Hi everyone. I have a weird question to ask. Is it normal not to have gas or pass gas? I'm asking because Austin NEVER farts. I mean never. I thought that passing gas or getting gas was a part of life. Everyone does it..right? He burps ok, but when it comes to gass at the lower end, he just doesn't. Just wondering if this is command.
There are times when his belly will get bloated and I'll use the cath to help release some of it, but he just doesn't pass it himself. We go to the doc's Tuesday to once again beg for a GI doc and I'm going to say something about it. Al and I will be looking for a new ped if she still won't go over the surgeon's head. This is a whole other story...ugh....but anyway, just wanted to know if not passing gas is normal. Thanks.

Sorry no help here. My Daniel thinks it's the funniest thing to pass gas and finds it amusing to announce it to EVERYONE when he does it. Occassionally he'll lift up his leg to show you if you don't hear it with your ears!!

Oh that is to funny. He needs to come over and teach Austin how to do it. Not that I want Austin farting all the time, but I am concerned because I have never heard so smelled him pass gas.

His bowel problem could be stopping him from farting. If he has a blockage then no wind can get down. I know when Ben is constipated he stops farting too.

It's not weird - at least not around here, ok?
I think it's a legitimate concern, and your ped should not dismiss it.

Mark does get gas, but it is very infrequent and with much difficulty and crying compared to when my other kids were his age. He doesn't burp too much either. Austin has never been seen by a GI? I thought you might be going to Cleveland or Boston to get him checked? Your ped should admit when things are beyond his/her expertise!

This has been a big fight to get us into see the GI. Austin's surgeon feels that a GI will be a waste of time....we feel differently. We want in. The surgeon at one point said he was going to either send us to Ciny or Boston, but because the biopsy came back ok, he has now changed his mind. I'm going Tuesday to speek with the ped once again and if she won't refur us, then we are looking for a new ped. The last time I talked with her, she said she didn't want to go over Dr R's head to get us into a GI. We love our surgeon, but he just isn't seeing how we want that second opinion. One thing that gets us is that he's leaving this spring...why won't he get us in now before he leaves? This whole issue really just boils me to the max. No one is listening to us for the needs of Austin.

That is just crazy - do they have a plan for Austin now that his biopsy came back negative? More tests? They have to do something - poor guy - nothing makes Mark more miserable than constipation and it makes his acid reflux that much worse plus lots of vomiting. Does Austin have acid reflux or vomiting issues - when Mark's constipation was at it's worse Mark was vomiting 2-3 times per day. I know you said you tried the miralax - have they suggested anything else? Keep after the doctors - don't let them brush you off - don't feel bad about changing peds. I've often thought of going to one of these down syndrome clinics where they specialize in ds dx. I googled it and they are all throughout the country.

The plan for now is just Little Tummys laxative everyday and enemas. The laxatives don't even work any more so it's an enema every afternoon. If we skip a day he gets really sick to where he throw-up like what you said happens to Mark. I just want that second opinion and the doc looks at me like I have 3 eyes and how dare I not trust him. UGH.

I definitely don't think it's normal to not pass gas. I think it's essential! Are you sure he doesn't? No silent ones? I assume they aren't SBDs (silent but deadly) or you'd know. (LOL!) But seriously, no, I don't think that's okay. Not at all.

Yeah, I'd say it's not normal, to not pass gas either. I know, after you have a baby (at least, after my csection) they kept pestering me and asking if I was able to. They wanted to make sure everything was working right.

So sorry you and poor Austin have to deal with this. It definitely doesn't sound normal to me. Hope you get the doctor thing straightened out--it must be SO frustrating!

I hope you can find a ped that listens to your concerns and you get the GI referral you need! ( and little Austin can get that tummy sorted!!)
Ethan is a real little trumper and has started lifting a butt cheek just before he passes gas

Now THAT is a joy, I think only a few of us parents will understand. Seriously, they don't get what's wrong, but they still won't refer? How bad do they want it to get? I think you shoud phone every day when Austin doesn't go by himself, and when he doesn't go with the Tummy and then go do the enema there every day...maybe THEN they will get the picture and see what you mean.
Pray that your ped listens!!!

I'll join the crowd that says "not normal" for not passing gas. Leo passes gas but a lot of times I only know it if I'm holding him and can feel it on my hand. Once in a while it's loud enough to hear but even then it's a soft "put put put" as opposed to the stuff my other kids put out. And he has discomfort when he does it.
So sorry to hear of your doctor troubles. I really hope you can get a referral, it sounds like it would be very worthwhile. We actually haven't seen a GI specialist either...just the ped and the surgeon. I wonder if that is something we should look into...
Take care and give Austin a hi 5 from Leo!

I'm surprised your doctor isn't concerned about Austin needing an enema every day to have a bm. THAT'S not normal either. What are these doctors thinking? What advice have your doctors given you to help this little guy go?
When Melissa had trouble with BM's it was due to celiac. She would have diarrhea , yucky yellow puffy poop, for a few months and then have horrible constipation for a few months. It was nerve wracking.
I'd keep pushing for a doctor who can help you and your little guy.

The doc keeps telling us that it's ok to have enemas everyday. And they have him on a non-constipating diet. All the kid eats is fruits and veggies, and he still can't go. We are going to a GI March 26th. I'm hoping this new doc will beable to help him.

Sometimes I wonder about Dr's....
How is an enema everyday in any way good for him? Noah (when we were having all his health troubles) would maybe go once per week and his stool was horrible smelling. I mean I can handle baby poop, but this wasn't baby poop, it was just rotten. My dr had said that it was because when he was passing it was OLD stool...so basically, his digestive track literally filled to the brim with poop so some had to come out, and always in small amounts and by that time it was so old it was horrid. My dr used to be a pharmacist so he had prescribed ratio* Lactulose (it's what it's called in Canada) which is supposed to more or less liquify the contents of the bowel to make it easier to pass. It worked, but once we switched his diet to pediasure because of the Celiac, the constipation resolved itself.
I really don't think it's not normal to never fart either, and I think switching peds might be a good idea, because you know something is wrong, and yours isn't listening.
