Hi All!
First time posting the the "Five Plus" forum. And appropriately, my question has to do with clothing to fit my pudgy little "plus-size" pumpkin.
I have found that 3/4 length sleeve shirts fit almost right for her arm length. But what do I do about the pants?
She has quite the tummy but short legs, so plus sizes don't always work because if it fits the tummy, then the pants are way too long. I have had pants hemmed but it really adds to the cost of the pants!
What have you mommies found (and where) to fit and BE FASHIONABLE for our little pumpkins?

I have boys...... and the opposite problem....... to skinny and mostly all the walmart clothes (even the slims) fall off! They seem to make the boys pants much bigger that the girls in same size (start early at this size discrepancy...... but I would try some of the plus size boys jeans there.....)
But Miranda has that buddah belly and we have been getting the leggins and I just add another seam and the surge them........ so make them the correct size and those footles tights and longer shirts and dresses!

I have the same problem My Mazie is 6 and we have a very hard time finding clothes to fit I have found capri's are good they end up being about the right length to wear as long pants. In the summer we do alot of gymboree bike shorts and the longer tops. Also if you have a nordstroms near you they do hem for free. We also have a problem with shoes she has such a wide foot. My oldest daughter got married in Sept and Mazie was the flower girt and we could not find any dress shoes or sandles to fit her, she went down the asile bearfoot... lucky it was an out door beach wedding..LOL for shoes she wears keens or crocks so if anyone out there has any other brands let me know

This is a battle I have been fighting for a very long time! I think someone could become a millionaire if they would only make clothes to fit our kids! Bailey wears a lot of leggings, and some jeans with an elastic waist. It is so nice that long, tunic-style shirts are in style right now - they help to cover up the "droopy drawer" syndrome that she always seems to have - no matter what kind of pants I put on her. When she was younger, she wore a lot of bib overalls. You could buy them bigger around, and the straps would hold them up. Sometimes they can be difficult for kids to manage by themselves, though. Going to the bathroom was sometimes a 2 person job.
Hemming is an ongoing activity. I hem, and often taper, the legs of a good share of Bailey's pants. The leggings are nice, though, because you can bunch a lot of extra material at the ankle without having to actually shorten them - at least if the pant leg is narrow enough at the ankle to not let it slide down over the shoe or foot. I used to buy leggings at Wal-mart and Target. Now that she is older, and actually in adult plus sizes, it has become a new version of the old battle, but I'm finding new places like Woman Within, Roaman's, Just My Size.com, and some Wal-marts carry plus size leggings, too, but that's a way down the road for you yet!

We have the problem with both length, waste and fasteners. Angela needs clothes that she can be completely independent with at school and at her dads. And, when your daughter hits puberty, they get curvy!!!! Yeah, we very quickly discovered that clothes that were technically her size, don't fit her curves. (she has the DS bubble butt, big time!)
I shop in the women's petite section for Angela! She wears a size 6 women's short petite. (used to wear an 8, but has recently lost some weight. ) The Croft and Barrow "short petite" size fits Angela's length EXACTLY! They also come in regular petite, which is still shorter than average length jeans. Oh, and Angela has a 28 inch inseam And, they're elastic waisted, which is great for her. And, they are more generous in the seat and thighs to cover all those curves, and a higher rise to cover the buddah belly.
http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/womens/brandspetites/croftbarrow/PRD~361496/Croft+and+Barrow+Jeans.jsp
I do put embelishments on them so they look a little more stylish. But really, if they FIT I don't really care as long as she can get in/out of them herself at school! LOL
When I DO want style (like when we're going out, or she has an event to go to) I also get her regular jeans and have them altered. Seriously, they take like 14 inches off the length! LOL Then I have them put darts in the back to solve the plumber butt issue, and SUPER strong velcro in place of the button/zipper, because Angela can't do fasteners. It costs me about $30 to have one pair of jeans done, but I'm having quite a bit done to them.
I won't put Angela in leggings. I try to pay attention to what the other girls in her school are wearing and NOBODY is wearing leggings in the middle school here in MN. Granted, Angela isn't necessarily wearing what everyone else wears all the time, (she's such a tomboy, and prefers rugby shirts. LOL)
For shoes, Angela has the smallest feet EVER! They don't even fit her body! LOL She wears a size 1!!! So our difficulty with shoes has to do with finding shoes that don't have little kid stuff on them, yet are not just plain white, and that she likes! We can usually find them at payless or something, but it does take some effort.
Now, I've just realized I've edited this post about 12 times because I keep remembering details! LOL

