Lately Ali's favorite hobby (besides watching Elmo) is hiding things. Remotes, toys, flash cards, papers, anything she can get down between couch cushions or throw behind the couch or bed (or somewhere even less accessible Shocked). Anyone else ever have this problem? Ideas for curbing or redirecting this behavior?

LOL!!! Same here.

We're missing a few things and I'm afraid they were hidden in the garbage. Smile

I'm worried about losing things in our paper recycling, too!

Oh, I laughed so hard reading this Smile, Kyle is the same way except his hiding place of choice is either the hamper or trash can. Hamper is actually kind of fun, doing laundry is always a treasure hunt but trash, I actually lost half a pair of MY shoes before we figured it out Shocked . Something that has helped (to a small extent) is we gave him a job and taught him how to throw his own diapers away. He gets applauded for it and gets his need to throw things away out in a non destructive way (funny side note, we have to actually say "go PUT this in the trash can" while signing go and trash, if we say "go THROW this away" he actually throws it across the room LOL!!!) I don't even know if you could somehow translate that into your specific situation but wanted to share something that helped us. GOOD LUCK!!!

From a recent Facebook post. Inside the subwoofer in the Family Room:

With Emma, I don't think it's so much hiding as it is just a curiosity about . . . stuff. About all we do is to do our best to keep the valuable/meaningful stuff out of reach. I'm pretty sure we've lost a bunch of things. She hasn't put things (other than trash itself) into the trashcan in a while. Although we really try and avoid buying her toys/games/etc. with lots of and/or small pieces, it seems to show up here, anyway.
We've also more or less gotten into the habit of picking up all the kid junk as/after she goes to bed. Besides leaving the living area more adult-looking for the evening, and less depressing when one gets up in the morning, one is less apt to step on it in the middle of the night. . .
So, no answers, just strategies. LOL

When my old recliner chair broke we took it outside and all sorts of things fell out of it. Talitha had been hiding stuff inside the workings of it for ages. We have a child locater tab on our remote because she hides that - often in a small container or play handbag in her toy box so it is an epic effort to find it without the telltale beeping.

She loves to put things in small spaces, including herself if she can fit. She now has two drawers which are hers to stash stuff in and the squirrelling has reduced. We still have to think outside the box if something goes missing. I have found my keys in the garbage bin more than once. Now she knows what the keys are for she doesn't throw them away fortunately.

Ha-ha Kallen does that as well. Except, he is a teaser and just loves to hide his brothers' cellphones and the milk lids. I took some time to realize that a lid I was sure I just had, didn't disappear but little mister took it and hid it. Luckily for us, Kallen know where he put stuff (better than me) and will show us where he put it.

Unfortunately he sometimes just put stuff in his school bag and it can be a great discovery to find those things. One time I let him play with an old hand bag. I was jumping on the trampoline outside and left it there. Luckily I picked it up to take it inside and was VERY surprised to find our car keys (not yet missing) in there. another time he had me cellphone and his dad's wallet in a net book case he took to ST

One morning, Melissa decided to pack her purse before going to speech therapy. She accidentally spilled some of the contents in the car when she got in. I looked on the floor of the car and found a lot of the usual stuff she packs in her purse, such as the remote control, her tea cups, play baby bottles. The one item that surprised me was a small box of frozen spinach. LOL!!!

Love the photo of the woofer!!!!

Another one of Melissa's storage places is inside the Grand-father clock. That one took awhile for me to figure out. I looked in there by chance and discovered all sorts of items.

She also likes to toss stuff behind the washer and dryer and behind the television. Our family room couch also rattles when we lift it up to find things that slid under it. I can hear the silver wear clanging around in it. I just haven't bothered to cut open the bottom of the couch to retrieve everything in there. Smile

LOL! We first look in the vents to find missing items at our house! We moved our kitchen garbage to under the kitchen sink with a child lock. That helped some. Also, knowing where he can put things away like the other posts suggested! Good luck!

Lol. Sean did the floor vents too. He eventually stopped. Now he turfs stuff in the garbage. I found my blackberry playbook in the bottom once. Just happened to be changing the garbage bag and noticed something my daughter had put in there and was digging for that and discovered the playbook. I cringe at how we probably would have torn the house apart looking for it. He also likes to put his bowls in the garbage when he is done. Lol
