My little guy who will be 4 next weekend has been a bit "off" recently. He's had a runny nose for about two months, nothing excessive just there, and no coughing. That really hasn't got me worried. But recently he has been much more sleepy and unfocused at times. No fever at all.. I don't suspect a virus even though he's had a runny nose.. He is typically very active and go go go from morning till night. But recently he has been falling asleep. On Friday when picking him up from nursery school his worker mentioned that he was not himself for the past half hour and that he seemed like he wanted to cry Sad He then Fell asleep at home at around 3, and was out for the rest of the night!

I will be bringing him in tomorrow for blood work to check his thyroid. My question is should I be checking for something else too? Any ideas what else may be the cause of the extra sleepiness? Typically the only thing that slows this boy down is a high fever, so to see him slow down without a fever is a bit worrying!

Hmmm sounds a lot like allergies, especially this year that has been so goofy in many parts of the US and Canada!

check his iron levels. low iron may cause tiredness and sleepiness. As for runny nose, allergies?

Vit D also. Vit D deficiency is the source behind Asher sleeping all the time.

If the bloodwork comes back normal, try an anti-histamine for allergies. This season hasn't been bothering my son YET. However, I always have benadryl in case of "emergency" and claritin in case his allergies are bothering him all day. Usually he's OK unless there is pollen floating in the air, or when he touches grass and then his eyes. Thankfully at 10, he has learned not to touch his face when he's playing outside....it equals big fat swollen eyes, hence, the benadryl we keep on hand lol.

Yes, the blood work should clue you in if there is something wrong. Hope he starts feeling better soon!