I'm with Jane. Austin is a bean pole. He needs a 3T pant but they are WAY too short. Even with the tabs, he shows a lot of plumber crack. IT's embarrassing. lol
And my husband refuses to send him to school in warm up pants.. he thinks its just wrong. lol

Oh yes, I'm with your husband Amy...no sweat pants/warm up pants for my Daniel ever.
As far as clothes, we must have adjustable waist so we can get the length we need, but can tighten the waist up. I typically buy Old Navy since they are a little less expensive and he can be really tough on his clothes.

What's wrong with sweats? Angela pants (The ones I linked to above) are really no different than sweats. They're just made of denim.
I hate to tell you, but the "no sweat pants" comments may come back to haunt you. I know, I used to say them. If your kid hits an age where they can't do fasteners, but you can't find elastic waist pants, the only option is sweats, or having pants altered to elastic waist. Angela wears A LOT of sweats! Thankfully "yoga pants" are in right now here.
Kinda makes those of us who's kids DO have to wear stuff like sweats feel bad, because we really don't have a lot of choices when our kids can't do fasteners, but they need independence at school.
You do what you gotta do as a parent so your kid doesn't have to drag a teacher to the bathroom with them in the 7th grade.
The condescending comments about kids wearing sweats are, in my opinion, no different that short bus jokes.

I have found that only GAP jeans seem to fit Joey in the waist and length. He's 5 almost 6 wearing size 5 jeans. The length fits and they have adjustable waist that I can adjust to his belly. Other jeans - Old Navy - either too small or next size too big, Children's place too tight in belly, but GAP - perfect, so I end up paying $20 or more for one pair of jeans!!! Since he is potty training I try to put windpants (or track pants) on him (I prefer these over sweatpants). But he is obsessed with wearing jeans to school so......
I know with my older son we were able to adjust the waist on the jeans tight enough to stay up yet big enough to pull up and down without undoing. Adjustable waist turns jeans into elastic waist when you have to adjust quite a bit Children's Place also makes khakis (in a variety of colors) with elastic waist.
For a girl I would try to go with the leggings with the oversized tops, that seems to be the fad here in CT. If they are a bit long you could always bunch them at the bottom and/or roll the waist. The little girls also wear lots of dresses with or without tights but ALWAYS with biker shorts underneath.

I thought I would never do the sweats thing either....... but Devon trying to do anything......sweat and velcro are his only option........
I have been putting velco in the pants and sewing the button on so it looks the same....... I als got a bunch of velcro belts and we just skip the the button all to gether and they pull down / fall off his bottom most of the time.
We use sweats as our "messed up" at school pants most times.....cause with the one boy in underwear and the other starting with non side opening diapers...... to change them they have to take the pants off....the underwear....and shoes and orthotics..... I sort of feel sorry for his teachers and it can turnn into a 30 minute potty trip or longer if Colin does it all by himself....which he likes to do!
Right now I am putting a BLADDER PAD inside Devon's goodnights so they can change it once or twice unless he poops...... without totally taking off and on his clothes!
And in regards to other "typicals" at the school...... they were all in walmart or target or Old navy matching sweat outfits this fall! (So we have been concentrating on cool tops/ sweaters and shirts and what ever they can get on and off the bottom)

We have the same problem with Samantha. She has a huge belly and short stubby legs. I did find nice jeans at Target recently with elastic waistbands. But other than that it's leggings and oversized shirts or a dress and leggings. I do not sew at all so hemming is not an option for me.

Angie, I don't sew either. I bring them to a guy to have them done. For $30 he will do everything I need! (shorten/hem, take out zipper and replace with velcro, and put darts on the back of the waste, or elastic if we determine that's what they need.) For just hemming I think It's $10.

We do leggings, stretch pants.....anything that has elastic waist. I have not been able to find a pair of jeans that will stay up on her.

