a toddler bed at 18 mts and everybody thought it was too early. It will be interesting to see what everyone's response is.

Thanks Jenna! I just went into my sleeping baby's room and took it off as she was sleeping. She didn't budge. I am so dumb because I took her pillow out of her bed for this very reason, but didn't think of the bumper!!!

Mikey was 7 when we took him out of the crib. But he NEVER tried to climb out of it unless we were right there next to him and he could use us for support.

Robert is still in the cot/ crib. I think he'll be there for a while to come. After the summer I'd guess. He isn't walking so I don't want him crawling around upstairs in the middle of the night. I need time to child proof the upstair.

He's in a cot bed, so I'll just have to push the front under the base if you know what I mean.

He's still very small and light .... 21lbs 3ozs at last weigh in. He's two in a months time.

Callum has been climbing for a long time and is 36 inches tall. He has never ever attempted to climb out of his crib. We have a toddler bed set up in his bedroom but he shows no interest in sleeping in it. We're currently thinking about redoing his room to be more of a big boy room (he's 3 next week) so maybe we'll try the bed out again.

When we do try if again we'll probably put a gate on his door so that he can't wander. The upstairs is pretty safe but I know he'll go straight into Kieran's room and wke him up.

I've been wondering about this myself, as I'm 6 months pregnant now & Sarah's still in her crib. I know with my oldest, we didn't have the stress of a new baby coming to worry about when to make the switch. Emma never climbed out of her crib, and was quite happy with it (we did take one side off at about 2) until she was over 3. Then I decided to buy her a twin bed. Now, with Sarah turning 2 next month, and the new baby due at the beginning of June, I'm wondering when to make the switch. I know the new baby will be sleeping in our room for the first couple of months, but I'm not sure if it's such a good idea to try to make the switch after the baby's here. I'm worried she might get defensive about her crib, lol. So, I'm thinking about buying it for her birthday & making a big deal out of it, and see how it goes. If it works, great, if not, then I'll wait. She fights going to sleep most nights, so it should be interesting to see where she ends up in the morning. LOL

We put Beaux in a toddler bed just before he turned 2.
He took to it right away (it looked just like his brother's which he LOVED).

It is a Tyco Firetruck bed w/ high sides so I didn't have to worry about him rolling out. He stays in it very well and only wanders into our room in the middle of the night once in awhile.

I did hear him downstairs one night but all our doors have alarm chimes so he couldn't have gotten outside w/o us knowing.

Jaymes is a superclimber (I blame it on his therapists! LOL!) - he'll climb on ANYTHING - except his crib. Never once did he try to climb out of his crib. We just moved him in February to a twin bed so we could get ready for baby #2. He's done very well in his bed - only fallen out twice!! LOL!! Yea, I feel pretty bad about those, but he's no worse for wear. We have a rail on the bed. He doesn't try to climb out if he wakes up - he'll sit up and yell or start to cry. He'll get in and out of his bed (thanks to a step stool at the end) when he's awake, but never when I put him down to sleep.

Neither Colin or Melea ever climbed their cribs or even gates (till last week on gates). Adrian was my crib climber!!!!!

We moved them into beds right after they were walking around their 2nd birthday! I made a big deal and Daddy and I made them a cool bed and re did their rooms and such !!!

Colin has a hummer bed- that closes him in- but he can climb out or open door and get out. Since we moved he has taken to draggin his sleeping bag and tent near door and sleepining there in middle of night.

Melea has a sand castle bunk bed- sort of enclosed her- she really started out in it at age 2 and 3 months (it took a while to make and daddy thought I was crazy!) She slleps in it about 2/3 of time however she is a night terror- waking up at all hours and plays- so we have had to install a gate on top of her gate to keep her in her room.

Angela moved to a bed at 25 months, when she flipped herself out onto the hardwood floor.

I just used a regular twin mattress and put it right on the floor. Worked great.

Kennedy climbs all over the place but has never tried to get out of her crib. She is 30 months and still loves her crib. I do have a Princess toddler bed here but we are waiting on her. I would also have to gate her room because she is not too keen on getting down the stairs yet and I would never sleep knowing she may take a tumble. We may try a bed only because she is so restless at night. Sometimes she gets stuck and it wakes her up.

Hannah is in what we call a cotbed here in the UK

here is a picture of it

its sides are a little lower than a crib We put her in it when she was 2 years old

she once tried to climb out of it and hurt herself when she landed on the floor so she has never tried to climb out of it again

I would like to put her in a bed with just a little side on to protect her from rolling out, but we are going to move house first ( 2 weeks time!! ) so will wait first until we move house

Tom,
May I ask the reasons you decided to wait so long to move Mikey from his crib?

I placed Darah's crib mattress on the floor last night just to see. She went right to sleep. I then decided to try naptime and see how she'd do. It took her a little longer, and I had to go in there twice to put her back on the bed, but she's snoring away!

I'm going to do this for a little bit and if she does okay, I think I'm going to make the switch to a toddler bed. I have been having nightmares about her climbing out of her crib and paralyzing her body, so I just have to try for now. If she doesn't do well, I think we're going to purchase a crib tent, which is a net "roof" for the crib.

Dylan will be 3 next month and he is still in a crib. He doesn't try and climb out so I'm in no hurry to put him in a regular bed.
