Talking

Well...you can start calling him cowboy Sam! Sam will start hippotherapy this coming Tuesday and I am so excited (especially since it is covered by our insurance...can you give me a yeeeee haaaaaa!). I have read tons about the amazing benefits that kids reep from hippotherapy, theraputic riding and just spending time with the horses. I will post pictures and let you know how it goes next week.

My question is has anyone else ever done hippotherapy or theraputic riding and how did your child benefit?

Oh I'm so excited for you! For YEARS I've said I was going to do it with Angela, only to find it's either out of my budget or there is a HUGE waiting list! I'm jealous. But it also reminds me to check into it again. THANKS!

We did it for years with Mikey and we even sent him to a hippotherapy camp during the summer. Mikey loved it. He benefited by improving his coordination, concentration, and strength. The therapist also worked on speech and signing. We had to give it up because there were only so many hours in the day.

What great news how did you get your insurance company to pay?

I picked up a leaflet at our last buddy walk and I think Callum would love it. Let me know how it goes and I want to see pictures

some of you have asked about insurance...well this is how it works as far as I understand. It falls under PT or OT or speech...the therapist is who would have to be in your insuance plan and they would be (in our case) a PT and they bill it as if we were going to a facility/clinic. Our insurance for some reason limits the number of home visits per year but will actually pay the therapist more and make us jump through fewer hoops if we go to a clinic or therapy center(yes even with the new laws about least restricive/natural environment). So although our PT (different than the the PT doing the hippotherapy)can't come to our house any more we can go to her house and the insuance will pay her and actually pay her better(I don't get it). Our insuance sees hippotherapy and aquatherapy as forms of PT...I think. We just have to get a script from our doctor and a letter of necessity stating that yes indeed Sam would benefit from this sort of therapy and we had to make sure that the place where Sam will get hippotherapy works with our insurance and we are good to go. They won't cover music therapy though...I have tried to get that for awhile but I have to say I have been pretty pleased with our therapy coverage and they pay I think 90%.

Also I don't know if they are actually coding if under "hippotherapy" or just PT. I assume that they are using the horse like they would a therapy ball or other adaptive equipment. So although your insurance might not have "hippotherapy" listed in their covered benefits if the therapist who would be doing the hippotherapy does (PT,OT or SLP) then you might be able to get it covered...I sure hope that makes sense.
happy trails