My little guy has the same problem. We or I should say I hem all his pants. I can never just buy something off the rack and it fit. Also some brands run bigger too. This year for school I bought all jogging pants. He has some nike ones and some that we got at pennies and he wears them to school. Something about the way denium rubs his skin really bothers him. Sorry not much help!

Talitha mainly lives in sweat pants (we call them trakkies or tracksuit pants) during winter but I found some jeans that have an adjustable waist so she has 3 pairs of them. My friend is a plus size but very short and buys the pants that are supposed to be just below the knee and they fit her perfectly as long pants.
All our school uniforms are trakkies and a polo shirt so there is no stigma attached to wearing them here. Personally I love them coz they are so comfortable.
Shoes are a problem - she lives in crocs (not the expensive brand). I don't know what we are going to do in winter. Last winter we got through with crocs with socks and gumboots. Her foot is way too wide for any sandals or normal shoes. Just praying we get our move up north then it won't get cold enough to worry.

Gyboree has husky pants....you usually have to order them online but sometimes you can find them in the stores and the outlets. They still have the tabs. Technically Russell is skinny but since he filled out some in the middle, I like getting the Gymboree huskies with the tabs so he can get a couple years sometimes out of them. I find Gymboree's pants hold up well so even though they can be expensive, they last much longer then other brands for us. I will hit the stores or outlets every so often for the clearance stuff and find stuff and get it that way. I usually don't pay full pop for his clothes there. My MIL helps me get him clothes there.
I am SO not a sweats to school kinda girl for Russell... LOL..but some of the trackpants aren't bad and once in a while he goes in them...but usually he wears his cool boy jeans and t'shirts. Sweats are usually for home.

Hi
So Eliza will be 5 in 3 months so i guess i can post I have had good luck finding her clothes at Hanna Anderrson and Old Navy. They hae lots of capri and cropped pants that fit like regular pants and 3/4" sleeve shirts. I buy her these roll up jeans and khakis http://www.hannaandersson.com/style.asp?from=SC%7C10%7C2%7C24%7C27%7C5%7C%7C
I see they have roll up cargos for boys too. Their clothes cost more but they wash incredibly well and if you hand down they will still be in really good shape for the next kid.

Wow..you guys are awesome with all your tips and places to check out. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.
Grace (almost 10 w/Ds) wants to look like "Alex Russo" and "Hannah/Miley" but we can't find those clothes that look like that too easily. Yikes am I going to be in trouble when she's a teenager, I'm thinking!
My oldest daughter isn't even as picky as Grace and still lets me do the shopping for her. I would never have guessed that Grace was going to be my fashionista!

I completely agree that I may change my mind someday out of neccessity. However, I disagree with comparision to a short bus joke. I don't go out in sweats, nor does my typical daughter....so for now, neither does Daniel. But, you make a good point that in 7th grade that may be neccessary (and probable since his fine motor is very poor).
I apologize if my statement was inconsiderate....I never meant to hurt anyone's feelings (especially my friends Leah and Angela).

Um Yeah. My husband doesn't think it's a 'stereotype' of people with DS to wear sweats. He's old fashioned. He thinks sweats are for the gym. Period. He hates for me to wear sweat pants. I'm talking the elastic in the waist and ankle sweat pants by Hanes. Yoga pants, and leggings are different. But they are for GIRLS. I bought Austin two pairs of sweats and little shirts to match. Got him dressed for school, thinking they'd keep him warm. Nope. I had to change his pants to jeans. It's my hubby's deal. Not mine. lol And he would be just as upset with me for letting Hunter go out anywhere in sweats ... except for Soccer practice. *shrugs* Just him.

