Any suggestions for a response to this? "however as teachers, our focus must be primarily on his social and academic growth.". This is from Grant's kindergarten teacher in part of our discussion regarding potty training, which is a goal in his IEP. He is included in the regular classroom with a one on one aide, and they are not very willing to work on the ideas I suggest, or provide any valuable suggestions. Grrr... Thanks!

we have goals...... for devon....... about pulling up his clothes and other things like hand washing and that...... I will look for you in a few

yes I see the point, but they get sticklers about the educational value and other things if he is not in a "life skills program"

Matthew has had a potty training goal in his IEP...BUT he was in a life skills class. Personally, I am not sure potty training is an appropriate goal for a child who is fully included. Accomodations should definitely be provided, but potty training is not part of the general curriculum.

Robyn - I would think the one-on-one aide would and should be able to work on this. It is his or her job to work directly with your child. I would think they would prefer this to changing diapers.

Sean's one on one aide, in a fully included class, is what actually got him started on potty training. It is easier there because there is so much routine and she is able to concentrate on him where at home I have more than one child and a house to run. She started by taking him every 90 minutes. They would sing songs while he was on the toilet and she had a neat light that made colors go all over the room and different things like that to motivate him. When she started I started at home and between the two of us it worked though it still took another 3 years to be completely trained at home. He was actually trained at school first. It was an IEP goal. It comes under an OT goal. They are just looking for excuses or none of our kids would be able to go to school. Some kids are never fully trained. Do they not deserve an education? Ask them that.

Um, the I in IEP is "individual." IMHO, one can split educational hairs whether or not it's the responsibility of the aide, but I'd sure want the support of everyone on the team. Pickin' the white outta the chickensh*t isn't going to get the job done.

Mainstreamed or not, he has a one to one aide, and his teacher needs a lesson on inclusion. The IEP is there because your child has special needs, and it's not up to the teacher to do the potty training, it's up to his ONE TO ONE AIDE who is there and employed because HE NEEDS HER. When Noah has any sort of concept of the potty and all that, it'll be in his IEP too, and they'll have to follow it.

Thanks everybody, I really appreciate your responses. I pushed back, and have talked to the school today. It sounds like they will try to make some adjustments to move forward. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Not being potty trained GREATLY impacts their social and academic growth. There is NO reason why they don't work on potty training, as indicated in your IEP. Is your goal specific enough?

Janet, I will definitely plan to make his goal more specific at his upcoming IEP meeting. Thanks for the idea. I did point out the longer it is before he is trained, the longer it takes away from the classroom activities. They are working with him now, so we will see how it goes!

"Education is supposed to be about social and academic goals."

"And skills required for that. He needs to be potty trained. We're doing it at home, but we need it to be consistent."

"But we have a different focus. This is a school."

"I understand that this is a school, but he needs to be potty trained. We're putting it in the IEP."

"I don't think that would be appropriate."

"Perhaps not, but whatever we would like to think, he still needs to be potty trained. We'll keep doing it at home, and it has to happen here too."

That is, no particular emotion, no attempt to convince the unconvinceable, just: this is the way it has to be.

(I exaggerated somewhat. Initially, I'd say, make the case. Be sure your case is reasonable -- is it their job? Do they have the personnel to help with that? But then, if they keep giving static: broken record.)

Potty training was one of the goals on Kaylas IEP last year. It wasn't reached but it is still something they were working on with her. They would take her into the bathroom with other kids and have her sit on the potty. I just wished she would show some desire of wanting to use the potty
