Hi everyone! I've never even been on a forum before, never mind actually becoming a member, but here I am! My name is Jenita, I'm 25, and Erik, my husband of 5 years, is 28. We recently had our first child, a beautiful little boy! We did not know before he was born that he had Down syndrome, but for some reason, neither of us were shocked or upset. He was just so stinkin cute, what's not to love?!!! He was born on Nov 14, 2008 and just had an AV canal repaired last week Wednesday. He is doing great from a cardiac perspective, but he is having some difficulty with his bowel movements. They suspected he may have Hirschsprung's, but so far the tests have come back negative. We are just waiting to hear back on one last test. Hopefully it's negative too!! I love reading about everybody's families and am learning so much. I'm not sure how to post a picture yet, but will try and figure it out. [/img]

Welcome and your little man sur eis a cutie.
This is a great place to come. My little guy was born 9/21/08 with Hirschsprung's. Have they done the biopsy? Is that what your waiting for. Let us know and again welcome to the family.

His name is Blake. Thanks for all the welcomes! I've been on this site SO much in the last couple of days - I can't believe how much you can learn here as opposed to trying to read up on these things separately. Love it!!!
Oh, and they did the biopsy on Monday, and apparently they did two separate tests on the tissue. THe first test came back negative for Hirschsprungs, and we are still waiting to hear back on the second. So it sounds promising. He was on Lactulose for the last 3 days, and is having at least one bm per day so I'm thinking he's fine?! I won't be giving it today, because I think it makes him very crampy, and his stools have been very loose, so we'll see what going without does.

Hi, and welcome. Your little guy really IS a cutie. I'm lovin' that little mohawk!
Constipation (with or without Hischsprung's) is VERY common for kids with DS. If your little guy doesn't have HD, or if he does but the constipation is still bad after the pull through surgery, ask his GI about Miralax. It's a laxative that really tends to work great for our kids. Our GI wanted David to use it daily, but it turns out 2 to 3 doses (1 dose per day) is enough to clear him up for a month or two. Lots of other kids here on the group use Miralax too, some occasionally like David, and some daily, but I've never heard of any kid having a bad reaction to it.

Welcome! My name is Kim, and I and mommy to Charlie (3) who has DS, and to Calvin (1), who has the standard set of chromosomes. I too was 25 when I had Charlie, and we did not know he would have Down Syndrome. Like you, we were not bummed out for long. Charlie is some amazing. And, honestly, I think babies with DS are way cute! Glad you joined us! Be sure to ask about constipation issues in the questions forum. Lots and lots of wisdom on this board!

Welcome!
We didn't know our daughter had DS until she was born. I held her as soon as she was born and had the same reaction you had! She was soooo stinkin cute! Then they said DS and I thought someone hit me over the head with a board. I was heart broken, but I still could get over how cute she was! LOL!
You're little guy is adorable! Have fun with him.