In my personal experience with Jeffery, he wears a mens size medium ( he's signifigantly overwieght but thats not the issue here) We usualy have to hem all his pants, or if I buy shorts that are designed to fall below the knee, then come to just bairly above his ankles . . . don't know if thats much help for anyone who doesn't live in a warm climate much of the year as we do . . . . but thoughing it out there anyways, might help

thats my thought lol . . . I don't have ready access to a sewing machine and it's a pain when I have to get my friend or my mom to alter his pants, and considering we live in Florida, most of the time it doesn't realy matter . . .although this crazy cold front made it nessisary to buy him some new sweats this year usualy shorts do it

Becka and I always have this battle when we go shopping. Nothing ever seems short enough! I have been super careful with her weight and teaching her healthy eating habits, so she doesn't have a weight issue, but even so, it seems like everything is too darn long. I can sew, so this is not a huge problem, but Becka and I always happen upon the rack of those awesome flares! Or the pants with the embroidery along the hems! We end up standing there mourning the fact that we can't wear them ( I am vertically challenged also )
So, I took the initiative!
We headed to Beverly's (our local craft store) and we picked out some great patches and buttons and we have a "bedazzle!" day after I finish hemming! So much fun! It's relatively cheap and she gets to make unique works of art that have all of the other parents asking where we found them.
Lemonade from lemons, right?
Also, Leah, go to shoes.com you will find the coolest (non-kiddy) size one's. Angela will flip!

Nate just has the short legs right now...he outgrew in the waste his 3T jeans which were a "perfect" length. He is almost 39 pounds and had to move up to a 4/4T. I found some great elastic waist capri (rollup pants) at Children's Place and the elastic waist spring/summer pants at Lands end...which look adorable on him and he can pull up and down for toileting. Since he too cannot do fastners and I want him to have success with potty training I have had to look for the elastic waste pants. Jeans that have fit him the best are Kohl's Sonoma brand. In the picture below he is in the Geranimals sweat pants...dirt cheap at Walmart and needs to wear the 5T now...(they shrink).

| This is a battle I have been fighting for a very long time! I think someone could become a millionaire if they would only make clothes to fit our kids! |
Oh, my gosh, I agree completely! I've always thought that someone who wanted to work from home and had sewing abilities could make a fortune if they focused on these needs.
We love the Target Circo Convertible Pants. They have elastic waists and a button to keep rolls up to capri length. They come in jean sizes or colors, and they only cost ten bucks.
We also got some denim leggings at Justice for Girls which are adorable - they fit like leggings but look like jeans. She has a couple of their skinny jeans too; we bought them in slightly bigger sizes and rolled up the legs, but we now see they have half sizes (ie. 8 1/2 is equivalent to a 12 waist and 8 length). She's got a bunch of the metallic lace camis too, which are awesome - they hug her hips and eliminate plumber crack. Justice is her favorite clothing store; she looooves shopping there, and it fits her well, so we tend to buy a lot of stuff there.
For the most part, she wears a lot of long tops and leggings, though now that she's lost so much weight, she wears a lot of skinny jeans now. She still has problems with snaps though, so I may look into alterations, Leah. I'm glad you said that!

You know, Angela LOVES Justice (so do I!) but got too thick for them a couple of years ago. I bet she would wear them well again now!

Me too! Cassie especially likes their shirts with butterflies, or the really brightly colored peace ones. It can get expensive, but if you shop right, you can get cash back for purchases, and they'll send you 40% off coupons.
I hate that Cassie's lost so much weight so quickly, but I do agree with you - it will be easier to buy cute summer clothes. I will say, though, that one of the things I've always loved about Justice is that they have some billowy baby doll type tops that, when paired with leggings or biker shorts, worked really well when Cassie was a little heftier.
It's funny how kids are with clothes. Cassie really wants those faux punk pink/black clothes with the skulls on it, but I'm not sure I'm ready for my 11 year old to wear them yet. DH is secretly loving it and is just waiting for me to give the okay.
Becka's mom, I missed the bedazzle idea. I love that! Cass loves crafts and I bet she'd have a heck of a time adding accents to her clothes. What a great way to turn hemming into a positive!

Oh, see we are bikers, so Angela has LOTS of stuff with skulls on it. She has several shirts she can ONLY wear to biker events because it's the only place they are...ehem...appropriate. One of them, it's very fortunate she can't read it, and thankfully the writing is on the BACK! But it's adorable. (in a biker kid attire sort of way)

Oh, my husband would be so jealous, Leah! He loves all that stuff, and is so excited that's in the stores now, but I keep pushing to wait until she at least hits middle school.
That's too funny about the writing on the back of Angela's shirt. I bet that does look really cute.
