BABY CHICKS!!!!! My mom and dad live next door and they have 11 chickens, and Noah just loves them. Then our other neighbor bought some chickens, and got some fancy ones and he just went crazy over them, SOOOOOOOOOO being the weak mommy that I am, I ordered baby chicks. Now hold on to your seat, I ORDERED 40. Yep call me crazy, but I got this fancy chicken book and just had to have 1 of every pretty chicken in there, so I ordered 40 and we got them yesterday. Actually we got 41, cause they sent us a free gift, but I think the FREE GIFT died, along with one other tiny little thing so we now have 39. We have one of them up in the kitchen by itself because it's the runt and it's not looking too perky. They are SO SO cute and Noah just loves them. Some of them lay pink, blue, green and lavender eggs and I can't wait. My husband is building the PRETTY chicken coop this weekend. We have to keep them inside for about 4 weeks. They don't stink now, but I'm SURE by the end of 4 weeks they will REEK. Here are some pictures below. They are 48 hours old.

Amy you must look through this catalog below. This is where we ordered our chicks. They are just too cute. Our chicken coop is gonna be the regular chicken coop style, but I thought we'd paint it really pretty and maybe put shutters on it and some window boxes with flowers, ha ha ha.

Ok, I HAVE To dig out pics of Angela the chicken lady! Before her dad and I got divorced, we had hobby farm. I couldn't wait to get my chickens. I had so many different kinds. And I was clearly a little weird with my hens! (think how I am with my dogs, now apply it to chickens!) Angela's favorite thing to do was get my egg basket and head out to the coop to get eggs. She was FEARLESS when it came to the roosters (we had 2 nasty ones) and becuase she didn't run, they didn't pay any attention to her.

One morning I couldn't find her. Looked out the window to see hear headed across the yard in a diaper, wearing mud boots and straw hat and carrying the egg basket. That's what I got a picture of. I'll have to see if I can find it.

She did NOT like the chicks though. Too much fast movement or something I guess. Here's a fun game to play with chicks. They are attracted to color, because in the wild color + food. Take a milk cap ring or something bright colored that they can't swallow and throw it in there and watch the tug of war! My boys used to love to throw worms in to play this game. LOL

I thought you were going to say you had an alligator in the basement. I confess I was a little disappointed it was chicks, although they are awfully cute.

Let's see, I've tried puppies (we have to wait for a new one), kitties (he actually almost agreed to this one!), goats (pygmies of course - it was free!!!), but I haven't tried chickies yet. Wonder if I could get DH to agree to that?! Highly doubtful. Besides, I think that would negate my father EVER coming over to visit as he dispises chickens - something about growing up on a farm....LOL!!! I suspect his job was cleaning the chicken coop or something.

I can't wait to see a picture of Noah with the babies!! They are adorable.

Leah that is so cute and I just KNOW that Noah will be heading out to the coop to collect the eggs too. That's another reason that I got 40 chicks. I knew some would die in transit, but I also know that we'll probably get a few nasty roosters. I ordered as many females as I could, but some of the chickens were STRAIGHT RUN, which means you get whatever hatches. Some roosters can be nice, but if ONE of these roosters flops my leg or any of the kids, it will be GONE, don't know where GONE, but GONE. And the weird thing is is that I am scared shitless of chickens, so I'm gonna have to get brave really quick.

How adorable they are!! Your kids must be thrilled...I agree, you are a way cooler mom than me!!

I have a silly question....but I honestly don't know the answer. How long do they stay cute chicks? When do they become chickens?

Also, what are you going to do when you have 40 chickens running around? Won't they multipy or will you only keep the females and maybe eat the males?

Will you eat them for dinner? I can't imagine you running out back to get a chicken for dinner!! LOL....

We have had a regular little farm here too. Have 5 cats and 1 dog, plus 2 MALE hamsters that suddenly had BABIES, 7 of them to be exact, then the cat caught a baby squirrel, so we had that till it died. Then the cat caught a baby rabbit and we had that till it died. We usually have about 5 turtles during the summer months and we tried pygmy goats when Peyton and Sophie were little and OMG never again. We had them for 3 weeks, and one of them DIED, which was horrible, but I remember they were so little that we gave them baths in the bathtub and they drank milk from baby bottles, so so cute. We ended up giving the other one away because she was so sad when the other one died. We also have ducks on our pond and might get a few babies to add to them. My girls now want a chinchilla, YAHOOOO.

How cool...can't wait to see pictures of them all grown up. I have a strange fascination with pretty chickens....they are beautiful. My husband thinks I'm a big weirdo when I tell him that I would love to live somewhere where we can have chickens running around the yard.

Oh, I think by 10 days they're already getting some feathers. The feathers on the ends of their wings come first. By 4 weeks (I think?) they look like small chickens and are very much loosing their cuteness! Their colors look NOTHING like they do as chicks. LOL I had some beautiful hens, and one adopted dog who really liked a couple of them too..... If your dog even THINKS about chasing one, correct her right away. Once they learn to chase them, your chickens (or the dog) are done for!

