My name is Angela and I have a 6 month old little boy with DS. When I was pregnant the doctor told us that there was a 1 in 900 chance of us having a baby with DS. Ethan is my 1 in 900 miracle and we love him so much.
I have recently seen a genetic specialist and she told us our chances of having another baby with DS increases now to 1 in 100. She said thats not a very big risk but I think about Ethan being a 1 in 900 chance and that wasn't a big risk either but it still happened.
Anyway the point of this thread is to see whether anyone on here has had more than one child with DS.

I have 6 kids, only one with DS. Your chance goes up by your age and if it's a genetic form. My dr says I have the same risk as everyone else my age having children (29), and also that if I were to have another with DS that I should buy a lottery ticket, because the chances of being that 1 in 1500 or more AGAIN...well I guess the risk is a bit higher now because I was 24 when I had him. You get my point though.

My doctors (genetic doc as well as my obgyn) told us that once you have a child with Ds, you're always at about 1 in 100 until you reach 35 and it starts to get lower and lower from there. I'm 43 and I believe it's 1 in 20 for me now. So from what I understood from our docs...if you were 20 at the time of your child with Ds birth, your chances will always be 1 in 100 until you reach 35 and it gets lower from there.
Statistics are just numbers....not sure how they even come up with them anyway. I had a level 2 u/s and passed it. My odds were 1 in 900 and Danny sports an extra #21. Moms in their 20's are 1 in several thousands chances. Stats aren't worth the paper they are printed on IMHO.

They say the risk is 1:100, but that doesn't mean it is. If you took 100 25 year olds who have kids with T21, I don't think you would find one with 2. They also say the abortion rate is 90%, but they don't actually know because no one keeps track....this is just what "they say" based on the number of children they figure SHOULD have down syndrome. If you were to take 100 women over 40 who have a child with down syndrome, there would probably be several with more than one. With T21 from what I've read, it's either a faulty egg or sperm, or a freak occurance with the dividing of the cells at conception. I did a lot of research after I had Noah. I had to know how this happened to my son. Since they can't determine which of the 3 caused it, they say everyone's chances is 1:100. The thought is that if it's faulty sperm...there will be more of them, if it's a faulty egg...again there will be more of them. If it's just a freak occurance at the time of conception, well, then your risk is no higher than if you never had a child with down syndrome to begin with. My dr said the likelyhood of it being either faulty egg or sperm are so unlikely, that my risk is no higher than it was before.

Its been a while since I've checked this thread.
My husband and I are at the stage where we are thinking about trying for another baby. Ethan is nearly 15 months now. We have spoken about whether we would have an amnio to find out early if our next baby will have DS too and we decided that we wouldn't do it because of the risk of miscarriage. We still worry about having another child with DS. Its not that we would ever have an abortion even if we did find out but having two children with special needs would be a real test. I guess we will just have to take the risk because we really want to give Ethan a brother or a sister.

I have three with DS. Granted, I didn't have them all as infants and toddlers, but really the three kids I have are pretty easy kids.
There are three other moms who used to post here who went on to have a second child with DS. It does happen but it's very rare. The only reason I know of these three moms is because they posted HERE where parents of kids with DS congregate. Most of the doctors I know who specialize in treating people who have DS say they've never seen biological siblings with DS. I think there are far more cases of identical twins with DS than there are sibs from different pregnancies.
I buy lottery tickets now. I have two kids with DS and AAI both born in a country on the other side of the word. I'd love to have a statistician tell me the odds of THAT!

Not quite sure the point Leah is making but just wanted to say I have an identical twin sister who has two boys.
Neither of them have DS, but, there is always a but in this, my younger sister of 11 month also has a daughter with DS.
She was 2.5 years old when Robert arrived sporting an extra chromsome!
Both kids have standard T21, non genetic link.
Yea I sure believe lightening can strick twice!
Dont mean to scare you....just wanted to share my sibling family experiences with DS......Good luck with you decision!
BTW.....I asked to be checked for DS and was told all was well. I didn't have an amnio for fear of miscarriage!

What I meant was, I know many families who have identical twins who have DS. I only know a few families who have non-twin siblings with DS.

I felt the same fear. Human beings aren't good at feeling the statistics. I was terrified w/ #2 that he'd have DS like #1.
As you say, it happened. That's true. 1 in 100 (less than that I think) is not a big risk. That's also true.
So for next time, two things are true. It might happen (< 1%). It probably won't (99%+), but it might.
I don't know what you should do. I would have felt guilty had #2 had DS, but it would have been misplaced guilt! Thank God he's got an even # of chromosomes. And he drives us to distraction in a way #1 never did. DS or not, they've got their own personalities!

I haven't been on for a while but thought I'd check on here.
Well my gorgeous baby boy Ethan will be 2 in a couple of weeks. It still makes me sad sometimes thinking about him having DS but he is such a joy and he has brought so much love into our lives. I couldn't imagine life without his smiling face.
We have started sharing the exciting news that Ethan is going to be a big brother in November. We are very excited. We had the DS scan done and the doctor was very happy with the new baby. She gave us a risk factor of 1 in 3000 so that has put our minds at ease. I know that theres always a slight chance but we are hopeful that the new baby will not have DS. Ethan is going to be a great big brother. I just hope he starts walking before its born!!
