All Advice Welcome

Yusuf is 16 months old now - he is a lovely boy and we all enjoy him. However, where we live there are no facilities for Downs Syndrome children and I would like any advice I can get with regard to early intervention. He isn't up on his knees crawling yet although he can "commando" shuffle himself across the floor. Should I be doing any physical exercises to strengthen his leg muscles. I notice his feet go off to the side when I try encouraging him to walk. Also should I start doing any therapy to help with his speech at this stage. Appreciate any advice and encouragement - many thanks Very Happy [/b]

Peyton is about to turn three , he has been having PT, OT , ST, and a special instructor all provided by early intervention. In speech and OT we do alot of puzzles , animal sounds, putting things in and taking out. Pressing buttons on toys. Playing with spoons and cups ( stiring with the spoon in the cup. Putting toys under a towel and having him find it. Now PT sitting on a pot and standing up. Leaning forward on his knees. Going up stairs while holding your hands leaning forward not back. Hope this helps.

Katrina

If you are needing to do therapy on your own, I highly recommend any of the books from Woodbine House - http://woodbinehouse.com/

Click on "Topics in Down Syndrome"

Start off with the Gross Motor, Fine Motor and Early Communication Skills.

There is an entire early intervention program designed for use at home. Even though it is useful for any children, it was based on the Down Syndrome Unit at Macquarie University in Sydney. It is a bit hard to find, but worth the search. It's called "Small Steps" and one of the authors is Moira Pieterse. I have lent my copy to someone so I can't remember the other autor (Sue Treloar comes to mind but I could be wrong). It is very compact so won't cost too much to post when you find it.
