Katie Beckett Waiver Questions

Here's one for all of you in "progressive" states which have the Katie Beckett waiver.

Were you put on a waiting list for benefits and if so, how long did you have to wait? Also what state are you in?

Texas has it's own form of Katie Beckett waiver hidden under a different name. However, the state is able to put a limit on the number of participants so there's a waiting list. A long waiting list. And of course not many in the state government know anything about the program.

Thanks for your help.

We have Katie Beckett in RI. With the help of my EI special educator, we put a pretty large package together to get the best shot at approval. We put letters from all doctors, every therapist, my ped, my dev ped, myself as well as my special educator. Once we submitted all of the paperwork with supporting letters, we had an approval in about 2 weeks.

I don't believe RI has a waiting list. I could be wrong, but during the process of phone consults during my application process, no one ever said anything about a waiting list.

Hope this helps. If you would like to see the letter I wrote, I'd be more than happy to send it to you. Daniel was approved when he was around 3 months old.

In Wisconsin there in no waiting list. We fill out paperwork annually, and have visits from the regional Katie Beckett rep bi-anually. We have never been denied. I have been told that Wisconsin is among the best for their Katie Beckett program.

This is great information...thanks.

Evidently each state can approach the Katie Beckett waiver differently. Here they applied a limit to the number of participants and it's created a waiting list of several years. Hopefully we can get that changed!

We have a waiting list in NY but it wasn't a long wait. Openings come up as kids age out of the program.

Gregg, I used to sit on a state board and that was something we discussed was limiting the # of people at a time. That would have created denials of new kids and kids who had at one time been in the program. We decided that was NOT the direction we needed to go. Some benefits were lessened or tougher to get, but they were the ones most rarely used. It is too bad that some states make the program almost impossible to enroll in or get services from.

In CA, ours is called the Institutional Deeming Waiver. DS alone qualifies you along with one qualifying service (i.e. PT, respite, OT, etc.). Regional Center referred us and Jack was approved within the week.
