Hello, just curious if your baby uses or used a pacifier? Patrick will take it but only for 1 or 2 sucks then he tends to let it fall out of his mouth, not as if he dislikes it but more like his tongue is in the way. but if you gently hold it in his mouth he goes to town on it.
What are your experiences with pacifiers?
Thanks

We had the same problem with Andrew as an infant. His tongue thrust wouldn't let him keep the paci in. I never really pushed the issue, as I really didn't want to have to break the habit down the road, but would hold his paci in his mouth for him to calm him if he needed that extra bit during the day. Eventually he found his thumb......and has been quite fond of it ever since. Now I'm wondering if I should've pushed the paci....you can take a paci away, but your thumb is kinda hard to remove!

I feel the same as for breaking the habit when he is 3!! At 6 months old he's not interested in his thumb either.
MomToAndrew what part of MN, I'm from Osakis near Alexandria.

Andrew will be 4 on Feb 1st and, if it's up to him there's no way that thumb is coming out yet! My daughter will be 8 on the 25th of this month and she's still got her thumb too. I broke her of the habit when she was around 4 years old....but that only lasted for about 6 months & she was back at it. My oldest son sucked his thumb till he was 8 as well....the only thing that cured him was that he had 2 teeth cut out & wasn't supposed to suck on anything. My 5.5 year old was the only one with a paci & he 'lost' that at 20 months, no problem.
You're from out by Alex huh? We just moved to Big Lake (way nothern suburbs of the Cities)....it's just off I-94, near Anoka, Elk River, etc. We had previously lived in a dinky little town about 30 minutes south of Willmar on Hwy 212. My oldest son & his dad (& family) go to Alex every January & spend a weekend at.....geez, what hotel was that again?.....Arrowood (Holiday Inn). I have an aunt/uncle that live in Alex too. My husband's family had a cabin on Lake Osakis while he was growing up. Huh...small world!

Lucy did the same...she couldn't keep it in her mouth on her own. I really wanted her to take one, but she never got used to it. Her baby brother uses one now, and she sometimes grabs it...but mostly just to chew on!

Nope neither of my girls did or will....wait do I count as a pacifier because Ava thinks I am her pacifier.
Lily never did. I think the low muscle tone makes it hard to keep in their mouth.

None of my kids had a pacifier, including Quinn. We just didn't really try it with her because we were against using them when we had the boys - so I am not sure if she would have taken it or not. She had had no feeding issues other than the stinker didn't want to breastfeed. She is just starting to sometimes put her hand in her mouth, but doesn't do that a lot - none of my kids were big thumbsuckers either.

we had the same problem with Nichole.
I wanted her to take one to exercise her mouth muscles and the sucking. However, she never took it. I am now happy because she learned to sleep with no props and she got to strengthen her mouth muscles and tongue in other ways.
We used bottles, my finger, and we tried and tried until she got nursing, nothing is harder than that!

My 3 year old never took it, she would spit it out and would get mad.
Derrin takes the paci sometimes but it falls out, the ECI people told me that having a paci was good to help with the toungue thrusting and jaw muscles....then he found his thumb, well his whole hand actually and he uses it to soothe himself and calm himself down. I guess I have to wait and see how that goes.

Benjamin was the exact same way for MONTHS and he just now started taking one for longer lengths of time. And I'm so glad b/c it's such a help! He's almost nine months old and has probably taken one since about seven or seven-and-a-half months old. He had open-heart surgery at five-and-a-half months old, but he was not in heart failure before it so I'm not sure that had anything to do with it.

Neither of my first two would take a pacifier, but I didn't try very hard at all. My second child is 6 and sucks his thumb (my daughter never did). With Leo I tried harder with the pacifier because I thought it would help with the muscle tone and for a couple months we had to hold it in for him. Now he takes it and holds it for longer but generally only when he needs to go to sleep. I'm pretty happy that he'll take it for falling asleep because it's nice that he doesn't have to nurse to sleep every time.

RAMIRO LOVES HIS CHUPEE (PACIFER) SOMETIMES WHEN HE IS REALLY TIRED HE WILL SPIT IT OUT ALOT BUT USALLY HAS NO TROUBLE. i did not know that the chupee would help with his mouth muscle tone? i had no idea. i just gave it to him cause my other two did. angelina held on to it longer (2) mia was done with it at a year old!
All three really used it to help to get to sleep.

Reese was never a huge fan of the pacifier. She would suck on it a bit and then pull it out of her mouth and wave it around in the air. It became more of a distraction than an actual soothing device which kind of defeats the purpose. I never pushed it and her ST said that it encourages tongue thrusting (although I had another ST tell me that it was good for strengthening muscles so who knows). Anyway, for me, I was glad that she never took to it.
