How do I know if Hunter is getting dehydrated? Are there any signs besides the soft spot should sink in? He has only had a small bottle of mostly water since last night. I tried to give him some pedialyte and he refused to drink it. He keeps shaking his head 'no' at anything I offer him. He is so exhausted-all he wants to do is lay down with me. Any ideas on something I could try to get him to snack on too? He hasn't wanted to eat either.

He needs to be peeing. Is he peeing as much as he normally does? I think at his age he needs a minimum of 3 wet diapers a day (I'm sure someone will correct me on that number. LOL) Also touch his skin, they usually feel kinda "doughy" when they're headed towards the dehydrated state. Poor baby! I hope he's feeling well soon!

We just went through this with Grady. Here's a couple things the nurses/doctors asked me.

*Is he crying tears (Grady was not, but he does not typicall cry tears, but I just told them NO, so he would get the help he needed)
*Is his mouth wet? - Grady's was very dry. He lips were beginning to dry out too. Looked like he needed chapstick.
*And wet diapers - this was hard for us too because he had diarhea.

Elainah likes pedialyte popsicles. We make them out in one of those little homemade popsicle trays.

She also likes finely crushed ice with a bit of pedialyte over it-like a slushee.

When Hannah was little she used to dehydrate easily. Our Dr always tried to get her to try a popsicle or even a lollypop because they were concerned about her blood suger levels in addition to dehydration. You may want to check in with your Dr just to see what they would recommend and how long a little one should go without fluids.

Our ped told us wet diapers at least every 10 hours. When Anna gets sick like that the only thing I can get her to "drink" is watermelon which is mostly water. She won't drink milk, water, juice, pedialyte or gatorade, nor will she eat yogurt, jello, or a popsicle (all things our ped told us to try). She will eat the watermelon though so try that if he'll eat it.

When John's dehydrated he gets lethargic and his mouth gets very dry. We gave up on the Pedialyte because none of my kids liked it. We use watered down Gatorade for the little ones when they're sick. I like Mary's idea of watermelon. That sounds yummy to me!

I think you have gotten some great advice from everyone. My experience has been that Avery's diapers smell like amonia! exactly like it. I try with fruit juice popsicles too, pedialyte pops, drinking from cups with straws or even sucking water from a clean washcloth (sounds weird, but Avery loves it) and ice chips. Keep trying, something will work!
