Hi everyone,
This is my first post to this website even though I have been watching it for months. We had a prenatal dx with our son. We now have 3 beautiful children, the last of which has DS. He is 10 months old ( born on New Years Eve) and doing wonderful. I was reading something today and started getting concerned that my son might also have autism Has any other parent had trouble with their child having midline control and his speech is delayed? Brady, my son, is unable to clap, at this time. Is he too young? I am not sure if I am making to bigger of a deal out of this or not. But of course your mind goes to the worse scenario. Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks,
Alicia

((((hugs)))) Don't stress yourself out looking things up. I'm no expert on Autism so I cant give you any answers but I'm sure that your care providers would've spotted the signs by now if he has it. You should speak to your doctor if you have any queries.
P.s welcome to the group Hope you post more often now that you've taken the first step!

I know that my four with out autism were not able to clap at 10 months either!! Colin was 13 months......christmas eve 2001! And Miranda was almost two before she could really do it on purpose!
None of mine had any laguage skills except for a little babling at 10 months. My typical premie is about the same age.....just started babbling (but he has other issues........)
So please do not panic just yet...... I am not negating you worries.....it is just all of my kiddos have done very well in one area and then fallen off in another...... like crawling but not talking......then when they started babling....we made a ton of progress there and no motor progress.......
Welcome!

Hi Alicia
So welcome to this board! I always check and see if we have newly registered members, and I was wondering when you're going to introduce yourself.
I have no experience with Autism, but you're son sounds quite typical fo r a kid with ds at that age.
To give you an idea- Kallen could only sit after he turned one. I can't remember when he clapped and well, speech is something you really have to have patience with! A lot! It is very different than with typical kids.
Does he make eye contact and react to you?
Will you please tell more about the rest of your family and where you're from.
If you want to post pictures, there is an explanation on how to do that on the first post under "photos"
Again WELCOME and looking forward to get to know you better.

Welcome to the boards. I'm not going to be any help, but my son Austin is 14 months and he doesn't clap. His PT and ST both agree that Austin is at a 10 month old and haven't said they were worried. I would worry to much about it. Again welcome and can't wait to hear more about your family.

Welcome to the board! I think it's too early to be worrying about that yet. Ali is a year old and she doesn't clap yet. She has taken a long time to develop the midline skills.

Not clapping at 10 months is not a sign that he has autism. Many DS professionals will not diagnose a child with DS with the added diagnosis of autism until they are 5 years old (at least, that is the case in UK). 10 months is way too young. Even in a typical child, a paediatrician would not be looking into autism until the child is at least 15-18mths.
Yes, by all means keep an eye on your little man. And if there are any 'strange' behaviours that he has that confuse or concern you, make a note of them. Please, just enjoy your son, and he will do things, in his own time, including clapping!
Hope that helps, x

Hi There - no help here I'm sorry , but I'd just like to welcome you and say I'm looking forward to hearing more about you and your family!
Incidentally I don't even know what a midline skill is! Anyone enlighten me?! Something to do with things that meet in the middle?! (Sorry don't mean to hijack!)

Paige was just over 10 months old when she clapped, and I'm pretty sure that even "typical" development isn't much earlier. Paige actually liked to grab my hands and make the clap for a long time before she did it herself!

Is your child sitting yet. I believe they need good trunk control before they can clap. It still may be neurologically and developmentally too young for your child.
Autism has always been a concern for me because my child has eating issues and liked to dangle and shake a burp cloth at around 10 months of age and then he stopped eating at 2 1/2 years old. Well he doesn't have autism but still likes strings and ties and still is not eating. However he isn't obsessive with the behaviour. I believe it is more sensory integration for him.
Here is a great issue from Disability Solutions. I am thankful that they keep these issues archived and make them available to us since they are no longer publishing.

Hi !
My son was born on Dec 29th, so our boys are almost twins
Alex is just 11 months now and isn't clapping yet either; he does bang toys together, but never just claps his hands.
At our last appointment with the geneticist (when Alex was 8 months), she looked for signs of autism which were mainly based on social interaction: smiling, eye contact, following people around the room, that kind of thing.
As for speech, Alex babbles things like 'bababa', 'dada', 'eda' (which we have convinced ourselves is him trying to say Edward, his brother's name - haha!), occasionally, 'mamama' if he's really mad and he blows lots of razzes.
Try not to worry, but if you are concerned, as others have said, check things out with your health professional.
Keep posting!
