Ok, so Paige has been sitting up since 7 months old, and we worked on her getting from tummy to sitting position, etc. and she has finally mastered to sit up on her own at 15 months or so.
She is a pro-star at butt scooting, and pre-"pushing up to sit", she could do a commando crawl. Now that she can do this, she pretty much refuses to be on her tummy (why would I do that when I can do this). We see PT once every 2 months (all that's available up here), and get home visits once a month. But I do work with her almost every day for a couple minutes at a time to get her in that 4 point position, which she tries to get out of to butt scoot.
I really want her to crawl as I know it's an important part of development in right-brain left-brain stuff ( I swear I can tell which of my dance kids crawled or not!!). I had a hard time for a while watching 'typical' kids her age crawl and go on to walking, but got over that and really didn't stress.. Now I wonder if she will or if she'll continue to skip and do the easiest ways to get around... She doesn't even like to "take steps' holding hands anymore, she wants to butt scoot so she hold up her legs....
I'm also wondering if the hip helpers could be impeding that progress, but if she doesn't have them then she does the splits over and over to get up and down.
Any ideas?

Both my neice and nephew never crawled, my nephew rolled all over the place to get from A to B. My neice just started taking steps out of the blue. Some kids just dont want to crawl. Give her a while to catch on about taking steps and the "bum shuffle" (I'd LOVE to see that!! lol ) days will be gone.

Ethan is almost 2 and is an ace bottom shuffler He's aslo never showed any interest in crawling and has always been very resistant to doing any activities or exercises on his tummy. I think he is soo fast and can get to wherever he needs to go through skooting around that the motivation to crawl was just never there!
Because of this we (and his therapist) are now mostly working on his standing skills (high kneeling, half kneeling to stand, free standing, exercises to strengthen his trunk and legs etc) he's doing so well and I've noticed so much progress since we changed the focus of his therapy a few months ago. It's just going to take that little bit longer for Ethan to walk!
Have to admit I'm gonna miss that little butt skoot when he starts walking

Ali doesn't really "crawl"--she does her own combination of butt scoot/butt pivot, crawl pushing off with right leg, bear crawl. It's very unconventional, but she can get wherever she wants to go! I know it's supposed to be important, but I don't think you should stress about it too much! (I'm working on worrying less about Ali not doing things the "right" way, too!)

Nate didn't want to bear weight on his hands or arms for the longest time. Mean mom here, I would not let him butt scoot. Every time he would start to scoot I would flip him down to all fours. He also did lots and lots of crawling up the stairs which made him so so strong! I would make sure he was using a reciprocal pattern and alternate what side he was using to go up first. Wheel barrow exercises are also very good! It took almost 2 months from him getting into and out of a sit on his own till he was crawling.

Elias was almost 2 when he began crawling!
the harder we pushed, the harder it was. P Winders told me at a NDSC to not PUSH , because that will lead us to frustration (to the kid and to the mom) so the moment I stoped pushing around 19m, it worker. at 21 months he was crawling, but by the time he was also cruising. and at 2 he was almost full walking.
the problem with Elias were the knees, he couldnt be on kneees, he hated! so we began doing a LOT of play while on his knees, and along with that many arm exercises (since the PT told us that his arms needed strenght), soon one day he just did it.
I do believe is important crawling, but not as much for everyone to be stressed about it

Paige is definitely more of the "hates to be on her knees" situation. I've really tried hard to just let her be and "guide" her into the positions I want her to use, etc. I think I'm mostly worried that I'm wasting all this time working on making her crawl when maybe I should be starting on the walking thing.
I know it's nothing really to be stressed about, just tired and frustrated of waiting for her "any day". And also wondering if the hip helpers are actually hindering her in the crawling, even though if she doesn't she can still do the splits.

I've never used the hip helpers, so I'm not much help there. If you can work on the side-sitting position, that may help her with the transition from sit to crawl.

Ya, she knows the side sitting thing, that's how she learnt how to transition from tummy to sitting as well, she just doesn't continue into the 4 point position, just pulls with a butt scoot!! And if I help her in the 4 point, she just splails onto her tummy in a "nope, not doing that" fashion! I do lots with her over my leg, but even that, she stretches and fights to push back into sit.

It sounds like she's just going to do it on her own time schedule For a long time I was so concerned about Ali crawling and always trying to get her into the four-point position, but then I just decided to not worry about it and let her do her own thing. I also started thinking about all the things she was going to be tearing up when she could move around so much more!

What your describing is EXACTLY how Evelyn used to be. She is almost 2 now and walking on her own, not all of the time (as I would love) but a lot of the time. I used to stress and stress and stress over her crawling... or not crawling for that matter. When she was about 16 months, we started working a lot on getting up the stairs. Since she was so strong but still refused to get on hands and knees or crawl, it really, really helped. We also put sofa cushions on the floor and motivated her with food and toys to try and climb onto the cushion. There is only one way to do it, and its by using hands and knees Within a month she started army crawling (she always but scooted) and then randomly one day started to crawl on hands and knees. She still crawls... REALLY FAST now and also is walking. Dont worry, it sounds like it is more of a case of stubborn-ness than anything else. She will do it on her own time. I think that by pushing Evie onto hands and knees for so long with a fight, it may have actually delayed her reaching that skill... because she always FIGHTS me even harder when she doesnt want to do something

Hee hee! Thanks! I forgot about this post! We had a visit with the PT (after 4 months!) and she was super excited with Paige's progress and agreed with me that she probably won't crawl, not for lack of strength but out of her own stubborness and that she likes to butt scoot. So we are officially moving on in our goals, which is pull to stand (already pulls to her knees easily) and cruising along furniture (which she took 3 side steps on Sunday!) Ya!
It's funny to look back at old posts and remember how frustrated I was and how now, like everyone said, it really didn't matter in the long run (and it's only been a few months since!!)
