Help with starting food

We've only given Benjamin food three times and I know it's all so new, but he's not "getting it." Does it take them awhile to understand how to swallow? He seems to like the taste of it and even kind of dives for the spoon *sometimes* but mostly he just sticks his tongue out and/or spits it back out. I'm perfectly fine taking it slow, but I wondered if this has more to do with the DS or just a baby thing (I don't remember what my older son did, but I don't think he had issues). Will it take him a long time to understand how to swallow? He's a great breastfeeder but won't take a bottle, if that matters at all.
Thanks!!

Vinnie is finally "getting" it now. Just keep trying everyday. A couple people had posted web sites that helped them so I hope they hop on and post them again. Vinnie will not do a bottle either...more weight off me! WOo hoo! LOL

HI,
My twins are around Benjamin's age and they too have tried cereal around 3 times. I wouldn't say either loves it yet, but Noah has definitely never swollowed it yet and pushes it out with his tongue. I'm taking it slowly. Formula and/or breastmilk is enough for them nutritionally for the first year. Some babies don't like cereal at all and get more into the food when it's more flavorful. If he's growing i wouldn't stress.

Angela - Have you tried to play around w/ the texture and/or temperature of the food?? Jacey likes her stuff thicker - it's easier for her to manipulate in her mouth. Maybe Benjamin is having trouble getting the food back where he can swallow it because it's too runny. Also, Jacey doesn't really like her food chilled, or even room temperature, for that matter. She likes it warmed up a bit. Hopefully that's all it takes for Benjamin to start eating. Is he working w/ a ST at all?? Sometimes they have some good ideas as well. Good luck!

I don't have any advice but I just wanted to chime in and say that we are having the battle of the solids as well. Let me know if you find any tricks that work...
