This has nothing to do with Austin or Down Syndrome related, but it is kid related. This morning Logan came to me and said, Chelsea wants to know what time it is. I told her to tell Chelsea that it's 15 after 7. To my surprise Logan comes back in and said, Chelsea doesn't know what that means. I was confused at what she was saying, so I went into the girls room. Asked Chelsea, what do you mean by you don't know what 15 after 7 means. I just stared at her and said, ok it's quarter after 7. She looks at me this this lost look and tells me she doesn't know what that means either.

Ok so at this time I'm floored. My 15 year old does not know how to tell time. So she goes into the kitchen and looks at the microwave and said it's 7:15. I said yes that's the same as 15 after 7 or quarter after 7. She tried to argue with me that it wasn't. I then went and got Connor 12 and Brandon 17 and asked them. They too didn't have any idea how to tell time other than looking at the microwave.

Wow, do the school not teach these kids how to tell time with a face clock these days. This is just shocking to me. Looks like I'm going to hide all the digital clocks and get all face clocks and re-teach these older kids. I'm just in total shock Shocked that I did not know this. Confused

WOW. I remember learning time on face clock pictures! I am surprised they are taught how to add/subract/multiply/divide- I mean, a calculator does that!

They teach kids to tell time on analog clocks, and most schools have regular analog clocks in them, but rarely do kids pay attention to them. They come and go according to the bells which tell them it's time to move from class to class.

I would talk to your kids' school, and let them know that NONE of your kids know how to tell time!!!!!!!!! HELLO!!!!! Something is wrong with that picture!

I would want to challenge school to test the kids in their homerooms or something to see how many of them can actually tell time! LOL

Thats amazing! Seem such a basic thing to be able to tell time from the clock! Growing up we didn't have digital displays!
Do they not wear analog wrist watches?
That would worry me....a lot!

If we look around, every where we turn the time is all digital. Cell phones, bank clocks, cable boxes, microwaves, ovens, Alarm clocks with built in radios kids seem to think they need, iPods and so on. Seems like the times have for the most part done away with analog clocks. I know like the iPods and cells you can set it to analog, but what kid would. To much brain work to look at it in that form.

Leah, I think I just may challenge the school. I bet we would all be shocked at the results too.

Maureen, let me know how your kids do. I never thought in a million years that telling time would be an issue.

And to be honest, I haven't seen a faced wrist watches in a very long time. This might be a good Christmas gift to look into these teens of mine that have no clue what time it is. Wink

I heard about a study many years ago that said kids who only tell time digitally have a harder time understanding about chunks of time. In other words, they can't visualize 15 minutes as a chunk of time on the clock and find time management more difficult. I went out and bought a nice big clock to make sure my kids could tell time the old fashioned way. It definitely took longer for my older kids to learn it than it did for me as a kid, but they do know it now.

Yes, it took my 17 yr old many years beyond when it should have to tell time with an analog clock to tell time. I remember her being in Middle School and not being able to tell it well or it took a while for her to figure it out. She did learn in early elementary school like all kids, but she didn't wany anything to do with working and figuring it out, so she always relied on the digital. Really annoying! LOL

Reece is 9 and she knows how to tell time with an analog clock just fine. She figured it out and can do it.....

Our schol DOES teach time-telling with a *face* clock. One of my kids is in 2nd grade and I KNOW they spent a good portion of time learning it last year in 1st grade, but I don't remember if they did in Kindergarten.

Most of our clocks in the house are digital but I made sure to have 2 that aren't, and put them in the rooms that are used most often (kitchen & living room). When I ask one of the kids what time it is I tell them specifically to go to the kitchen clock & look.....and I know if they do or not because they always take extra long to get back to me vs. if they looked at a digital. I'm glad you brought this up....cause my daughter just turned 8 and I want to make sure she understands how to really tell time (not just look at a digital clock).

You've peaked my curosity....my daughter is sleeping now, but I am dying to ask her if she knows how to really tell time.

My kids' schools taught it in around 1st or 2nd grade, but it took Cassie a really long time to "get it", so I kept working with her on it until she finally did at about 10 years old.

I had to teach my kids how to read an analog clock. They did learn early on in school but lack of practice meant that by about year 4 & 6 (aged 9 & 11) they couldn't tell time that way so I re-taught them.

Even mathematical concepts are dropping as kids use calculators more and more. There is a big trend worldwide towards not letting kids 'feel bad about themselves' by getting things wrong but it is meaning that kids are finishing school without being able to read, write or do day to day maths.

I asked Hannah. aged 12 about this last night....she can tell the time from an analog clock in our kitchen....thanks for bringing this up.
I don't remember any homework with the digital clock but I do remember homework with an analog one!

Ok, so those who have older kids (12 and up?) who are able to tell time on an analog clock, are the able to do it on a clock with Roman numerals? Or one that has just a line and not actual numbers? They should be able to do it by visualizing the numbers and not having to actually see the numbers on the clock.

That is too funny! I never thought about that. It's probably going to be one of those things our grandkids won't believe we even had. It's like before there were telephones or before there was tv. Thanks for sharing Smile

After reading this thread, I realized I don't have a single analog clock in my house. The kids are not ready for telling time yet, but I should probably get a real clock.

Good question...I'd say for my oldest her answer would be "I don't really care" LMAO! Reece is wired differently, she would be able to tell the difference.

It's funny from my perspective and having two girls, one who is strong in math and concepts and one who isn't..the one who is stronger in math and concepts can tell time better and can also judge (do the math in head) how long something is going to take or figure out how she has for something even if on a digital and projecting. She picked up telling time easily. The one weaker in math skills is still good in math but over all, I think this hurt her to truly understand.....it was too much work, ergo, she used the digital.

Shane doesn't understand when I tell him it it quarter till 7 or even 15 minutes till or after 7. It is very frustrating. I told him that a quarter doesn't mean 25 all the time. It means it is one fourth of a whole number.
Sam works on telling time using a analog clock at his school, I see the papers he brings home showing he knows how to tell time. I don't recall if Shane ever did this when he was younger or not. If they did, it was not reinforced and he has forgotten. We do have 2 anolog clocks and one with roman numerals, but he always looks at the microwave to tell time.

My kids from the 9 year old up have no trouble telling time on our analog clock with Roman numerals nor the one with Arabic (not the our normal Hindu-arabic) numerals.

I told the Dean of the elementary school where Logan and Cody go and he went into the morning program ready to test the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. Guess what? More than half of them failed. They will be turning a part of morning program into a telling time, time. He came up to me after and was just as shocked as I was. He said that with everything the teachers have to teach these days, the times part of their lesson is cut short and then never think they need to do review for it. He said that, that will change in his school. Very Happy

Finn is in 2nd grade. Guess what his homework was tonight...and last night...and the few nights before that?! Telling time. He caught on right away but my 9 year old took a little more practice to figure it out. I went out and bought a super cheap clock for the kitchen wall when she started. That reallt helped:)
