Expecting mom who has DS

This was posted on the down-syn list serve, thought I'd go ahead and cross post it here.

From the original poster on the list serve:
Quote:
Maria Gabriela, 27 and Fabio, 27, have lived together at her mums house for 2 and a half years. Recently the guy, who has mild palsy due to a fall in childhood, noticed that Gabrielas belly was moving. Gabriela has DS. They told her mum, who was surprised, bt then got very happy with the news. A specialist, Zan Mustacchi, says the whole scientific society is proud of such a consented and welcomed pregnancy - other 6 cases that are known of in Brazil were consequences of rape. Genetic tests were performed and apparently, Valentina, the name they chose for the baby girl, will not have DS. Theres a video on the link bellow. It is in portuguese, but you will be able to see the couple.

Here's the link, when you get there, copy this A espera de Valentina into the search bar to view the video.

Oops! Here's the link: http://www.mundorecord.com.br/record.jsp

I watched it, and everyone seems very happy. What I didn't like was towards the end everyone crowding around her putting their hands on her belly. More like an object than a pregnant mom. Otherwise, it was a neat video to see.

Very interesting. I read about a mom the other day that adopted a child and the birth mom had DS. The child didn't have any delays either. It is going to be interesting as more people with DS lead normal lives to see what will happen. I guess the jury is still out on whether men with DS will be able to father children- of course every book says no- we will see.

I just posted this on the News Articles, oops that will teach me to check

My friend sent it to me ( who is from Brazil )

Of course I can't understand a word they say but I loved seeing her and I while there does seem to be lots of people touching her belly, I think that will happen as its so unusual, especially as they say the baby does not have DS

I must admit if I were there I would be touching her belly too Embarassed as I love pregnant bellies anyway

doesn't she look lovely though pregnant

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I mean neither knew she was pregnant until her belly was moving? I don't know. I've seen a few couples with Ds that got married and didn't want kids because they said "it was enough to take care of each other". I thought that was very wise. For Noah, I think that would be the case as well. I can't imagine this couple raising this child without a LOT of help. I mean it's good if they can, but I'd be scared. Maybe it's just me. Don't want to ruffle feathers here, but I've always felt that God made Noah sterile for a reason (assuming he is sterile as I believe most boys with Ds are). He is here for other purposes on earth than to create babies. Just my opinion.

Vonda, I'm not sure they KNOW boys with DS are sterile. I think it was ASSUMED because men with DS weren't given the opportunity to have relationships. I haven't been able to find any type of study showing that sperm studies have actually been done. As I said in another post yesterday

Quote:
How many parents of teen or young adult men with DS are going to bring them into a clinic to have a sperm count done? "C'mom honey. We're going to see a special doctor today. Here's a magazine and a cup.....let me tell you what to do with the cup."

I just don't think anybody REALLY knows. I think it's a good thing this couple lives with the mother, because I agree the young woman with DS is going to need help. I'm not sure, but I think the father doesn't have any type of cognitive issues, just CP.

I do know a few adult women with DS who would probably be more capeable of raising a child than many young adults who are not cognitively disabled.

Thinking about Angela, and her anger outbursts, it would scare me to death to think of her having a baby. As one young newly-married woman with DS stated (I think it was Sujeet's wife) she'll have enough to do to take care of herself!

When Elias was born and started reading about DS, reading elias was sterile made me sad because he will never knew what does it means to be a father etc .... but then i guess i thought like you, but now reading and not knowing really if he is sterile, i really don't care much. he's just 3, and Im sure God will do amazing things on him. Some people are made to be parents and can't have kids, some people aren't good parents and have various of them. I guess in this crazy world, God only knows WHY

In Elias' school there are parents with disabilities that take their kids to therapist... amazingly, to see them, and inspiring. I love the movie My name is Sam, is very touching

my friend posted this link to her picture ( again all in portugese )

http://agenciainclusive.uniblog.com.br/

According to my friend she is due April May time, so we shall have to see how she gets on. They're not living on their own so at least there will be someone around

when I worked there were 2 adults with special needs that got married and she was rushed to the hospital with stomach cramps and it turned out to be labour and she gave birth that day to a little girl. There is nothing wrong with her and she has been the joy of their lives and bought out the best in them.

In the US you dont touch others (friends and family of course) pregnant bellys ?

I didn't saw it badly in the brazilian video, i guess they just wanted to feel the baby movement.

I still can't see Noah as a father. He wouldn't have time anyway. He'd be playing Playstation all the time. Razz But I will say this. He'll be the best uncle any child ever had!!!! Wink

some trnaslations

Maria Gabriela Andrade Demate, 27 years, who has down syndrome is pregnant 7 months long, and the baby will be born without any genetic alteration. A study prenatal was made and got back that the baby doesn't have down syndrome.

Acoording to the specialist (u/s and ob), Kleber cursino, one f the integrants of the team that is with Gabriela's pregnancy, there's no signal of DS, or of any malformation in the baby girl

Laurinda Ferreira Andrade, 51 years, the mom of the pregnant woman says that the family is happy with the results and is happy and waiting anxious for the Valentina's birth.

Fábio de Moraes, 27 years, the father of the baby has a mental delay because had a cerebral lession when he was a kid.

Zan Mustacchi, says that the case of Maria Gabriela is weird, and the majority of the cases of pregnancy of woman with DS are because of rapes. "i dont know a case like this. i had 6 patients with DS pregnant and where because they were raped"

Acoording to Cursino, the woman with DS have their reproductive organs wellformed, but the rate of fertily are lower than typical women. And the fertility of man isn't know yet. Also said that a woman with Ds has a rate of 50% of having a typical baby , 40% are afected in some way, and 10% of being aborted."probably the babies afected will be espntanous aborted too"

Laurinda lembrou said that the preconcept of the families doens't permit the persons with DS to have a normal life

"they are in love. the history of Gabriela and Fabio is very pretty. and I will be taking care of Valentina with both of them" said the mom of Maria Gabriela (i couldnt understand the whole parragraph)

somwhere else i read that Ma. Gabriela has always took natation, ballet, gymnastic, ride-horse but she has always been overweight, so they didn't notice anything unusual

They met in an association called Associação de Pais e Amigos dos Excepcionais ( exceptional friends asociation)

Once you get to the page, make sure you paste the name of the video into the page's search bar. It doesn't come up automatically.
