Has anyone tried to potty train early? When we met with Dr. Leitchman this weekend that was one of the suggestions that he had to avoid problems later. He said that he had kids with Ds that were potty trained by 18 months by starting when they were babies and doing it without pressure. I was kind of shocked since Carson is only 5 1/2 months, but, I do know people that have done this successfully with typical children. I am open to try but it is going to be a challenge because I work full time and I may have a hard time getting the daycare to get on board. If anyone has tried, please let me know how it worked for you. I am still struggling trying to get my 3 year old to use the potty with any consistency. I have told her for several months that Carson was going to beat her. That really would be something if he does .

Our PT is Chinese. In China, they start potty training when the baby has head control. Basically, you just put the baby on a potty periodically or whenever you can tell they are about to go and then verbally reward them everytime they go. If they don't go, there is no negative statements. We started doing this with Anna when she was about 9 months old. Generally when we put her on the potty she will go--last night she kept saying "Peepee and poopy in potty", but she will never iniate the process. I leave her in diapers because it's winter and I'm not ready to really push the issue but I think this summer I may just take off the diapers and see what happens. Our PT says in her experience with kids with Ds, if you wait to late to start it becomes a battleground between you. She finds that it is much more gradual, but less stressful process if you start early. I don't know how you will do it with daycare (although I hear this is a fashionable thing to do these days) but you might want to just do it when you are home.

Wow, 18 mts is early, but to read Mary suggest starting at about 9 mts ... OMG.

I'm behind, Lana's already 10 1/2 mts old. She's waking now so I'm going to put her on the pot. Great another thing to add to my list... But it will be neat to see how she does and what she thinks about it.
