Risperdal FYI, and an update

Angela has blood work done every 6 months, but to be honest, I loose track of what's what, and what's do when. A couple weeks ago we went to see the Developmental Ped. who said she was behind on a couple things. Thyroid for one. The other was that if they're on Risperdal they should have their fasting lipids, blood glucose and/or A1c done. Something to keep in mind, those of you who are using it.

As for us, I'm in the process of weaning Angela off her Risperdal. We've upped her guanfacine, (aka Tenex) which is going quite nicely, and have dropped one dose of the Risperdal. She is just gaining too much weight! So far, the adjustments are going really well, plus we have a really good behavior team in place helping us work through some stuff, and the combination is making a HUGE difference!

Glad to hear the new med adjustments are working out for Angela. Beside the levels you had mentioned to be checked while on risperdal. Mattys Psych also orders an EKG every few monthes, which the Dr feels has not much in common with Matts cardiac history, risperdal related.

Mikey is on Risperdal and has lost weight!!! The doctor wants to see his blood tests and then we are talking about trying the Tenex. Mikey was at his best in the doctor's office yesterday (throwing things, knocking things over, etc) so the doc is definitely willing to try something else. Wink

We are meeting with the school district at the end of the month to talk about an intensive in-home ABA program. I'll keep you informed how that goes.

Good to know. I was just emailing Nick's doc to schedule our follow-up med checks. Maybe I will get it done in March when he has other annual blood work done. They did have an initial blood screening and EKG done before starting Risperdal but they haven't mentioned follow up yet. How often are your docs saying?

Also, Nick tried Tenex. It was OK, he was VERY tired but acting better. Although the effects were not consistent at all. He could have 3 GREAT days and then 4 BAD days. The tiredness and the inconsistency led us to try something else...Risperdal.

Yeah, the drowsiness on Tenex takes about a month to wear off. At least that's how long it took for Angela. We recently upped her Tenex dose a SMALL amount, and she basically slept for 4 days, then was fine. GREAT difference in behavior though!

Matty tried Tenex, became more aggresive than the norm. Mattys weight while on risperdal has balanced, he is no longer the ravenous boy of a few weeks sgo.

I have to think that Nick's weight leveled off now too. He is a little peanut so a little weight was good for him. He gained about 5 pounds and that has been it. Did you guys have a lot of adjustments when you first started Risperdal? After the 5 pounds we had to increase which took another month before it kicked in but we haven't gotten back to wonderful behavior we saw when he started it.
