Thumb Suckers, Pacifier Users

What does your baby do to self soothe? Cameron loves his hands, he will put his whole hand in his mouth and suck away. Sometimes he will just suck his thumb or his two middle fingers. He also puts anthing he can get in his hands into his mouth. It is too cute. He won't take a Paci unless he is tired and I hold it in his mouth for him.
My fear is that Aubrey sucked her thumb until she was 13 Shocked and it was miserable trying to get her to stop. Shane took a Paci until he was 2 and a half and then I took them away and he was done. You can take a Paci away but you can't take a thumb away. Crying or Very sad

Noah never took to a paci but, within the past month and a half he has really found his hand. He sucks on either just his thumb or most of his hand. He mostly does it when he is getting tired. I'm not worried about it at this point. Hopefully, he will outgrow it on his own.

Nichole does hand sucking as a "fun activity" only. She will not take a pcifier. The only think that works is...me Smile Or just let her cry it out until she falls asleep (when she is very tired).
Ellie, my 3 year old (almost) still suchs her fingers.

My little guy, Brennan, LOVES to suck his thumb. None of my other kids ever did this - two of them loved their paci's and the other one didn't want his thumb or a paci. I think it's so cute seeing Brennan be able to soothe himself to sleep.

Patrick also sucks his thumb or a couple of fingers. He also takes the paci but I think he prefers the hands/fingers better. One day he was sucking so hard that he left a mark on his hand Crying or Very sad . I love watching him do it, looks so cute. Very Happy

This sounds like Jacey. I have only seen her suck on her thumb a couple of times. Most of the time she just chews on it. She won't take a paci either.

Zoe likes to suck her thumb, hand, fingers or paci... she's getting really good at soothing herself to sleep by sucking her paci and holding her blankie... It is so cute! I just sit there and watch her!! Sometimes she even enjoys sucking her finger and paci at the same time! Yummy!

Katelyn loves her thumb too! She even tries to suck it while she is eating- and I have to pull it away. She is always sucking on her left thumb- I am hoping she is not left handed (just because that will make everything backwards for her right handed parents), but there are those genes in the family. (I know it is too early to even think about that.)

I *wish* Benjamin would take a paci!!!!!!!! Andrew used one until about 15 months, and it was very nice to have. Benjamin just gags and spits it out. Sad He does like to suck on his hands and his fingers and his thumb. Who knows if it'l end up that he's a thumb sucker. He doesn't necessarily do it when he's tired or anything, just if his hands happen to be there, LOL. It does worry me a bit that he might suck his thumb. I would rather he didn't b/c, like you said, it's hard to break them of it.

Wow! I thought I was reading about Mattie! The only difference is she will still take the Paci some, but not as much as she use too. When she's tired, she likes you to hold it too.

My boys never had pacifiers (never offered it to them and they were never thumb suckers), but with Quinn we tried it just in case - but she didn't want it. She also doesn't really suck her thumb. Sometimes she will chew on her hand, but not much. She mainly likes to do her scratching thing with her nails (scratch them against surfaces to hear the noise).

Thought I would chime in. Joel still sucks his fingers on his left hand... it has been so bad that he ate away a few layers of skin around his 1st birthday. I wish I would have started redirecting when he was a few months old.

I would try to redirect as much as you can. Joel is 26 mths. and I now have a chewy tube attached to his shirt all day because his need for oral stimuli is overboard. His obsession with putting his hand and everything in his mouth actually interferes with learning.

Great tip! I keep telling my MIL and others to not allow Zoe to suck her fingers too long, just take them out and insert the paci Smile
My MIL is obsessed with trying to get her to suck her thumb! It makes me so very angry!!!! Evil or Very Mad

BTW, Joel is so cute!! I love his pool! He looks like he's having so much fun!!!

I'm the mama of a toddler thumbsucker and an infant who looks to be following in sissy's foot steps. I am also a former thumbsucker. Smile Neither of my girls would take the pacifier.

My ex, his dad and aunt all sucked their thumbs into their early teens.

I let Cameron suck on his hand for a bit and then try and get him interested in something else. The hard part is at night when we are all asleep. He self soothes with it and we don't even know. I will wake up and his thumb is in his mouth and he is fast asleep.

My sweet Lily (8 mo.) is a complete left thumb addict. It has definitely interfered with her push-ups and rolling. She will remove the thumb for food which is a good sign of her survival instincts. Yesterday, I noticed some of the skin was wearing away so I took action. I put a sock over her left hand. She is not interested in the sock at all. I've had to change the sock after every feeding, but she's been pushing up, rolling over and trying out the fingers on her right hand.

Aleena still sucks her thumb when she is tired, or stressed (such as watching fireworks). She is 4.
My son sucked his thumb until he got braces on his teeth at age 11.
Unfortunately you can't take away a thumb.

Well Noah never sucked a paci or his thumb (sometimes the back of his wrist), UNTIL he quit taking his bottle and then in went the thumb. He really only did it when he was tired b/c he needed both his hands to crawl. Once he started walking though the thumb sucking really picked up. Now he pretty much only does it when he's tired or watching tv, and mostly only when he has his blanket. I guess maybe when I get hard core and make him stop, I'll just have to take the blanket away Crying or Very sad Oh, he also likes to take the corner of the blanket and poke it in his ear while sucking his thumb. It is really stinkin' cute. Smile
