Ok, I checked the bottle of Russell's LOL It says .25mgs(I do believe) SO, he takes that at night and about .13 in the AM.
In the beginning he was taking the .25 pill in the AM and PM and that was not working...it was too much.. then we did half a pill AM and PM.. and now we just altered it again about a month or so ago.

I know Dr. Capone said to start Kayla on .25. Does it only come in pill form? I can't imagine trying to get Kayla to take a pill!

it is one of the two my doctor has suggested we try with Devon if we have not seen a major improvement in his aggression by December (it is unannounced and unprovoked and usually you can not tell when it is coming)
We are just waiting (the formaility of the testing) for the dual diagnosis. But all involved state it is just a formality and we all know that it is there.
There has been a marked decrease in the behavior since we are a lot more sonsisten t than previous family..... but it is not extinquished.
All the side effect of all of them scare me...... but seeing the difference of Miranda on topamax and not on it..... has made me feel better about this probable choice..... and we could always do with some weight gain..... we are now just under weight now..... no longer emaciated / anorexic!
PS......he has made remarkable progress..... but each step foward brings us a newer problem with communication and frustration and another aggression and we are making some plans before the baby gets here
(HOWEVER we can not start anything till we finalize..... not allowed to give these types while in care)

Risperdal is a miracle drug! We have had no side effects and Mikey is like a completely different child on it. He is able to control himself and enjoy his life soooo much more with Risperdal.

WOW TOM REALLY??? Yes, the tiny mustard pill
Jane, other then a bit of weight gain (but nothing TOO astronomical) and a few anicdotal things only for Russell that we noticed we really didn't see any side effects. I think you should at least give it a shot!

ditto to what Tom has said about Risperdal. Matty has had such minimal agression, no drop-n-flop. tantrums are less severe. Seems like when he does act up, it's "typical" 6 yr old stuff. Before risperdal, I would get stressed just opening up his bedroom door in the morning, thinking what will happen today. He still may act up for a little while early morning before his med, but by mid morning, he can be quite enjoyable to be with. Matty has done a 180 degree turn. He is on o.25ml, we have an oral solution. This med has helped us and Matty to find a balance.

Risperdal question: Matty does fine taking risperdal in the morning, no issues, no bad attitude, etc. Last Psych appt, he suggested we try giving Matty the same dose at 5p, sicne than can be a time when trouble begins for the evening. We began giving Matt the additional dose, and he has been so emotional, crying for as long as 20 mins over anything that he may ask about, snack, reading, bathroom, everything. Just Mattys mental issues, mood swings? Usually he'll start to laugh if I try to redirect him, but than once he's redirected to the next thing, he cries, sometimes to the point where he'll gag, and dry heave. Additional dose of risperdal, or Matty? I may send the Psych an E mail, or call him.

Katie, what dose did he add in the evening? It could be too much, or it could be that it's making him tired enough that he'd really rather just go to bed than deal with the world. What if you added it a little later, like about 1/2 hr before he goes to bed? Risperdal doesn't leave the system fast like Ritalin does (which is why when you stop/start the drug you need to do so SLOWLY) so it's more a matter of having a certain level in the system, not so much as what time of day it's there. (hope that makes sense.)

When Mikey is tired he is a horror - hitting, fighting, ignoring our correcting him. And we find that sometimes the Risperdal tires him out and causes the behaviors it is supposed to be stopping. Try giving him the end of day dose closer to bedtime.

Thanks Leah and Tom,
I left a message for the Psych, abdout lowering Mattys afternoon dose of risperdal, to 0.17ml from 0.25, he said that's fine. Seems since we started giving him the afternoon dose, he cries alot until he goes to bed, he is becoming completly obcessed with food. He is constantly hungry. Does risperdal have effect on the wiring of the brain to stomach, sending mixed signals of being hungry? We have to tell him to stop and will remove him from the table, I think he would eat so much if we let him, he would throw up. He will try to shovel food as he's being moved, and than will cry over it. It's not like he only has a few bites, 2 helpings with a cleared plate sometimes. Perhaps glucose out of whack? He has alos began to rock after starting the late afternoon dose if risperdal. He can go pretty fast too, anywhere, a rocker, coaches, the floor rocking back against the cabinets, a file cabinet, etc. "Matty, what are you doing?" He'll yell, "nothing" and continue rocking, Maybe that's sensory related, or coincidental it began after afternoon risperdal?
Leah: did Angela gain weight, and want to eat alot on risperdal?

I think I've said probably 50 times somewhere on the site, the number one reason people STOP using Risperdal is because of the increased appetite. They are RAVENOUS!!! And, telling them not to eat is like telling a starving orphan not to eat. They HAVE to. The are HUNGRY.
Angela started the Risperdal 2 or 3 days before we went to the Atlanta conference. My witness Ann was with us as well. Angela ate more than Ann and I PUT TOGETHER! I had bought brand new clothes just for Angela to wear on the trip, and they were too tight by the time we came home! In three months, Angela gained 23 pounds! She has stretch marks everywhere.
The dramatic appetite does taper off after awhile, but this drug should NOT be used with children who are already on the heavy side to begin with. Angela's weight gain was so dramatic that three of her doctors were discussing among themselves weather she should be taken off of it. However, the benefit of the drug to Angela was so great that it was decided to keep her on and see what happens.
Now, Angela has what I call a very good appetite, but it's not overboard like it was. She's 12, and very active (she swims almost every day.) and I would say she eats about the same amount as Dean and I do. Because she's willing to eat pretty much anything (the only things she doesn't like are eggs, or spicy things.) it's easy for me to give her fresh veggies and stuff like that as fillers instead of unhealthy stuff.
So, the appetite DOES taper off, but it takes awhile. You have to let him eat, so make sure you're making healthy, low-calorie stuff available to him. (a mistake I made with Angela in the beginning.) You'll see a rapid weight gain, but watch it very closely. You may end up in the position of deciding if the benefit outweight the side effects.
