I found this HYSTERICAL article from "Housekeeping Monthly" magazine, published in 1955. The title is "The Good Wife's Guide." It contains "tips" for how to be a good wife.
1. Take 15 minutes to prepare yourself forhis arrival home. Touch up your make up and put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking.
2. Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.
3. Over the cooler months of the year, you shoud light a fire for him to unwind by. After all, caring for his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.
4. Prepare the children. Take a few minutes to wash their hands and faces, comb their hair and if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part.
5. Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise from the washer, dryer or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet.
6. Greet him with a warm smile and show your sincerity in your desire to please him.
7. Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first, remember the topics of his conversation are more important than yours.
8. DOn't complain if he is late for dinner, or even stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he may have gone through that day.
9. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.
10. Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgement. Remember he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and integrity.
I was laughing so hard I almost choked on my lunch. I don't think it is physically possible for me to do ANY of these things. How things have changed in 50 years!

Are we on planet earth? I don't think my mother even did these thing. And Rick's got another thing coming if he thinks I'm gonna do any of this, especially taking off his shoes. Do they suggest with a 10 foot pole? (hee hee) Hey, and what about when we get home from work? Don't we deserve some of these things too?! They are only the masters because we said they can be (hahahahaha).
I really did enjoy reading these.

I don't know if you watch MTV, but the commercial for the upcoming season of the Osbournes parodies these "guidelines" - clever and cute.

Can't belive that this guide is only 50 years old, it's mazing how much things change in such a relatively short period of time. There's no way Mark is master of the house, I think Callum takes that title.

Thanks Kerry for something light hearted today.
I have see this before. It is way to funny. I love the idea of putting a little ribbon in my hair to make "his" day a little brighter. Too funny. And the light the fire one, well that just made me bust a gut. We rely on fire for heat in our home, and I'll be damned if I am lighting that fire FOR him....it is for me....tee hee But honestly, I have to say. Thank goodness he gets home before me, so it is MY MAN who lights the fire, and greets me at the door with a smile, only no ribbon in his hair.....tee hee.

Thank you after the nasty post this was nice...I have a cookbook form the 50's that was my Grandma's and it has an entire section of how to be a perfect housewife! It is Hysterical to say the least...Thank God we have come a long way, I would of been an "old maid" if i would of had to follow those rules!

The real funny thing is that I read the list to my husband, and he responded..."What's so wrong with that?" I know he was kidding. He better have been kidding. He works the 11 pm to 7 am shift and occasionally he comes home on a Sunday morning and wonders why there isn't bacon and french toast cooking. I just chalk that up to sleep deprivation.

I'm disappointed ladies.
Isn't that what you all do each day??
I think I sometimes manage no.6! And as for no.2.....it would certainly make life VERY interesting if I was "a little gay"!!!

Okay Nicola, alright.. I do some things that some woman do consider to be old fashioned. Like for example, and this is true, I swear. EVERY morning, since I get up an hour and 15 minutes before Manny, I bring him Coffee and a small breakfast when I wake him up, sometimes just toast or cereal, but on Fridays eggs and bacon. Now on the weekend he always brings me coffee. I also make his lunch every day. They guys he works with are extremely jealous. But I do these things because I love him with all my heart, and he appreciates and shows me that he does. No my ex...
different story, but we will not go there.........

Right after I got married, a home ec teacher showed me the article in the original magazine. I copied it and then framed it. It gets big laughs from everyone who sees it. There is also an old song about the same thing. I can't remember who sang it but it went something like "turn on the music, pour the wine". It was defintely from the 50's.
