Well, Leo is 6mo now and I completely forgot to bring up the topic of solids at his 6mo check up. He's currently breastfed and does pretty well with that (he's 18.5lb). So I was browsing around this site and came across some posts on aspiration in the health forum and now I'm a little more concerned than I was before. Sounds like lots of our kiddos have troubles with swallowing and food. Leo's pediatrician is pretty relaxed and I think her method is to just deal with things as they appear and not worry me with what "might" happen or talk about long range things too soon. So I'm wondering if I should talk to the doc before trying solids or if I should just go ahead and give it a try. If I give it a try, should I make him something much more liquidy than I would otherwise do for a typical baby starting solids?

Hi Julia,
We started Asa on baby cereal and fruit. He loved it! There was no going back from there. The only thing that was different then normal was feeding and using a maroon spoon instead of a regular baby spoon. It's square at the tip and rather scooping the food off in his mouth our OT wanted to make sure we were pressing down on his tougue and allowing him to take the food of the spoon by bringing his tougue up and closing down..

We started solids at 6 months too - baby cereal and fruit. Jacey did great, but I actually started w/ it a little thicker than I did w/ our typical son. Jacey had no problems w/ it and took off like crazy. I'm w/ your ped - I say go for it and only worry when there is a need to... You might be surprised at how well he does!

We started Eden with cereal and fruit too and she really likes eating! She took to it right away and has had no problems so far.
One thing we're running into now (she's 9 months) is that we are trying to introduce finger foods like small noodles or other types of regular "adult" foods but just smaller and she is not taking well to the textures. She doesn't quite know what to do with a cheerio or a noodle and just makes a face like "YUCK!" and keeps sticking her tongue out like "BLAH" Any ideas on how to introduce this type of food?

Our little guy is 6 1/2 months old and we have slowly been introduing solids for a few weeks now. He is doing well with it, but still has a tough time digesting the oatmeal cereal. I would def say go with what you think is best : ) Good luck!

we just started Patrick on rice cereal, he doesn't do much with it.
Question, I've heard of some people adding rice cereal to the babys bottle, what do you guys/gals think? I'm asking because Patrick never seems to be full.
Thanks

Ryan,
Our ped told us not to put cereal in a bottle because it would cause the baby to eat way too many calories. She said it wasn't healthy. But if Patrick is constantly hungry I'm not sure what you should do. Did you talk to your ped about it?

we started Lily with rice cereal when she was 6 months old.We never had any problems with aspirating so I am not sure about that. I would give it a try, he may just spit it all out at first anyway. Lily did that for awhile.

Hi there,
I had some difficulty getting Reese to eat solids. I tried at 6 months with oatmeal and she wanted nothing to do with it. Tried her on some stage one fruits and she still wasn't interested. Tried some stage one veggies and she blew raspberries and sprayed everyone. Make a long story short, I started to panic because at 7-8 months she still wanted nothing to do with food. She wouldn't open her mouth, would throw the food at me and cry. The speech therapist gave me some techniques and told me to offer her one solid meal a day no matter what. So, I consistently offered her one meal a day even if she she threw it at me. Finally, at 8 1/2 months something clicked and she started opening her mouth and enjoying her foods. Now she eats three meals a day of stage 2 food and she will pretty much eat anything. So, I say give it a try and see if he likes it, but don't get discouraged if it takes a while for him to catch on.

So I went ahead and tried Leo on some solids. I started by making him some squash and the first time he saw the spoon coming he opened wide like he'd been eating all his life! He hardly made any mess at all. So after 3 days of squash I tried peas, then sweet potatoes and now we're working on rice cereal. He hasn't spit any of it out and seems excited when it's meal time.
By the way, it's worth reading the package on those baby cereals...I had fed my previous 2 the Heinz cereals but now I'm a little more careful about what goes into my babies and after reading the ingredient list I chose an organic cereal that doesn't have so many extras.