Jennifer - I used to talk about my chickens all the time. A couple of my more beautiful hens in particular. One day my husband looked at me and said, "The first time you bring one of them in the house, the ax comes out!" Well....about 2 days later one of my favorite hens wasn't well, and when he came home from work I had her on my lap in the living room! HAHAHHAHAH

Each hen has her own personality (yes they may not be bright, but they do have a personality) and watch out for your garden! Remember when I talked about color? Well all those beautiful flowers that become veggies will get eaten, along with any flower beds. I had one pumpkin that was HUGE HUGE HUGE. One day my sis stopped over just to see it, and when we got out there, I found a hole the size of a basketball in it! Neatly pecked by a few chickens of course. I was sooo upset. The only way to keep them contained is to fence OVER the top of the chicken pen too. But I liked mine running, because they really do keep the mosquitoes down. But I swear I had some mutant birds. One day I watched them chasing eachother around the yard. One obviously had something the others wanted. On closer inspection I discovered they were fighting over a bullfrog! LOL

Well, we only have 7! 3 Buff Orpingtons and 4 Sex links. The cutest thing is when Peter goes out with the cracked corn and feeds the chickens. He signs "chicken" and loves to see them. I agree with Leah, train the dog. We have a lab (a bird dog!!!) and when we first got the chickens, she loved to chase them. Now, she doesn't give them any notice!
Good luck and start finding neighbors who need eggs.

Oh this dog will not be NEAR these chickens I can assure you. We're gonna have a huge fenced in run for the chickens that is no where near where the dog will be, plus we have the underground electric fence and she KNOWS that if she gets too close she will be zapped to the other end of the yard. She learned her lesson the hard way!!!!

My DH orders from the same place. We have about 10 chickens (2 of which are roosters) 3 ducks, 9 pheasants, 15 chuckers(partridges) 4 dogs 4 cats. Does that make me crazy? The ducks are mine.. the rest of the birds are Dh's. We are currently trying to hatch our own in an incubator. Alyssa loves her animals. She even collects the eggs on the weekends(DH does it during the week) The chicks are cute when they are so little

You are a brave mommy-taking on a chick raising challenge. I commend you,and hope that you are not run out by the smell of little chicks. Ok, so what do you do with them when they leave the chick phase?

I am sure Noah will enjoy them.

Well they have to stay indoors in the basement in a round homemade circle with a light above them for heat for about 4 weeks. They grow SO fast, as Leah mentioned, so by next week they will be twice their size. Then we are moving them out into a little fenced in area outside,so that nothing can get to them, again with a light for heat. They'll be there for about 4 more weeks. Then we will move them to the chicken coop, which will be surrounded by a 7 foot fence so that nothing can get to them. My husband is also putting chicken wire or some sort of fencing on the top side of the fence so that nothing can get them as well. Our neighbors lost about 10 of their chickens because chicken hawks were swooping down into the chicken coop and eating them. Don't need that!!!! When they finally get out into the coop, then it's a breeze, just feed and water them and let them run around and collect the eggs and have fun.

They eat baby chick starter for now, which is finely ground up corn. Later they will eat regular corn and laying mash, and bugs and anything else they can get their beaks on. When I ordered them I had the option of having them vaccinated at 12 cents a chicken so I did that. We have only had 3 of them die, and the rest look really healthy. The ones that died were just SO tiny, half the size of the others, so I don't even know why they would send them. I make the kids wash their hands after they play with them, but don't have to worry about Noah. He wants to hold them so bad and when I take one over to him to place in his fat little hands he screams and runs and says "no no no no shhhicken bite me", ha ha ha. We already have names picked out, but we aren't gonna name them until they are big, because their colors change and we really aren't sure if they are boys or girls. I ordered mostly girls, but some I didn't have the option to pick girls, they sent whatever hatched. Below are some of the names that the girls and I picked out, perfect chicken names.

Girls - Gladys, Betty, Abigail, Lucy, Henrietta, Bertha, Olive, Ethel, Hazel, Matilda, Martha, Darla, Edith, Fannie, Gertrude, Mabel, Ruthie, Sadie, Wilma, Mildred, Wynona, Annabelle, Beulah, Chloe, Flossie, Vernie, Charlotte, Maude, Francis, Naomi, Hilda, Opal, Sylvia, Eunice, Thelma, Agnes, Pearl, Edna, oh the list goes on and on.

Boys -Clyde, Clem, Horton, Roscoe, Zeke, Milton, Orville.

OK, I must admit I am rolling laughing at you and the chickens. You did at least answer my question - I was hoping you had a rooster. Chickens are about the nastiest animals alive. I can't wait to hear future chicken stories. I would do lots for my children, but, I would not have chickens - you have got to be Mother of the Year.

