Hi all!

My friend Paula referred me to this wonderful site. My name is Erin and I am a SAHM to my DD Josie May. My husband and I are in the (very long, tedious, and exhausting) process of trying to adopt. We are currently trying to adopt a little boy with DS.

I have been on the phone countless times and sent too many emails to remember trying to find out about insurance, medicaid, SSI, etc. I even called my senator directly today. (Her office was Wonderful Laughing )

However, the problem we're running into is that we can't find out in advance if the baby can get medicaid. I have been in tears for a good part of the day with every door closed.
Also, our insurance has already 'assured' us that the baby would be denied because he is over 32 days old. Which means we can't even consider adoption without medicaid coverage.

If you're still reading, thanks for sticking with me and I look forward to getting to know you. Very Happy

there are a lot of details that make a defference on this.

but for starters he can not be denied at all due to placement after 32 days. (unless IN has some law that I have never seen) but his placement date is considered time of birth and by federal law you have 3o days to add him.

He will be eligible for medicaid if he meets the criteria for title ive adoption subsidy! A federal program not based on income. Most children born and adopted through agency placemnet (key is agency not private) with ds are eligible but......................... there are a lot of buts........... it depends on what state you are in (IN...hates to do this or so I was told) and what state he is coming from.

BUT AS OF 2002 it is the receiving state that must do the subusdy work!

He can get SSI till finalization (and needs it for subsidy application) which would usually come with medicaid and hopefull that process has been started since he is older, because he is his own entity til finalization!!! (not the day you bring him home). The application needs to be done quickly though.... they now only pay back bills 90 days (if he is in a hospital now.... they (hospital sw) may have done this already to get payment)

But your agency usually needs to do this paperwork and they are usually speedier for agencies and DFS children than the rest of us!

Having been in that situation it is no fun.

And by federal law you do have to add him to you policy if he can be added with no extra charge to you if he receives subsidy.

Since you are a pastors wife and I assume your income is low.... it may be possible for him to keep ssi after finalization if no subsidy..... but all that is income based.

He might also qualify for your state CHIP program..... but he has to be with you to know for sure.... nit reallly the nice awaking to american health care you were looking for

good luck!

Jane

I thought an adopted child could be added to an insurance policy immediately, because it is a life changing status (i.e. the same as marriage, birth, etc)? My husband works in HR and he said that the 32 day rule applies to newborn babies (i.e. you have to enroll them by the time they are 32 days old), but an adopted child can be added any time. I would double check and double check again. Smile

Congrats on your journey, BTW! Does this baby happen to be the little Chinese baby who is with his parents currently? Smile

Sorry I haven't posted sooner, we've been consumed with adoption stuff Smile

About the insurance...
We have private insurance so yes, they can deny the baby.
However, that's okay because we have it confirmed that the baby WILL qualify for medicaid in IN, as well as a subsidy from the state he was born in.

Lilpayton,
How did you know???!!!

The birthparents will probably make a decision by early next week. (For those of you who have adopted I'm sure you understand that everything is 'next week' Smile)

RebeccaP,
I'll be emailing you!

Sarahmsam,
I'm in Valpo so it's nice to 'see' someone close to home. I grew up in Lowell.

Thank you everyone for your support and advice and answers!
I love this site!
