Hello there. It is with total excitiment that I write this introduction of our family to yours. In October, we were blessed with little Charlie...three weeks early. His story is certainly unique as my husband and I had no idea he would come so soon. His big sisters were each only a week early. Unfortunately, Charlie's birthday was also the same day that my husband, Dan, found out that all flights out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he had been on a hunting trip with his Dad and brother, were canceled because of weather issues. That evening, when I called to let him know that I was in labor and going to the hospital, Dan, his dad and his brother immediately began searching for other ways to get home as their rescheduled flight would not leave until the next morning.
Dan and his Dad and brother were successful in finding an alternative way to get home and were quickly in route. As Dan's plane touched down at OSU Airport, Charlie was coming into the world. Dan only missed the birth by 20 minutes and was still able to announce, "It's a boy!" to our family who had been waiting in the Family Waiting Area. It was such a great family moment to have everyone together to celebrate Charlie!
That night, however, a NICU doctor came in to my room to tell Dan and I of some concerns they had for Charlie's health. They said he seemed to be having respiratory issues and that they were hearing a murmer in his heart that may indicate a heart defect. In addition, they were seeing characteristics that were consistent with Down Syndrome. She said they were taking him to the NICU to treat him and run some tests. Over the next few days Charlie improved considerably. The doctor's ruled out any respiratory issues and found that he had no heart defect. We were incredibly relieved. A few days later, it was confirmed that Charlie has Down Syndrome.
Though it was certainly a shock and an adjustment to learn of Charlie's diagnosis, we have embraced it. Our family has taken on this new challenge with excitement and passion. We are dedicated to giving all three of our children the best care possible and that is why I'm so excited to be here. I want to learn all I can from you!

Hello and WELCOME to Downsyn Jen!! I'm so glad you found us. This group has been a God-send for so many in terms of offering support, encouragement and advice to those of us who come here...new to a life-altering diagnosis....scared, devastated, confused, angry....you name it. The ladies and gents on this forum are amazing and you are a most welcome addition. Congratulations on the birth of your Charlie. I'm looking forward to getting to know you and your family better. It sounds like you are already in a good place and I'm so glad. Eden is the absolute joy of our lives and I'm sure Charlie will be (already is) the same to you.
God bless,