I have never known ANYONE who had a pet chicken...ANYONE!! And I come on Downsyn, and it's like if you don't have a chicken you're not in the club!! If chickens are like ducks, then I too am afraid. I have had a couple of not-fun experiences with being chased by ducks...one of them fairly recently!!

McKenna you will just die when I tell you that I went to the feed store today and bought my dad 4 baby duckling for his pond. My mom and dad live right next door, so the kids can see them all the time. OMG they are SO SO cute. I got a black one, a brown and yellow striped on, a tan one and a yellow one. Noah is in love with them and they are so tiny. We'll have a regular farm pretty soon. Downsyn.com will have to come to my petting zoo!!!!!!

Oh and I am scared of big ducks too. When I was little I had a pet duck named WOODSIE and my mom dressed me in my best outfit and I went outside to wait for her and this damn duck chased me all over the yard and I ended up running up a RED MUD dirt pile and falling and rolling the whole way down. I was in SO much trouble. My mom didn't care that I was nearly pecked to death by the duck, but I got my GOOD outfit dirty. She made me sit in the kitchen ALL day and watch her iron. I'll never forget that.

Are you sure these were attack ducks and not geese? I have never seen an aggressive duck, but the geese out on the golf course will chase you in a heart beat. I almost fell over laughing at my husband when he had to leave his golf ball behind because they goose claimed it. That same goose claimed about 20 golf balls and I must admit she could have had mine too - I was afraid of her.

You think ducks are bad, try a goose. Our next door neighbor had two of them growing up and they were the meanest, most vicious animals around. If we ran through their yard (which we did at least 10 times a day) they would chase after us snapping and honking. When they got a hold of you they left a nasty mark. My father had a special hatred for them. Every night when he drove in the driveway he would honk his car horn at them. For a while this drove them crazy but then they got used to it. He decided to really drive them around the bend and got an Ah oooGah horn installed which he would blare at them and they would go into a frenzy. I have fond memories of my father trying to devise ways to torment those geese.(and he was the gentlest of creatures when it came to all other types of animals).

Oh Vonda! I was attacked by a duck too. I was about 3 and it had ahold of my yellow jacket while I screamed. We have 2 dogs(both are shelter rescues and one of them I am fostering and treating for heartworms and then he's off to a good home),some fish, a cat named Thelma. We have had lizards, a snapping turtle about 10 pounds, a pig, guinee pig,2 frogs we raised from tadpoles, and about a million dogs. Funny thing is I brought my latest rescue dog home and my hubby is furious because he pees everywhere and it STINKS. He says never bring another dog home again. Well his birthday is coming up and I've bought him an English Bulldog(which he's always wanted), but he says he never wants another dog! I've paid for it, and the owner is moving to Iraq for 3 years, so I have to take it. I may be divorced over this dog, but it's a coming to my house. Next month I'm bringing him home, and a chair that the dog has grown attached to. Hope I can find a place to put the chair.LOL. I just wonder what he's gonna say. Oh, and I had a goat when I was a kid. My dad kidnapped it from a biker gang who owed him money. The goat was their mascot. They got it back when they paid the money back! Funny, my parents got divorced shortly after that. Did I mention the goat was an inside goat? He ate part of our couch, so I was told. I have always wanted chicks. they lok so cute, but theni remind myself that so did that darn pig. Now I don't eat pork, and believe me there is nothing like it until you have a pig squeeling through your house sh****** everywhere. Yep, I like chicken too much, and I don't think I'd be able to eat it anymore. Are you planning on just collecting eggs, or are ya gonna be ringing some necks and frying up gizzards soon?

Shea I will NOT be ringin any chicken necks. Bleck. BUT if the roosters are mean, they are gonna go. I'll get my dad to take them off and do whatever with them because I won't tolerate that, especially if they get mean with Noah and Halle, I'll just have to kick them into the next state. We plan on selling the eggs to the local farmer's market. It's neat because 4 of our chickens will be laying the very colorful eggs like Martha Stewart's chickens, the blue, green, lavendar and pink. My mom already has chickens that lay these eggs and they are SO pretty, will be great for Easter. I bought a few signs on ebay "CHICKEN CROSSING", and "FARM FRESH EGGS" to put on the coop. I feel like a little kid.

And we rescue cats here. My husband is beside himself. He HATED cats when I met him, but he has grown to like them a little bit. I have catfood in the back of my truck just in case I see one along the road that looks in distress. I have found so many abandoned kittens, have STOLEN 3 kittens on 3 different occasions from a neighbor down the street who was not taking care of her animals. She has a dozen cats and none of them are spayed or neutered so they are having babies all the time. It's sick. We are down to 6 cats right now, one inside and the rest outside. I can't imagine not having pets.

I read the post about the chicken poop first and then came back and read this one. I just have to say . . . . . 40!!!?

You are one CRRAAAZZY LADY!! Please keep us updated on the ongoing chicken story. And I LOVE the pictures! They are soooo adorable (trying not to think about the poopy butts here). I'd love to see how they all turn out as fancy chickens.
