Has anyone's kids tried a run bike? How old were they when they were able to use it? My MIL bought one for DS#2 for christmas (age 3).

Axel has one but he's scared to death of it. (well, he's scared to have his feet 2 inches off the ground!) He's also a post institutional child and never learned about ride-on toys, etc. But a few weeks ago we loaned it to my friend's sone who is 9 with DS. In a matter of 3-4 days he was riding a pedal bike!
If think if your child's gross motor skills are at 3 years or above he should be fine.

Leaspring...I don't think his motor skills are comparable to three years or above and i think it is a bit early for him. He has been walking a year and working on walking up/down stairs on his own right now. I would say he is probably at 18 mos level and he doesn't seem to really love ride em toys either. It's just we see some 1 year old typical kids on these run bikes! My older son is 5 and still hasn't lost the training wheels on his bike...I think next spring/summer we will get out biking more and we will see where he is at. I think my 5 year old will be using the run bike if he can squeeze into it. And next year the twins might be able to use it if liam is still working on it. We've got 4 kids so someone will use it!

Is this the bikes without pedals? if it is then, yes we have one!
We only got it a couple of months ago and both my kids have been on it (Callum 8 with DS and Kieran 7). Callum rides a trike well and Kieran can ride a 2 wheeler with stabilisers (training wheels) but neither of them are confident on a typical 2 wheeler. It's gone cold and wet here so not much chance for bike riding, but I'm hoping that next spring/summer they'll both get lots of use from it.
It wont hurt to give it to him, let him try and see what happens!

Thanks for posting this. I've never seen or heard of these, but they look very cool and like a great transition between stroller and regular bike for neighborhood walks. This website (http://runbikes.com/) has a bunch of them, but it's hard to tell what size we'd need by looking online. Are there many stores that carry them?

I have to have one of these! I'd love Robert to start to learn to ride a bike!
Could you keep us posted and let us know how the christmas pressie goes down!
Post some pictures of him on it, if you can!
I've seen kids of those bikes here and wondered if they'd work with our kids. Well worth a try!

For a cheaper version of these bikes.....buy a regular bike and remove the pedals, then when ready replace the pedals.
You can then even keep the trainer wheels on but raise them up slightly so they offer a little but not complete support.
Keep meaning to do this for Teah but have still not got round to it!!!

Well, you can't just remove the pedals. You have to remove the chain, and the whole bar that is the pedals. Otherwise they will be in the way when they're trying to scoot the bike.

We got our dd a Stryder bike like in this blog post last year:
http://downsyndromeupupupandaway.blogspot.com/2011/11/balance-bikes.html
I write that post in November, & we really weren't using it a lot, but lately, dd has been using it for a shirt time each day. She still has quite a ways to go, but I've seen quite a bit if improvement in the last month.
I really think these bikes are great. Dd learned to use a trike to learn peddling & I'm thinking this will teach her balance. Hopefully, she can put everything together & figure out how to ride a bike.

That's what my friendly, neighbourhood bike shop is for.
Even if it costs me a bit for them to do it, it will still be less than buying a balance bike for an 11yr old, and the bike can be put back together when Teah is ready to move on to pedals. xx

We have a balance bike. My three year old is amazing on it! He glides and goes over rough terrain on it. It is so fun to watch. Charlie tries it a little here and there, but is not very confident on it yet. He prefers the trike because he can go fast on it. I hope he warms up to the balance bike, though. It is such a great tool for learning to ride a bike.
