Our PT suggested ordering a pair of hip helpers for our 14 month old son as he sleeps with his hips splayed wide/out. He has no other problems with his hip joints, just the regular hypotonia. I've read opinions online which have said to stay away from them, whereas others think very highly of them. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I had never hear of hip helpers, but our PT gave us a mermaid stocking to use while on Paige's tummy, and we also use it while she is sleeping. It's super easy to make, just buy some lycra and sew it in a tube, taking it in as you go down her legs (just like a mermaid!) You'll want to make it long, from about belly button to ankles.
It's a lot of work for them on their tummies, so I'd start of just minutes at a time.

I like ours. They keep Eden's legs in but she can still move around with them on. Although, I gotta say we don't use them as much now that she really likes to move around a lot. I should put them on more often than I do.

Lucas wore them on and off for his first 1 1/2 years -- they were especially helpful in keeping him from doing the split which kids with DS are especially prone to do. We had three different therapists who all recommended the helpers....we think the did, in fact, help Lucas from bowing his legs. best of luck to you.

We used them for Abby when she was learning to crawl, to help her keep her in the 4 point position. She caught on quickly and we didn't end up using them for very long.

Just to ask, why do some people not recommend them? I checked out there website to find out more, but it doesn't actually say much about how they work, I guess it's obvious, but I like to know the technical stuff...

my son hated them. He refused to move when he was wearing them, all he would do is lay there and scream because they made him so angry lol. I politely returned them to the OT lol.
