Knee popping

Have a question about knee popping. I know that our kiddos have loose joints and so on, but is it bad for them to pop their joints on purpose?

Austin has started popping his left knee. He's not doing it because he's upset about anything like that and to be honest I think he likes it. He'll sit there and pop it and laugh. We can hear it pop and we can see his knee popping in and out.

How can we get him to stop doing it?

Should I talk with his doc or PT about it?

Is this bad?

Thanks for any help.

My Austin grew out of this. But it scared me to death the first time he did it!
I know you'll hear different advice about this, but Austin started walking at about 18 months. And we used an exersaucer for him and a Johnny Jump up. If we hadn't, I don't think he would have strengthened his knees enough to walk as soon as he did.

Hopefully your Austin will outgrow this as well!

That was happening a lot to Quinn too. It would gross me out big time how it would pop and you could feel it. It happened all the time. My husband asked the doctor about it and they said she should grow out of it. It isn't happening as much anymore.

I have a post somewhere about Aden doing this to, and like Austin Aden loved doing it. Freaks me out.
He does it a lot less now I‘d would keep telling him no and something have to hold his legs to stop him.
Hope your Austin cuts it out soon.

Kayla does this when she gets upset. Drives her PT nuts because it's so loud. Her PT wants her to see an orthopedist about it, but from what I've heard it's not a big deal, they do it because they can.

I suppose in the short term it should not be such a big deal. but long term would make me a bit nervous. Hannah had a different but similar problem with hip popping.Hers was not a behaviour, but her hip would partially dislocate for years -from about age four on.Now at 11 she had to have MAJOR hip reconstruction, because the socket was deteriorated from bone rubbing bone when it "popped". If it continues long term you may want to seek an ortho opinion.

Braeden went through a stage of doing this and it did gross me out!! The sound is terrible!! I took him to a ped. ortho and he checked him out and said "do you want me to tell you why he's doing this?" and I of course said yes and he said "because he can". He said it was not hurting him, and compared it to someone that can pop their shoulder, finger, etc. out because their double jointed. Wish I would have listened to my Dad who said the same thing, could have saved some money!!
